Clark wasn't surprised when Autumn told him that he made her nervous. He -was- surprised, however, at how calm she was about it. He laughed when she stated that the reason wasn't that he hadn't seen her naked. He never expected her to really respond to that statement. "Well then why do you think it is?" He asked. That was the true question. He knew she wasn't afraid of him, so what was it? "I know. You have a crush on me, right?" His teasing was light hearted, but there was a hint of true question in there as well.

Clark sighed and shook his head as Autumn continued to insist that she was to blame. "Did you accept his offer because you were weak, or because you were deceived?" He asked. "I'm not sure if I believe in fate or not. But I do think everything happens for a reason. If you hadn't said yes to him, we wouldn't be out here talking right now either. So don't worry about it."

It was clear that his story was holding her attention. He noticed every time she wanted to ask a question, but decided against it. Every time he held herself back from commenting on a particular part. But most of all, he noticed her hand gesture when she told him not to hold back. On the outside he had only a gentle smile, but on the inside, he found it hilarious! Both of them wanted so badly to be closer to the other, and both were trying their hardest not to get any closer! It was laughable!

Clark decided then to be the one to put an end to the little dance they were doing. Maybe it was because He saw what was going on with both of them, or maybe it was because the late hour was having it's effect on him. He wasn't sure, but he knew that he wanted to stop it. He turned to his side, leaning against the arm of the couch, and sliding his right leg behind Autumn. "Come here." He said, gesturing with his finger for her to slide toward him, so that she could lean back and use him for support.

Once they were repositioned, he proceeded to answer her question. "Well for starters, my normal character doesn't open up to people. No one knows his story, and he doesn't have a problem with that." His hand instictively found it's way into her hair as he spoke. "He doesn't trust people, even the people he does business with, and that keeps him alive." He sighed as he thought about his antisocial habits. Now that he thought about it, he lived a pretty lonely life. "What about you? What's your 'normal character' like?"

Nervous?

A soft smile tilted her lips upwards, a warm light entering her eyes. Any other time Autumn would be completely embarrassed by that question and frantically deny it to save the last fragmented bits of her self-esteem; but for some odd reason she didn’t feel flustered at all. She was at complete ease, relaxed into the lounge chair with the large sweater she wore pulled over her legs to retain as much warmth as possible in the cool night; a reminder that the seasons were changing. Soon snow would fall and coat the ground in a fluffy white blanket. Winter was a season Autumn always looked forward too. Everything looked beautiful, the cold gave her a reason to wear her comfy sweaters and cute scarves. But back to his question: does he make her nervous?

“You do make me nervous… But I don’t think it’s because you haven’t seen me naked.” She said, adding the last part after a second of thought. In truth, she’d be even more embarrassed had their roles been reversed - had he seen her naked instead. The biggest difference between the two was that he was confident with himself, and Autumn always had that seed of doubt planted and growing in the back of her mind, most likely a result from the childhood bullies that always made fun of her.

Blame.

The touch to her knee caught her by surprise. Autumn drew in a sharp breath, caught off guard by the sudden contact between the two. His hand was cold from being outside too long and his skin was rough from all the fights; it was masculine, intimidating. From that one touch she could tell just how much power he had - especially over her.

“Maybe, but had I declined his offer - had I been stronger - we wouldn’t be in this situation: I wouldn’t be feeling bad for getting you kicked out of Blackjack’s place and you wouldn’t be out of a job.” He didn’t have to tell her, but she knew he wouldn’t be able to maintain a comfortable lifestyle living off the pay he earned from Sally’s alone. The money he got from fighting was paying his bills and putting food on the table, there was no way around that. And Blackjack threatened to kill him; how could she possibly ignore that? The blame was on her.

Blaze.

After making inside she dropped his hand, her own grabbing a fistful of the fabric of her shorts in anticipation as she padded over to the couch after him. Once he was settled down she took the spot next to him, pulling her legs up and sitting criss-cross with her knees skimming against the fabric of his sweatpants, facing him with brown eyes twinkle with curiosity. It was always interesting to learn about others; figure out what made them tick or what fabricated the composition of their being. Clark was no exception to that rule; in fact her curiosity was increased ten-fold. She wanted to get to know him.

The story shed light on so many things but it also ignited even more curiosity. Questions flooded her head, some sneaking their way up to her throat but died on her tongue before they could get out - no sense in bombarding him. She didn’t want to scare him off, but it was hard to contain herself when she found him so fascinating. Like a moth to flame she was gravitating towards him, but it was only a matter of time before she got burned by his blazing fires.

A shake of her head dismissed the question, tight brown curls bouncing playfully on her head. “Don’t apologize for speaking your mind. If you want to talk about it, then talk about it. Tell your story, don’t hold back any details because it’s those small, miniscule moments that make you, you.” Autumn offered him a warm smile, right hand unconsciously stretching out towards him as if to cup his cheek much like a mother would do to encourage a child. She caught herself just as her soft fingertips touched the scratchy stubble on his jaw, hand immediately retracting back to her. The intimate action was dismissed as a question flowed through her lips in an attempt to cover it up. “You say you’re acting out of character; how would you describe your normal character then?” Even more interesting was the fact that he was acting ‘out of character’ with her, a detail that wasn’t overlooked by the attentive woman. What about her lowered his security? What about her made him save her from her date-from-hell? What about her coerced him to stay when he could’ve easily left during her time in the shower?

But most importantly, the question she found herself thinking about far more than the others: What about him sparked so much interest and compassion? At first she thought him  barbaric and aggressive; when did that view change? What pivotal moment made her view him as a friend rather than a nuisance?

Clark had lost track of time in his reflection. He had gotten so lost in his thoughts that he had completely forgotten the cold of this late Winter's night. It had to be nearly 3 in the morning by now... But he sat comfortably, thinking of her... Her and the impact that she had had on his life in one short day. Amazing how little relevance time really had.

Normally Clark's muscles would have tightened when Autumn's hand touched him from behind. His fists would have tightened and he would have went on the offensive. His guard was always up, and for someone to break through them automatically put him in survival mode. But two things prevented that from happening. The first was that he heard her footsteps coming from her room, however light they may have been as they lead up to the patio door opening.

The second was much scarier. Clark didn't know how it happened, but he had grown comfortable around Autumn. He felt safe around her, like he could let down his guard around her and be alright.... and he HATED that! You don't let your guard down around anyone! That was rule number one of survival... And yet, here he was, perfectly calm when the woman walked up behind him and placed her hand on his shoulder. He turned his head to look at her hand just as she retracted it. It was warm; A reminder that he had been out in the cold for quite some time. They would have to go in soon.

