The cold air was pleasant against her now heated skin, taking a seat and staring at her husband, not letting her eyes waver even for a second. Danielle was angry, but she was also disappointed, and it wasn’t in her husband, but in herself. The attack had taken a toll on her, but she didn’t expect it to come back with a wave of trauma from her past, which it did, but to top it all off, she couldn’t control herself when the memories did come and go, she lost control of all her emotions, and not being in control was such a foreign concept to her that it threw her off completely. Not to mention, she hated being dependent on medication, pills just made everything real, it cemented the fact that she wasn’t okay, and she wasn’t ready to come face to face with that reality yet.

Her gaze flickered to the streets, and it dawned on her how upsetting it was that they were shrouded in such beauty but all she wanted to do was sleep, she didn’t want to go out and explore the beautiful city they had come to adore, most of their mornings were spent on the balcony and most of their afternoons in the bedroom. Well, her afternoons anyway. Alesso went out now and again, even tried persuading her to do the same, but most times she was too tired to move. The idea of having to walk around seemed like too much of a heavy task.

Turning her gaze back to her husband, she furrows her brows and frowns.

“And you didn’t think to tell me first?!”

Alesso getting the medication she needed was a good thing, admittedly, but the fact he kept it a secret from her hurt. It made her question everything, which she wouldn’t usually do but given the circumstances, it seemed like the best thing to do. Though she was angry, and the emotion bubbled in her stomach, she couldn’t help the ring of warmth around her orbs when she looked at the man, knowing full well he would take advantage of that like he always did.

A smile crept back onto his face as he knew her answer. Alesso scooped the plates and utensils into his hands and began his stroll out of the kitchen. Alesso walked up the stairs just as the first syllable passed through her lips. He cruised up the flight, through the bedroom, and out onto the balcony with little problem of the environment. He set her plate down in front of her favorite chair and then his to her left. He placed the utensils on napkins and took his seat, waiting for his beloved to join him once more.

He sat still, his arm hung over the railing as she arrived with their drinks. The only noise now was the warm breeze that passed over the open air balcony and the muffled sound of kids now playing inside the home next door. Never a dull moment.

His eyes followed her to her seat. Alesso watched as she spoke short, simple words and kept watching as she began to cut up her meal into small bits and eat. The corner of his lips sunk down as he twisted himself to look out over into the wide world before them. Finally, after she had eaten much of her food he, he sighed and spoke.
“I filled the prescription the doctor gave you back in Venice.” He turned his eyes towards her and nodded toward her pocket. “I know you found them. And the quiet morning tells me you’re angry.” He brought his elbows to either side of his plate. He folded his fingers together and let his forearms and formed fist rest on the table before him. “My Love, You can’t tell me there is nothing wrong. They’re meant to help you with what happened and you need to take them.”

He leaned back and picked up his drink. He brought the glass to his lips and took a small sip before setting it back down. Alesso watched for his wife’s reaction to such a statement. He didn’t expect it to go his way, but it needed to be done. Alesso relaxed back into the hard metal chair. Never before had the colder iron felt like bars he was backed into instead of a comfort. He shifted himself once.

If Danielle had come to know anything about Alesso over the years is that if a confrontation had the possibility to be postponed, he wouldn’t dispute it. Of course, now, it was no different, but the pills had caused her heart to tighten with emotion; anger, mostly. She watches his back as he continues to cook before he stops to walk over to her, teasing her. And though her mind wasn’t there entirely, she did bury her anger beneath the other emotions he so easily drew from her. The first, is a taste of lust as he toyed with her warmth for but a second, quickly dissipating as he takes the unfinished cigarette to put it out on the countertop. He disapproved of the habit she had picked up, but it didn’t stop her from smoking around him.

Perhaps it was the smell that got to him, but the kitchen was filled with a different smell now, and it made her stomach grumble. She hadn’t eaten properly for the last two days and it was becoming visible.

“Balcone.”

Knowing he would take everything upstairs before she would even get the word out, she grabs her favourite drink from fridge, filling a cup with the succulent red juice; cold cranberry, topping it with two ice cubes, before filling his cup with orange bits. With that dne, she picks up both glasses and follows him up the stairs and onto the balcony. Placing the glasses down, she simply stands and looks out at the city - and what a breathtaking city it was. It was the commotion that made it so beautiful, there was never a dull moment on the streets of Verona. And the sun. The sun kisses her olive skin, having developed a natural tan over the years, one that was permanent now. After a while, she takes a seat, and looks over at the man, smiling softly as she picks up the fork and knife beside her plate.

“Buon appetito.”