When she quickly pulled her hand away, bringing it to her body for security, an odd smile came to the man's face. "Do I make you nervous?" He asked. It was clear that, though her comfort level with him had risen, it hadn't as quickly as his had. Something else bothersome. "Maybe that's because I haven't seen you naked." He said with a laugh as he looked out onto the city.

It came to great surprise when she apologized to him. But at the same time, it explained a lot. She felt like she was the cause of the troubles that would soon fall upon him; That he was going to struggle because she had allowed herself to fall into that situation. He  shook his head, and looked over to the woman, placing his hand on her knee. "No. It's not your fault." He said calmly. "If anything, blame that sorry excuse for a date of yours..." He didnt' see it that way. In his eyes, he was starting a new chapter of his life, and right there on the first page, was Autumn.

And then came the question. The question he knew would come sooner or later. "I'll tell you..."He smiled, and stood to his feet, the hand that rested on her knee extended toward her, requesting her hand. "But let's go inside first. It's freezing out here!" He took her hand and guided her into the apartment before him, closing the door behind him once he was safely inside. He then took a seat on the couch, leaving plenty of room for her to join him if she so chose.

He was quiet for a moment, thinking of how to explain it. He had never really opened up to anyone before, so this was a new experience for him. Once he had an idea of what he wanted to say in his mind, he finally started. "I was in a foster home for most of those awkward teen years... I wasn't the most agreeable kid, plus I was too old. There was no way anyone was going to adopt me.  When I was 16, I started sneaking out at night. Just, looking for something different. One night I was out and there was a ring of people. People were challenging some guy to fights for a cash prize." He paused as he thought back on the night.

"The guy was the big, brawny type. All muscle, no brain. I was always angry, fighting all the time anyway, so I thought I'd give it a shot. He beat me up pretty bad. Way worse than the guy I fought tonight. But I got in one lucky punch... Knocked him flat on his back, and he didn't get back up. I took the money to this weird restaurant where you make your own food to go. Made more food than I knew how to carry, and ended up needing a cab to take it all back to the home for the other kids." He stopped and laughed at the memory. "The food there was garbage."

Clark had to fight the urge to play in Autumn's hair as he spoke. Every once in a while he found his hand gravitating toward her, but he always pulled it back. It wasn't his intention to cross any boundaries. "Anyway, I learned that night that I loved to fight, and I loved to cook. So I took up different Martial Arts. Tai Kwon Do, Kick Boximg, Muay Thai... I asked the head of the home if they could enroll me in cooking classes, but they told me that they couldn't spend that much of the budget on one kid. So I went back to street fighting, and I would take the money that I earned back to that restaurant and make differrent meals to take back to the  Home. I taught myself to make all kinds of dishes. Funny, ten years later, I'm in a mom and pop diner making pancakes and eggs all day..."

He started to realize he was rambling, and tried to get back on target. Something about telling all this to someone felt good. Like a bit of the weight he carried was lifted off his shoulders. "Anyway, a couple years ago, Blackjack found me, told me about his underground circuit. I've played the role of his Champion ever since..." He leaned back against the arm of the couch, looking up at the ceiling. "He's not the only ring leader around here. If I wanted to keep fighting, I'm sure I could find a new home..." He looked at the woman then, realizing just how long he had been talking. "Sorry to talk your head off. Guess I'm really out of character today."

Reflection.

After scrubbing her skin raw and washing her hair, which only took a good ten minutes, Autumn spent the next standing under the steaming water, thinking. Of course, with all that’s happened, she could only think about one thing: Clark. The initial hesitance of showering in the same place he just showered in vanished the second the hot water hit her skin, and after her mind was no longer occupied with scrubbing every last touch from Garrett off her body she was given nothing else to think about but the situation she put Clark in.

He was kicked out of Blackjack’s ring, now he has to support himself with that measly cook’s job at Sally’s. Not to mention the authorities could be after him should Blackjack’s operation be investigated. All of that piled on top of Autumn’s shoulders, weighing them down. In the shower she visibly slumped, realizing that she ruined a lot of things for Clark.

Resolve.

After turning the shower off and drying her body, Autumn slipped into a set of plain underwear, pulling on an oversized sweater and a pair of shorts before exiting her bedroom. As she neared the living room and kitchen her eyes darted around in search of Clark, but he was in neither room. After another quick search she found him out on the balcony.

Autumn slid open the door, nibbling on her bottom lip in hesitance. “Hey..” She began, reaching a hand out to gently touch his shoulder. The second her fingertips came in contact with his hot skin her hand withdrew, resting against her chest. “I’m sorry. I’ve caused a lot of trouble for you..” As the mocha-skinned woman spot she sat down in one of the two lounge chairs on the balcony, keeping her eyes trained intently on Clark’s profile - she’d get nauseous should she look out onto the city.

Building bridges.

“So, how did you get into that scene anyways? How did you become the infamous Blaze?” Brown eyes twinkled with interest as she offered him a small smile, criss-crossing her legs as she looked up to him.

Autumn was bumbling around in the kitchen frantically when Clark came out, desperately drinking ice water, perhaps in an attempt to calm her nerves. Clark didn't blame her. As he had expected, she was even more embarrassed than he was. At least, that was what he assumed to be the case. His plan was to remain silent on the couch and eventually just go to sleep, but no sooner than the moment he sat down, did Autumn call out to him. He looked over at her in the kitchen, a  hint of pink on his face, to see what she wanted. When she asked if he wanted anything to eat, he started to decline her offer. It was too late to eat. It was bad for the metabolism and it would cause strange dreams, not that that part wasn't an almost certainty anyway...

She quickly retracted her offer though, saying that she felt dirty and she wanted to take a shower. She chalked it up to everything that had happened, but Clark couldn't help but feel that it was his fault. "I promise not to go near the bathroom." He joked in an attempt to lighten the mood. Though in the back of his head, he couldn't help but think that it would even the score. She was already halfway down the hall by the time the words escaped his lips though. He felt that she was uncomfortable. His presence made him uncomfortable... He thought maybe he should leave while she was in the shower... No. That wouldn't do. She would have words for him when she came back to the diner... Of course, The next day was Sunday, and he didn't have to work, but he would be back on Monday and she wouldn't be happy with him.

Clark made his way into the kitchen, and like Autumn, prepared himself a glass of Ice water. He gulped the entire glass down, and then poured another. Once he was effectively hydrated, he washed his glass, and put it away. He then headed out to the patio. It was small, but had an amazing view of the city! Being 7 floors up had that kind of effect, he supposed. He reflected on his night while he stood out there. On the look that Autumn gave him when he was in the cage; How it was so different from the look she gave him the night before. What had changed since then? She found out that he was the one who had been making her pancakes all this time... She gave him his first tip since arriving at his job. That was all, right?

He sighed as his reflection continued. He saved her from that punk in the hallway, comforted her until she was capable of moving again... That was the pivotal moment. That was when she decided that she could trust him. But now... She would probably avoid him again. Might even stop coming to the Diner... He didn't know why, but he didn't want that. He didn't know when it happened, but he wanted Autumn around... Man life was suddenly complicated... Not only that, but he had to find a new venue. He couldn't live off the income at the Diner alone. Sure, he had enough saved up to last him a few months, but that time would pass in no time. He would have to hit the streets soon...

Innuendos.

Rather than stay in her bedroom, Autumn went back to the kitchen, sticking with her initial idea of making the two a late night - or early morning - snack. Something light, maybe some fruit? The woman turned to look at the bowl of fruit on the counter. The second her eyes settled on the bananas she turned away with a deep crimson blush. “Okay.. what do we have in the fridge?” Pulling open the door, Autumn scanned the contents for some fruit. Blueberries! “On second thought, no.” No, definitely not blueberries.

Vegetables then. Now on the lookout for veggies, Autumn looked back into the fridge. Carrots and cucumbers! She grabbed the bag of baby carrots and was just about to grab the cucumber before she realized. Oh god, no!

Autumn tossed the vegetables back into the fridge and quickly closed the door. “Let’s go with something… else.” A shaky breath was exhaled; gosh, she was so flustered! She was hungry and flustered - the two didn’t mix well. Now she looked in the freezer. A box of! Popsicles. Yeah, no.

An idea popped into her head; a box of freshly baked donuts from the local bakery. “Yes..” The woman quickly stepped over to another counter, grabbing the box of donuts that lay on the counter, unopened. “Now, which one to have..” A slim finger tapped on her bottom lip as her eyes scanned over the donuts. All of them looked delicious! There were two… long john donuts and two… donuts with holes. All covered in frosting and a little dash of sprinkles, which almost made them seem less inappropriate than they were, but Autumn couldn’t work up the courage to take one out and eat it - her thoughts instantly thinking of…

Okay. You need to stop.

Fingers wound in her hair with a groan of frustration, tugging at the soft strands. It needed to end. In her bedroom she could faintly hear the door open with a gently ‘creak’, signalling Clark’s impending arrival. Something needed to be done, and quick, or she may not be able to control herself anymore. In one last ditch effort to reign her inappropriate thoughts in, Autumn grabbed a glass from the cupboard and filled it up with ice cold water, guzzling half of it down before Clark meandered in and settled himself in the living room. “Hey..” She trailed off, whizzing around to look at him - an act she immediately regretted. “Um.. Do you want anything to eat?” She could think of one thing she’d be glad to have him eat....

“On second thought, I’m feeling.. dirty -- you  know, gross after everything that’s happened, so I’m going to go take a shower. Help yourself to anything in the kitchen.”

Autumn didn’t wait for him to reply before she padded out of the room, headed to the bathroom.

When Clark heard the woman's footsteps approaching, he took a step forward to receive the cloth, but was completely frozen in place when the door opened completely. His muscles tightened out of instinct, as if bracing him for a blow. His lips parted as if to say something, but there were absolutely no words to rectify this situation. What should he do? Turn away? Cover himself with his hands? Well, there was no point now, she had seen everything... He straightened his posture as she realized her mistake. He heard a faint "Oh my God... as she dropped the rag and left the bathroom without another word. "My feelings exactly..." He said quietly once the door was closed. He walked over and piced up the cloth from the floor, before turning back toward the shower

Well that was embarrassing! Not because he had anything to be ashamed of, mind you. It was just awkward. He had pretty much asked for that, first by requesting to take a shower, and second by calling her back to the bathroom without at least wrapping himself in his towel first... He hadn't expected her to come all the way in, but he should have realized there was a possibility... It was a stupid miscalculation.

His embarrassment was washed away when the hot water his his body, soothing the soreness that pained through him. His muscles seemed to instantly relax, and though he could still feel the bruising in his ribs, he was certain that they weren't fractured. It was at that moment that he started to wonder how Autumn felt. She had told him that he had to spend the night at her house, and then walked in on him in the bathroom. That had to have been just as embarrassing. He felt bad for her, but then, at least she got a show out of it! He laughed to himself as he reached out and grabbed his Old Spice body wash out of his bag, and lathered it onto the rag, thoroughly cleaning the sweat and a couple spots of dried blood off his body.

He repeated the process once or twice before turning off the shower and reaching out to grab the towel. When he realized how full of steam the bathroom had gotten he couldn't help but realize that if he had waited longer to call out to Autumn, she might not have seen anything. After drying himself off, he grabbed a pair of boxer briefs, and put them on, following up with the grey sweat pants, and wife beater. He put the dirty clothes into his bag, and draped his jacket over the top. he then folded up the washcloth and towel, and placed them neatly in a corner, unsure what to do with them.

When he walked up to the door, he took a deep breath. Was he ready to face Autumn? Was she ready to face him? He started to wonder if spending the night was a good idea. But he gathered his things and walked out. To his surprise, Autumn wasn't in her room. That meant, he was going to run into her regardless. He slowly made his way into the living room, where he sat on the couch quietly, unsure of what to do or say...

Her back slumped against the wall once she was out of the bathroom, sparkling brown eyes closing as she bit down onto her lip. Even with him in another room she was embarrassed to think of his approaching nudity; a blush lit up her cheeks but she didn’t try to cover it - he wasn’t there to notice it in the first place.

It was weird. Initially she didn’t like him: he was barbaric, fighting in that cage for money, it was primitive and crude. But now she found him quite the character. There was far more to him than punching fists and blazing eyes, a passion and personality under the hard shell he cloaked himself with to remain isolated from the world. Even he didn’t like her when they first met - if their encounter at Sally’s was anything to go by - but now the two were definitely warming up to each other. He wasn’t as stupid and mean as she once thought him to be and she wasn’t as stuck up as he assumed she was. Something between them was growing; the little encounters they had with one another was enough to get a feel for the other - it showed so much to Autumn. Clark was an amazing guy, a detail she could now attest to. Underneath his shell was a soft, passionate guy; but with his shell built so thick with scars and muscles… oh gosh. His muscles were to die for; rippling across his chest. Autumn could distinctly remember the way his muscles tightened when he wrapped his arms around her that time at Blackjack’s to comfort her. He was shirtless then and still sweaty…

Dead puppies and kittens, dead puppies and kittens.