Though the woman could only manage a few bites, she takes her time cutting up the omelet into small pieces so it made it more manageable. It helped her digest it better and to be frank, there was no rush. They didn’t have any errands to run today, so they let the sun and the laughter of their neighbours be their company for breakfast.

Alesso grinned as she snuck in behind him. His arms wrapped over hers and laced their fingers together as he turned his head over his left shoulder and looked at her. “I missed you, too, my love.” He released her hands as her arm fell away from his body and she moved to take care of the rest of the groceries for the day. An internal sigh went through his head as he heard the soft crumple of the plastic bag and the sudden stop of the brown paper bag rustling. His wife was sick, not stupid. And he should have placed the groceries away before she ever made it down the stairs. But she said nothing, so they postponed the real match until a later hour.

He looked back to her and grinned as she hopped onto the island counter behind him, shaking his head as the second view gave him all he needed on the current state of dress his wife was in. Alesso wiped the spatula with a cloth and went about mixing in the center of an omelet. The smell of the smoke mixed with the smell of the food and he shook his head. A few minutes to cook.

Alesso turned and stared directly into the eyes of his wife. He approached her slowly and placed his hand on her knee. “Veggie ommmeeeelllleeeettttttttsss” As he extended out the second word, his hand slipped from knee, to inner thigh, under the robe itself and to the womanhood that waited beneath. His nose and forehead touched hers and he just watched her for a moment. His free hand came up and snatched the lit cigarette from her lips and put it out on the counter. He pressed the remaining length of the cigarette down until it smooshed and folded several times. “You’re going to ruin your breakfast with that. And I expect you to eat with me, dearest.”

He pulled back slightly, licked the tip of her nose and smiled before slipping his hand out from the robe and returning to flipping the nearly finished food. “It will only be a few minutes more, My love.” He gave the heat a little more time to do its work, sprinkled some seasoning and parsley on the top and slid the first pan’s Omlete onto the plate. Then followed the process with the second. “Where would you like to eat today?”

Danielle’s sense of security was completely dependent on her husband. Ever since the attack, she never felt completely at ease so despite the alcohol, and the drugs her leg still rocked up and down, shaking with anticipation. She anticipated his return, and before she snuffs out her cigarette she sees him turn the road. Oh how handsome he was walking through the streets and playing with the children. They reminded her of their own, a sadness clutching her soul as she begins to reminisce. The girls had built a life for themselves, but Danielle missed having someone to take care of, someone of her flesh, and of her blood who relied on her completely. For a moment, she isolates the thought, letting it linger in her mind and fill her heart with excitement before hopping out the door and rushing downstairs.

Her steps were small but quick as she enters the kitchen, walking over to her husband so she could wrap her arms around his midsection from where she stood behind him.

“I missed you.”

She did. Even his scent filled the room, the furniture exposed to his fragrance and lapping it up, it felt warm and inviting. His strong arms made her feel like she was protected so when he left she would panic a little. It alarmed her especially when he would take longer than usual, perhaps because there’d be traffic, or he’d stop to help someone out. Alesso was extremely caring and when it came to the people he loved, he’d risk his own life in a heartbeat for them.

She lets him go after a while to empty the contents of the brown bags, and proceeded to put all the groceries away. Her eyes roam over the food in the fridge before closing it with a sigh; nothing seemed appetising. She gets to the last item, wrapped in a separate bag and buried under everything else. Her forehead creases when she unwraps it and finds the pills, staring at her husband as her blood boils in her chest.

Deciding it best to keep quiet she lets him cook, and hops onto the counter, staring out into space and eventually getting lost in her own thoughts. Her mind wandered to the children outside; the look on their faces when Alesso had given them the chocolate was priceless. She missed being a carefree child, full of innocence like them, with no worries in the world. The busy street was ideal for her; even when Alesso wasn’t at home, she was never alone really. The neighbours woke at the crack of dawn, sending their children off to school. In the afternoon, the kids would fill the streets with their laughter. Danielle enjoyed the noise because it helped block the noises in her head out. Without even thinking she reaches for a pack and pulls her second cigarette of the day out, lighting it as Alesso continues preparing breakfast, though this time she was smoking to release the stress that manifested into a knot in her throat.

“What’re you making?”

She tilts her head slightly when she looks in his direction, blowing the smoke into the air and watching herself get swallowed by the grey clouds; the change in her attitude was blatant. Danielle was a woman who possessed a sexual charm effortlessly. Her hair was always in a messy wave but it framed her high cheekbones and hollow eyes perfectly; eyes that changed colour under different lights. Her petite body clothed her black satin robe, that had splits running down the sides. When she lifts her leg onto the counter, without meaning to, she bares her thigh, exposing herself entirely as it was the only piece of clothing she wore at home. Why did her husband buy her pills? She hadn’t even gotten a chance to read the label, having stuffed it into her pocket as quick as she had taken it out.