Realizing where her thoughts were going, Autumn quickly changed the subject and straightened up, walking out of her bedroom with her head held high. She was almost to the kitchen, deciding to prepare a small snack for the two, when Clark’s deep voiced boomed through the apartment, instantly catching her attention.

Gosh! She was such a dummy! Long, slim legs carried the petite woman to the laundry room, opening the drying machine and withdrawing a plain black rag before she bounded to her bedroom, flinging open the bathroom door. “I’m so sorry, I forgot they were in the wash. I haven’t had time to… to…”

Brown eyes widened, shocked, and her plump lips parted for a brief second before snapping shut, teeth chewing on that bottom lip once more. He was naked. Naked. And she was looking at him - with no shame. “Oh my god..” She whispered to herself, the rag falling from her hands a second before she turned around and ran out of the room. That image - the image of him would be burned into her mind forever… Though it wasn’t like she had any complaints.

It suddenly felt like she needed a shower. A very cold shower.

It was odd really. As much as Clark strived to be in control of most things in his life, there was something appealing about the way that Autumn laid down the law. There was a certain attractiveness in the way she took command, even if it was in such a non-aggressive manner. He didn't argue, or object. In fact, it saved him the trouble of walking all the way back to his house, which was about the same distance from Blackjack's in the other direction. So for now he would oblige her commands.

It wasn't that Clark didn't notice the expression on her face when he asked about taking a shower. He recognized the specific expressions; Envisioning, and embarrassment. But he couldn't be convinced that she was picturing what would naturally assume. He still hadn't completely gotten past the way that she looked at him when he was in the cage. Those eyes...

He nodded his head when the woman answered his question. He didn't care where the bathroom was so long as it worked. He followed her through her room, eyes following her hand as it traced the sheets on her bed, and into the bathroom. He noted where she said the towels were, as he pulled a pair of sweatpants and a wife beater from his bag, and placed them near the shower. "I have my own soap thanks." He said with a laugh, shooing her from the bathroom as he turned on the hot water.

Once she was gone, he walked over to gather a towel. He picked a black one, as it was the most masculine color available, beating out white, yellow and pink. Steam began to fill the bathroom quickly as he placed the towel on top of his clothes, and disrobed. He had put one foot in the shower when he realized that he didn't have a cloth to wash with. He returned to the counter where he had gathered his towel to discover that there were none available. "Dammit..." He said to himself.

"Autumn!" He called out. "There aren't any rags in here! Could you hand me one?" He approached the door as he called to her, remaining far enough away from the door that it wouldn't hit him, but near enough that he could reach the washcloth when she reached in to hand in to hand it to him.

Bossy.

Autumn had to admit, she was being quite assertive with her decisions; though she also had to admit she liked being in charge like that. Clark didn’t object to her decisions, in fact he accepted them with ease. It was a little odd, but Autumn didn’t question it, she was glad she didn’t have to fight with him to stay. The city was dangerous at night; even more so knowing Blackjack’s goons could be lurking around any corner. Clark really was in danger, Autumn felt like it was her turn to protect him. And if that meant being a little bossy and out-of-character, then so be it. He would just have to deal with it.

The gutter.

Clark asked if he could take a shower. Thinking on it, that was probably a good idea. He was extremely sweaty from his fight - Autumn could explicitly remember how the lights in the cage lit up the solid, masculine ripples on his chiseled chest, even bouncing off the beginnings of the indented ‘v’ shape that traveled further down his shorts… Brown eyes went wide at the thought and a blush was immediately on her cheeks. What in the world was she thinking! Dead kittens and puppies, dead kittens and puppies.

“Of course you can take a shower - you probably need it.” She teased politely, gesturing him to follow her. “I only have one working bathroom at the moment, it’s being remodeled, so you’ll have to use the one in my bedroom, I hope you don’t mind…”

Much like the rest of the apartment, the bedroom was just as simple: a king size bed lay up against the wall with the ever so expensive Egyptian cotton sheets, a satiny grey, covering it. Two bed side tables lay on either side of the bed. The room was quite small, housing the bed, two tables, and a small beanbag chair in the corner on a fluffy white carpet.

Autumn led Clark through the bedroom, running her fingers across the sheets as she walked by - a mindless habit. Flipping on the light illuminated the rather large bathroom. A tub on one end, the shower on the other, and separating the two were bathroom counters - with the sink - and the toilet. A large mirror greeted them with the image of themselves. “Here you are. The towels are in the cupboard right here,” She said, patting on top the counter that held the towels before turning to face Clark. “If there’s anything else you need just ask, okay? Take as long as you need; relax, heal. I’ll even let you use my lavender vanilla body wash to open up your pores.” Another light tease, brown eyes twinkling with amusement.

Now that she was actually in the bathroom with him, the reality of the situation really hit home. He was going to shower. And like everyone else, he’ll be showering… naked…

Autumn’s thoughts instantly reverted to his sweaty body in the cage and that curious ‘v’ at his waist. Cheeks burned a pink, nearly unnoticeable against her dark complexion, and her teeth nibbled on her bottom lip once more. Her mind was definitely in the gutter.

Clark had to admit, Autumn's apartment was nice. It was clear that much more care had gone into putting it together than his own apartment, which was well furnished, but practically void of decorations. Based on his interactions with her, he wasn't sure what to expect. From the first time he saw her, maybe a wild party girl's pad. From earlier that morning, maybe an uppity business lady? But much to his relief, her home came into a very comfortable place between the two Homey, yet not trashy. The woman had good taste...

Autumn told him that he could make himself at home, and that he didn't have to worry about his shoes, but since she took her shoes off at the door, he did the same, placing them neatly by the door before following her into the living room and taking a seat on the couch. He thought to himself as she wandered further into the house. She was being quite hospitable; moreso than he would have thought, at least. It was funny to think that the first time he saw her, he had decided her to be a person he wouldn't get along with. Now, just over 24 hours later, he he was, her... Wait what was he? Friend wasn't the right word...Even associate didn't seem to fit. He decided that the best word he could come up with was "protector."

And then she returned from the room. The way she bit her bottom lip as she looked at him caught his attention. But the thought that it brought to mind caused his face to darken a bit, and he turned away, looking at the ground instead. He looked back, however, when she began talking, and declared that she wouldn't let him back out into the night so late. He couldn't help but chuckle a bit. Who was it that was protecting who?

When she asked him if he needed anything, he thought on her suggestions. He wasn't hungry, but he never finished his water bottle back at Blackjacks. And that was when it hit him. A sharp pain in his ribs began to sear through his entire body. He was sore beyond belief! Probably the first time he fully dropped his guard, since eh was now in a safe place. With the adrenaline faded, of course the pain would return. He was covered in sweat too. He wouldn't sleep on her couch like that. He looked down at his bag, which contained extra clothes. "I don't suppose I could take a shower?" He asked. "Don't want to have your living room smelling like a cage fight." He said with a laugh.

Homey.

Her apartment was clean and pristine, yet also had an air of comfort and coziness. The interior decor was laid out in a simple design with simple colors; black, white, grey, blue. Everything fit together well and appeared to be well-loved. A book lay on the coffee table between the couch and chair, just in front of the door that led out to the small little balcony - she did some morning reading earlier and thought it best to bring the book back inside, the book being Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, a personal favorite next to The Great Gatsby of course.

Autumn’s  choclatey brown eyes settled on Clark after she slipped her shoes off - they were killing her feet! Her smile turned genuine and reached her eyes with ease as she looked to him. “Come in! Don’t worry about your shoes.” She could tell just by looking at him that he was hesitant to come into her domain; but he was welcome. “Make yourself at home.” After flashing him an encouraging smile Autumn disappeared down the hall with her shoes to place them in her room.

Be my guest.

The mocha-skinned woman returned seconds later, nibbling delicately on her bottom lip as her eyes fell upon the man, hoping he made use of the couch and got comfortable. “It’s getting really late…” She trailed off, feeling her cheeks heat up to a million degrees.

A moment of silence passed, and in that moment Autumn decided she wasn’t going to be timid and shy! She was going to be her old, confident self. Squaring her shoulders and keeping her expression serious, Autumn leveled her eyes on Clark. “I’m not letting you go out there this late at night.” The woman stopped there, hoping he got the implication that he was going to spend the night. “So, since I’m trapping you here for the night, is there anything you need? A glass of water? Food? I’ve got plenty of food.”

Clark's first observation was that Autumn lived in the opposite direction of him.  It was evident that he had a long night ahead of him, and it was already close to 1am! He didn't complain though. He was doing what was right, and he was fine with that. The two didn't speak much along the way. they didn't make contact, But Clark did what he could to make Autumn feel safe. He was always within arms reach. He stayed on the side of her closest to the street, unless they passed clusters of bushes, or dark alleys. And eventually, they made it to her building, and she grabbed his hand to pull him along.

Clark chuckled to himself when she turned around to retrieve her key from her breasts, but the next thing she did took him by surprise. He didn't find it odd that she wanted him to walk her to her door, but he was a bit surprised when she invited him inside. That was, until he saw the look in her eyes. She was still afraid! He had been her security blanket, and now that they had arrived at her place, he really had no reason to continue to protect her. "I'll come in for a while." He said, offering a gentle smile.

Perhaps if he didn't find a new Fighting home, he could take up being a bodyguard! He thought, as he followed Autumn inside. Once they were in her apartment, and the door closed, he remained by the door. He knew that he had been invited inside, but he didn't want to cross any boundaries. Some people didn't want anyone wearing shoes in their house. Some didn't want anyone living the living room, or sitting on the furniture. To avoid being offensive, he decided to stay near the door until instructed otherwise.

"Are you alright?" He asked. The concern in his voice was evident, but it was more than just her fear of that man coming after her that he was concerned about. There were a million things going through Autumn's mind, and it was all over her face. "Do you want to talk about it?" It was an all-encompassing question. He could have been talking about the man she was at the fight with, or her sick pet cat! Whatever it was that was bothering her, he had put himself at her disclosure, despite being unsure if that was a good idea...

Self control.

Minutes ticked by with Autumn in Clark’s arms, tears streaming down her face - it was a good thing she didn’t wear a lot of makeup so she didn’t have to deal with black lines streaming down from her eyes. With his arm wrapped around her and a hand in her hair she couldn’t help but to feel safe. She knew now he wasn’t an animal and wouldn’t beat her up, but he would at least kick the ass of jerks like Garrett. Garrett… she would have to see him at work on Monday, if he even showed up. Who knew how long it would take him to heal.. She would deal with him then, she’d decided, for now every thought of her assailant was pushed to the back of her mind at the sound of Clark’s voice drifting through her ears with a soothing tone.

After a quick wipe under her eyes to ensure she didn’t look like death, Autumn followed behind Clark, staying close to his side with timid, jerky movements. Every turn they took through the mansion her eyes were peeled for Garrett’s angry and bloody face, expecting him to wait for her. Much to her relief they traversed the halls without seeing another soul, though as they neared a room, what Autumn assumed was Clark’s destination, men were stationed outside the door, protecting whoever lay within that room.

Autumn visibly gulped. Her whole body was tense, expecting something big to happen. Clark did beat Garrett up, and with the way Garrett was talking it seemed he was pretty close to whoever that Blackjack character was - or at least he paid a lot of money to impress Autumn.

Guilt.

Blackjack exploded at Clark. the mocha-skinned woman bit her red-painted lip. It was her fault Clark was getting punished. If she could just handle things on her own! If only she was stronger! Brown eyes dulled significantly with the rising guilt, looking down to the floor. God, she was such an idiot and Clark was punished for her mistakes. If Blackjack was crazy enough Clark could even be killed! That thought was far more intimidating than it should’ve been, considering she barely knew Clark to begin with. But she could trust him… Right?

Follow the leader.

When they made it outside Autumn took the lead without a peep. Her ears were peeled for any sound other than their lonely footsteps and her eyes were darting around; every so often she’d steal a glance over her shoulder to see if any of Blackjack’s men - or Garrett - were following them.

Autumn took the necessary turns and streets to make it to her apartment building. She had to turn away when they made it to the doorstep, fishing through her cleavage for her key. A few seconds of rummaging and she turned back around with the shiny key in hand, unlocking the door for the two of them and quickly locking it behind. Rather than take the stairs she led him to the elevator - there was no way in hell she’d walk up seven flights of stairs to the top floor where her apartment was.