The early light of dawn cast a long shadow along the cobblestone streets of the city. Italy, entirely, always managed to catch the man’s breath in his throat as he looked off into the silent morning. Shadows retreated from every step as the sun banished them back beneath the brick buildings, the black pooling beneath the feet of passer-by as they meandered along the awakening streets. The sleepy sun continued its accent and Alesso found himself lost in the light reflected off the Adige River as he crossed the Ponte Pietra back towards the apartment where his love awaited his return.

Alesso stopped in the middle of the bridge and looked out at the long winding waters through the city center. He rested for a moment, the bag of market goods strung over his shoulder as he brought his left elbow to lean against the stone railing. Alesso brought his head down and reset his aviator shades against the brim of his nose as teeth flashed from behind his lips. “Never a dull moment in the city.” He sighed as he leaned back up, lingered a moment longer and then continued on his way. Breakfast was waiting and soon the streets would crowd, the heat would come, and breakfast would bake before he ever got home.

He continued along his way, his leather boots tapping a soft beat against the road before him. Alesso, impeccable dressed as always, drew attention throughout the city as he walked. Perfect posture melded seamlessly with his measured steps. His tailored, baby blue collared shirt remained seemingly motionless with every step. The sleeves rolled to just above his elbows seemed ironed flat with precision. And despite the rising temperature, he remained true to his black slacks. Today he opted for black suspenders instead of a belt. He turned the heads of locals. Men and women alike, but his eyes never strayed from the path before him. A left lead into a left and then to the right.  Almost home.

Alesso let a frown creep over his face for a moment. Lonesome walks made it easy for dark thoughts to creep into the mind. He simply wondered if his market trip would be in vain. As of late, Danielle ate less and less. Since Venice everything had maintained a status quo, but he could feel the inching differences taking place. Considering the circumstances, Alesso had taken the liberty of filling the prescription the doctor had written for his dearest. The pill bottle jangled with its contents below breakfast. He hoped he could think of some way to convince her to take them, but also debated with himself on the best means he would bring up the topic. The Attack was fresh on both their minds, still, some weeks after. His brow furrowed as he imagined losing his beloved to the beast that ate at her.

They had opted for a two story villa within a neighborhood that never seemed to sleep. The sound of people and children was constant and each person within shouting distance. She had insisted on such a place instead of an apartment or hotel. It wasn’t the most expensive rental they had lived in, but it certainly made the top five of his list. If it gave her piece of mind, it was worth every Lira or Euro he spent. Alesso waved to the neighbors and the children flooded him when he reached within eyesight of them. He had gotten in the habit of handing out candy, and this man was never one to disappoint, despite the playful ire it drew from their parents.

“Signore, Signore. Hai caramelle oggi?” Alesso nodded “Si, Si.” He reached into the bag and handed the eldest of the group three bars of chocolate. “Ecco qui” The kids cheered in victory and ran off to divvy their loot between the five of them. Alesso nodded to the mothers as they shook their heads and laughed at the bright faces that ran back towards them. “Signore Le’mont, Sei troppo gentile” Alesso nodded and fished his keys from his pocket. “Non menzionarlo.” He undid the locks to the door and stepped through the threshold.

Cold air met him. The one thing he appreciated more than the fully furnished indoors was how well the house trapped the cold inside of the first floor and hugged it tight enough to never let it leave. He took in a breath five degrees cooler than outside. He redid the locks and made his way into the kitchen. He fished items for breakfast out of his bag and began the morning ritual of preparing their first meal of the day. Alesso called gently and his voice carried through the open atrium to the second floor above the staircase. “Danielle, I have returned. Ready for Breakfast?” And he busied himself with the cooking.

Verona, Italy.

Danielle was awakened by the prying sun, it’s light causing her to pull the covers over her head, groaning into her pillows. She tried to deny it but it lingered there, judgmentally. Her husband had run to the market to grab some bits for breakfast. Their villa was cozy, and as Danielle stretches and sits up, she is met with the most breathtaking landscape. The sun is rising over Verona, casting a light on all the tall buildings and green trees. The bars on her balcony glistened as she finally gave in and got up. First, a shower.

The woman often times woke up in hot flashes from the nightmares. She hadn’t completely opened up about the attack, despite the various therapy sessions. She didn’t need the medicine. Her husband was enough.