Home sweet home.

Relief flooded through the woman when her door was in sight. Her pace quickened, a hand reaching out behind her to tug Clark along. Why she made him keep following her she didn’t know, but for some odd reason she was glad he was there. There was no telling what she could possibly do to fight off Garrett had he somehow managed to sneak his way into the apartment building and waited outside her door; which brought up another thought that made her blood run cold. He knew where she lived…

Autumn closed her eyes, and after taking several soothing breaths she opened her door and stepped in, turning around to face Clark with dull eyes. “Um..”

Awkward.

She didn’t know what to say! ‘Thank you for saving me from getting **** and possibly killed’? What a great foundation to build a relationship on! But wait a minute. Did she want to build a relationship with him? Was it possible to become friends with a guy who fought people for living - well, not anymore, thanks to her.

Here goes.

A deep breath: inhale, exhale.

An arm twitch.

Eye contact.

A forced smile.

“Thank you. Do you want to come in? I can call you a cab if you want?” The fear of rejection was evident on her face as she lent out  her invitation. Maybe he wanted nothing to do with her? She didn’t make the best impression on him. But.. it was a start. Great things had to start somewhere, even if it was from inviting the man who saved you from being sexually assaulted by a guy you thought you could trust. She also ruined his fighting career… It was the most faulty foundation ever - definitely not built up to code and regulation - but Autumn had hopes that something would be built on top.

It was decided.  Clark didn't like Autumn. He didn't like the way she looked at him.  Eyes that feared him were even worse than eyes that judged him.  In a way,  it was just another form of judgement. They saw him as a beast.  A wild animal with no form of training or values. Just because we was an underground fighter didn't mean he was an inherently violent Person,  and if she didn't realize that then she was the one who deserved to be left alone!

But then Clark realized that he was being too hard on her.  She had just been assaulted!  He could have **** her,  even killed her!  Of course she was afraid! She would be afraid of anyone at this point!  Especially a stranger! He released a quiet sigh and then did something she had never seen him do before;  he smiled.

It wasn't a big,  cheesy smile,  but a soft and comforting one,  one that was welcoming. But it quickly faded as the woman's fear was replaced with overwhelming emotion,  and she burst into tears. He wasn't sure what to do!  He didn't want to touch her and bother her more,  but he didn't leave her side either.  He remained silent for several minutes until her finally heard her voice.

"I want to go home."

He nodded his head in understanding,  preparing to speak in response,  when she got up and moved away from him.  He didn't understand. Her actions suggested she was both confiding in him and afraid of him at the same time!  It didn't make sense!  But as time passed,  she slowly regained her composer,  and spoke up again with more confidence.  It looked like she was going to be alright....

Wrong!  Without warning she suddenly feel into his chest.  Tears steamed down his bare chest as his arms hovered inches from her body,  uncertain of what to do. After a moment however,  he decided that she needed comfort more than she needed to be appropriate. A strong arm wrapped around her waist,  as the other supported the back of her head.  Her hair was so soft!   He held onto her as long as she needed before speaking up.  "Alright."  He said calmly.  "Let's get you home. " He assumed the man who attacked her had been her ride,  so he'd have to get her a new ride. "Let's go. " He said,  taking her down the hall and toward Blackjack's office.  "I need one of your guys to give us a ride home. " He said,  gesturing toward the emotionally disturbed woman.

The look on the underground businessman's face was not amused.  "You're kidding me right? " He stood to his feet, clearly angry.  "You just broke a man's face in my house!  My entire operation will be under investigation by morning! There's no way I'll be doing you any favors!  You're lucky i don't end you permanently!"

So it was clear.  Business between Clark and Blackjack were done,  and that meant his title as champion was a thing of the past. He didn't speak in response.  Narrow eyes glared at the pale skinned man before he turned and walked out the door.  "I'll walk you..." He said to Autumn,  now wishing he had taken the time to buy a car. He stopped to grab sweatpants from his bag and put them over his shorts, then the on a tank top and a long sleeved shirt.  He lead her down the status and waited for her to tell him which way they were going. Hopefully it wasn't too far...

Burned.

Garrett’s hand and tongue only had one more minute against her skin before someone tore him away from her. Even then Autumn kept her eyes closed, leaning heavily against the wall for support - it was the only thing keeping her on her feet, her whole body was shaking and even with him off of her it still felt like he was touching her. She felt slimy, nasty. She needed to clean every last ounce of him off her skin. Garrett was a coworker, a friend, someone she trusted enough to go on a date with. And look at her, made a fool, would’ve been taken advantage of if it weren’t for her savior; the one and only Clark.

Safe.

Brown eyes fluttered open when his now calm voice tickled her ears. With Garrett gone she felt more secure, but Clark was still a wild card. Who knew when he would break? Autumn didn’t answer his question, and when he ushered her into the room she flinched away from his encouraging hand. She didn’t want to be touched, or even looked at. Her body continued its shaking, even with Garrett gone. And when she sat in the proffered seat she wrapped her arms around herself as a makeshift shield from the outside world.

The last time she felt so used and vulnerable was when she was a kid; picked on for her gawky teeth and her flat chest. That was the last time she told herself she could cry. She was strong, independent; but right now the thing she wanted most was to cry to her mother. Autumn imagined being wrapped up in those soft arms - arms that had no implications of immense muscle, but were strong in their own way - being rocked back and forth, magical kisses placed on top of her head with words that could protect her from anything. In the worst of times, Autumn was able to find safety in her mother, but right now her mother was hours away and Autumn was in no condition to drive all the way there.

Break.

Thinking of her mother was a bad idea. It only took a matter of seconds before tears started falling from her eyes. Hands moved to cover her face so Clark couldn’t see - how embarrassing. Now he must think of her as some crybaby ****.

Clark’s questions rolled right off her, ignored for the time being as her sobs quaked her body. It took only five minutes for her to buck up and stop crying. Now was not the time to cry. Now was the time to get the hell out of there. Watery brown eyes looked up, finally connecting with Clark’s. “I want to go home..” Her voice was small and timid, like a scared child - which suited her quite well at the current moment. Autumn shot up out of her seat, taking several steps away from him to ensure he couldn’t attack her like Garrett. “I want to go home.” She said, this time with more confidence. Her shaking had never stopped, but it became more tamed as she gained more control over herself, stray tears fell from her eyes but she didn’t look like she was going to break down again - especially in front of him.

Despite her words, Autumn had yet to make a move for the door and leave. Maybe it was because he was positioned between her and the door, so she was scared. Or perhaps it was because she finally noticed the concern in his eyes; she could trust him. He had yet to make a move on her even when she was most vulnerable.

Oh boy.

It was coming. Lips turned down into a frown, eyes forced shut and tears began to fall again. The woman threw herself at him, burying her face into his chest despite the sweat that covered him. Her arms were cradled to her chest, and she looked to him for nothing more than safety. He’d stop Garrett’s attack, and sat there when she was crying. It was up to him what he was going to do now.

Blackjack's attendants were always right on the bar when it came to doing their jobs. Before leaving Clark in the room designated for their meeting with his guests, they made sure he had everything he needed. His job wasn't over for the night, so of course they had been ordered to make him as comfortable as possible. He sat down on the couch with a water bottle in his left hand, and his right hand holding a bag of ice to his face. He had only taken one blow to the head, and he had confirmed that his jaw wasn't broken, but it still hurt like hell...

The pain seemed to shoot back and forward from his face to his abs and chest. It had been a long time since "Blaze" took a beating like that! He winced as he removed the ice bag from the right side of his jaw, as it was starting to go numb. He then placed it over the left side of his abdomen. He surely had some bruised ribs... But he was lucky that he hadn't ended up worse. He was lucky that his opponent was so poorly trained. Yeah, he was strong, but he was no real fighter. In fact, if he hadn't seen that girl in the crowd..

!!!

Autumn! Why did she come back? From the look on her face the night before, he figured that she must have been appalled by cage fighting! Why would she return to watch another fight? Why did she appear so different this time? She was dressed classier, and the expression on her face was... And who was the guy she was with? He released a low groan as the pain in his abs started to dull. It wasn't as if he couldn't feel anything, it was just a less intense kind of pain.

Ten minutes! Clark had promised to stick around for ten minutes! At least that much time had passed and still no one had shown up! Had the guy forgotten that he had already paid for this meeting? Or maybe he realized he was going to get some action and skip out! Regardless, Clark decided he was going to leave. Blackjack should be more respectful of his time if he wanted to keep their business arrangement going...

He grabbed his bag, and was getting ready to get dressed when he heard the sound of a scream coming from down the hallway. What the hell? Someone calling for help? Since when could anyone pull off anything in here? Blackjack kept security tighter than the White House! Something must have been happening upstairs, where guests weren't allowed and Security was nearly non-existent. He rushed out into the hall and his heart nearly stopped in response to what he saw! It was Autumn! And the guy she was with downstairs... they had appeared to be on a date earlier but now...

The strike would come without warning, Clark could feel the man's jaw shatter against his bare fist before he was knocked to the ground several feet away. It was starting to become very evident that Clark and Blaze were two very separate people. The man with the fire in his eyes; The fire that stared down at a very broken and shocked Garrett. He was Blaze. Those eyes could belong to no one else, not even Clark. They were the property of the fighting legend known as Blaze. Blaze, who had now broken one man's nose, and another man's Jaw in less than 30 minute's time. He was passionate, and relentless. He didn't feel pain, and he didn't back down...

He could smell the alcohol lingering in the air around where the woman's assailant had been standing. It was no excuse. And now, he was probably fully sober. "Get out..." He didn't yell. But the authority in his voice was unmistakeable. Garrett hesitated at first, contemplating whether he would leave without Autumn, but one step forward from Blaze made up his mind quickly, Adrenaline rushing him down the stairs and out of the house, through the pain of his broken jaw. If he was smart, he would get himself to a hospital.

Inhale.... Exhale...A much calmer man then turned to face Autumn. "Are you alright?" He asked, ushering her into the room where he was unknowingly about to meet her and the very man he had just chased off. He still wasn't sure that he liked this woman, but seeing her like this, so beautiful, and so vulnerable... It made her much more likable. He ushered her to a seat, and offered her a look of concern. "You aren't hurt, are you?" He didn't know much about the situation, but for some reason, he now felt responsible for her wellbeing. Perhaps because he had already jumped in. "Who was that guy?"

Resonance.

A squeeze roused the dark skinned woman out of her thoughts. Garrett was excited, Doom was landing some hard punches on Clark, but Autumn was biting her lip in worry with eyes forced shut, focusing all of her attention on the fight despite not seeing it. The sounds that reached her ears weren’t the crazed cheers of the crowd - not even the yell of encouragement coming from Garrett beside her - but the sounds of Doom’s fists hitting Clark. The resonance of those sounds were unnerving, scary. How bad was Clark hurt? He was definitely going to hurt tomorrow, those punches weren’t childsplay.

All of a sudden the fleshy sounds of the hits stopped. Autumn’s eyes snapped open. Finally the loud cheers of the crowd reached her ears, filling them with so much noise she was surprised she could even hear at all. Clark now stood several feet away from Doom, positioned in a different fighting stance. But what caught Autumn’s attention the most were his eyes; emblazoned with a passion that took her breath away.

And the winner is…

Blaze!

Red stained lips drew back in a smile, her brown eyes focused intently on Clark with his fist in the air to signify his dominant win. Autumn let go of the breath she’d been holding, chest rapidly rising and falling as if she’d been the one fighting. Clark may not have come away from that fight clean of injuries, but he was far better off than Doom, who lay on the floor of the cage with his now multi-colored eyes shut and an expression of both pain and disbelief on his face - he would definitely be hurting for the next few days.

Thrown into fire.

Autumn was preparing to leave, and just as she was about to lead the way to the door Garrett’s arm slide around her and pulled her to him, a playful yet drunken twinkle in his eye. She’d been too absorbed in the fight to know just how much he had drank, but from the smell of his breath it was alot. ”We’re not leaving yet, baby. Blackjack promised me something special for tonight.”

Because that didn’t sound creepy. Dark brows drew together but she agreed to go with him anyways, reaching to her hip to pull his sinking hand up to her waist - his hands were getting awfully comfortable with her body.

Garrett led her through the crowd, cutting across the whole room to get to a door. He opened it and ushered her through, a hand resting on her ass to guide her. Once more Autumn rose his wandering hand, which caused him to chuckle from behind her.

Before she knew what was happening she was pushed up against the wall, only a few feet from the door to their destination, with her so called date attacking her neck and chest, one hand on the wall and the other running up and down her side with a harsh grip to keep her from moving. While it was apparent Garrett was enjoying his time, Autumn was doing her best to get him off. Kicking, pushing, flailing. Nothing helped. Garrett pressed his hips against hers, rendering her waist immobile, and gathered her wrists in one of his hands, both without hesitation as he continued to lick across her skin, his tongue finding the delicate dip between her breasts.

“Garrett! Get off!”

When he made no move to release her Autumn began to panic.

“Help! Somebody help me!”

The fight was going well. Doom was bigger and stronger than Blaze, but as he had discovered in their last fight, Clark was far quicker, and much more agile. When Doom threw the first punch, The champ was quick to counter, managing to throw his opponent to the ground. After that, Doom fought more cautiously. He didn't give Clark any openings, however, he was still unable to land a blow.

That was, until Clark lay eyes on Autumn. She was with a guy this time, instead of other girls, but that wasn't what bothered him. Her expression was completely different than the last time. There was no judgement. No scorn, no disappointment. In fact, her eyes seemed to be full of hope, and concern, almost as if she was... Rooting for him? For a split second, Clark forgot that he was in a fight. He was simply absorbed in those slanted brown eyes...

But a split second was all it took in a fight. Dropping your guard in the heat of battle, for even a moment could mean the difference between life and death, and Blaze would pay for his mistake dearly. He took the hit straight to the jaw. The blow was so hard that it turned his body almost a full 180 degrees! His hands flew up to catch the cage before his body hit it face first. And just like that, Doom was all over him, landing body blow after body blow, as Blaze was only able to protect his head. A punch to the gut forced blood from the Champ's mouth, and half the crowd was going wild!

There were those who were rooting for anyone but Blaze to win. But his **** fans shouted words of encouragement! They urged him not to give up! to keep fighting! And then the opportunity arose. Just once, Doom swung a little too wide, leaving his midsection wide open. Without a moment's  hesitation, Clark's hands drove up to grab his opponents shoulders, and used his weight to pull himself up, driving his knee into his opponents gut, and forcing him back, giving Blaze enough time to regain his composure.

The look in Clark's eyes was one of fury now. Perhaps this was where he got his name from; His eyes were emblazoned with a hard to place emotion. It wasn't rage, but a passion of a similar sort. His stance this time was completely different than before. A few people in the crowd may have been able to identify it as Muay Thai. Now he was serious. And that wasn't good for Doom...

The larger man charged practically head first, blinded by anger. His supporters were sure that he was going to crush the champ like a bug now that he was pissed. But he wasn't thinking clearly. Clark easily pivoted out of the man's path and dug his elbow into the side of Doom's face; Instant black eye. But before Doom could fall away, His head was already caught in Clark's grasp, and another knee was flying toward his face!

The broken nosed Doom lay on the ground, in too much pain to move. This was what set Blaze apart from the other competitors. He wasn't just a street fighter. He was a true martial artist.  "And the winner, yet again! BLAZE!!!" The champ spit a mouthful of blood onto the ground and raised his fist once more, stepping out of the cage to accept his payment. He was preparing to leave. When one of Blackjacks lackeys placed a hand on his shoulder. "Dammit..." He followed the man up the stairs, to where Blackjack was waiting. "You didn't forget our agreement, did you?" Narrow eyes glared at the man, as he was ushered into the room where he was supposed to meet this couple. "Ten minutes!" He called back, awaiting their arrival.

Doom.

Shortly after they settled into their spot, the lights were cut out and a voice boomed through the crazy room, announcing the opponent for the night. When she first heard the name, Autumn snorted. Doom? Childish; it was laughable, really. Who calls themselves Doom? Garrett, beside her, didn’t caught her moment of humor, rather his eyes were glued to the cage before him. He leaned down towards her, positioning his lips close to her ear. ”Last time they met, Doom gave Blaze a run for the title. A lot of people are rooting for him this time around, says Blaze pays off his challengers to win..” His voice continued to chirp in her ear, but Autumn tuned him out when she caught sight of him; Clark, Blaze, the Reigning Champ.

Even she had to admit the Doom guy was massive; he was all muscle, a cocky sonofabitch, but it looks like he has every right to be cocky. When Clark entered the cage Autumn couldn’t take her eyes off of him. Standing next to Doom, Clark looked small and skinny. In her mind, he was the underdog and she found herself rooting for him as the bell rung. Hopefully he wasn’t doomed for a loss - hopefully he wouldn’t get hurt..

Ding, ding, ding.

At the sound of the bell the two men circled around each other, sizing the other up before attacking. Just as she expected, Doom was the first to attack, a wide swing at Clark’s head. Worried brown eyes looked away, focusing on the drink in her hand. She couldn’t watch - couldn’t see him get hurt. And by the sounds of the crowd something big happened; what? She didn’t want to know. Just thinking about him getting punched in the face made her stomach twist in deep knots.

Awe.

A chuckle sounded beside her. Garrett leaned in towards her once more, nonchalantly placing his hand on the small of her back, fingers finding the gentle curve of her backside as if it were second nature. Autumn didn’t want to overthink it, trusting Garrett and believing that he was just caught in the heat of the moment, so she made no move to shrug off his hand. ”I’ve got to admit, Clark is good. Can’t believe Doom hasn’t been able to land one hit on the guy..”

Autumn’s head snapped up so her eyes could find the cage, curls bouncing on her head. There he was, dodging swing after swing. It was only a matter of time before he got hit, but now Autumn couldn’t turn her eyes away from him. She was in awe; he was amazing. The fluidity and confidence with which he moved, it was beautiful.

Inspire.

Clark continued to dodge, and for the next few seconds Autumn had her eyes glued to the fight, brows furrowed as if searching for something. And she did. Clark’s eyes locked on hers. Red-painted lips curved up into a small smile, her gaze gaining a hint of passion as if urging him to do his best. And then it happened.

Doom swung, Clark was distracted. The hit landed. Autumn’s body tensed, her gaze immediately snapping away as she turned into Garrett beside her, his hand sliding further down her back in the process. She was too worried to even notice; despite her eyes not focusing on the fight, her ears were peeled for any sound, searching for any indication that Clark was hurt.

”Not a fan of fighting, huh?” The deep voice sounded in her ear, distracting her from the fight. Garrett’s arm tightened around her, pulling her even close. She could smell the alcohol on his breath, though she remained silent. ”Don’t worry, okay? They’ve trained for this, they’re expecting to get hurt. Don’t feel bad for them..”

But she couldn’t. Couldn’t stop thinking about Clark, couldn’t stop worrying about him. For some odd reason he was the center of her attention, yet only proved to be a jerk. Things were getting confusing.