The cold water she splashes against her cheeks brings her back from that train of thought, looking at her reflection in the mirror, finding it hard to swallow the image in front of her. A pale woman, with hollow dark eyes. Cheekbones so high, she looked malnourished and tired. It was in the depth of her emerald gaze, her fatigue.

It doesn’t take a minute before she’s back in the bedroom, crossing over to the balcony with her pack in one hand, and a glass in the other. Alcohol, cigarettes, and weed was her coping mechanism, it distracted her, took her away for a moment. It was all she needed in a day, one moment. Where there is absolute peace. Of the heart, of the mind. That’s why she started her mornings with a shot. She takes a cigarette and places it between her lips, lighting it up and inhaling. The smoke felt like a friend, hugging her lungs, enjoying the taste of tobacco before exhaling.

Danielle sits on the balcony with her drink, and her cigarette for ten minutes, self-contemplating. Waiting for Alesso to come back.

He sighed, his shoulders slouching down as he tilted his head towards his wife. His head shook from side to side as he chuckled and watched her retrieve the first aid kit. The wounds had already started closing and Alesso could feel the repairing of his flesh as tendrils of flesh pushed towards one another and gripped closed the deeper wounds. The blood had stopped trickling before Danielle returned with the first aid kit.

He watched her wipe the blood away and tend to his bruises and before long finish up cleaning him up.

He laughed at her as she spoke to him and straightened himself up as she rested her digits against his face. He leaned into her palm and set his nose against her finger as he gazed at her. He caught the shade in her eye and his own look softened as he placed his hands against her lap before he leaned in and planted a soft kiss on her lips. “You worry too much.” He said in Italian.

“But I guess that’s what keeps us together so well.” He laughed.

He took her hand and pulled her over from the coffee table to sit next to him. His body leaned into hers and he watched the wall in front of them, losing himself in thought a moment as he fixated on one spot in front of him.

Her eyes scan the room as he mentions the chocolate, sighing softly when she couldn’t find it, though in her visibly stressed state that was bound to be the case. So much had happened in the span of 30 minutes that not only was she physically exhausted but emotionally drained too. She watched, fear and worry etched over her features, as Alesso wiped the blood trickling down his forehead.

“No, look, it can’t wait.”

That’s what Danielle was like, overly anxious about everything, though sometimes she feared it would scare her husband away. Clearing her mind of such depressing thoughts, she makes her way quickly to their bathroom to grab the first aid box and before long, she was back at his side, sitting on the coffee table, and emptying the contents of the box in her lap.

“I do remember,” her voice is soft, as she soaks some cotton in an antibacterial solution, to then slowly wipe at any bruises visible to her - it was strange, how fast her husband healed sometimes but she remembered the night he talked about like it was yesterday. He had always been so overprotective, and the woman cherished that so much about him, she felt, that she didn’t tell him enough how appreciative she was.

As she finishes tending to his cuts and bruises, she looks down at him, a look of worry still clouding her gaze before cupping his cheek gently, being careful not to cause him any unnecessary discomfort. There were no words she could find to fill the space between them, so she just continued to look down at him, nibbling on her bottom lip nervously.

He chuckled weakly to himself and looked at her. With a shake of his head he dropped himself into her lap and let out a deep sigh. His eyes stared off into the ceiling as he smirked. “I was at the meeting. It ran late and stopped to get you the flower and the…” Alesso looked around the room for a moment and then he stretched his arms above his head for a second. “Chocolates… Which apparently are gone now. I’m sure they didn’t go too far.”

The sirens stopped and He could hear the footsteps coming from outside as the police finally made to the apartment and came rushing in. Alesso laughed quietly to himself as he pushed off his wife and managed to struggle himself to his feet. He braced himself against the couch that had been moved. They stared at him for a moment and then began to ask their questions.

Alesso answered the questions as they were thrown his way, giving an avid description of the man who had attacked his wife and ended up fighting with He saw the questioning looks the two officers gave his wife as she told them not to call the ambulance and chuckled to ease the tension. “We’ll have our own doctor check me out, officers, No need to fret. I’ve been beat up worse.” His Italian seemed to put them more at ease. They took one more look to his wife and then back to Alesso, who nodded. “Thank you for coming. Please, be careful out there.”

The Police tipped their hats and let Alesso and Danielle that they would let them know if anything turned up. Alesso nodded and walked them out himself, closing door as they left before turning back to Danielle with a smirk.

I’ll be alright. Don’t fret over cleaning them too soon.” He brought the back of his hand to his forehead and wiped a trickle of blood he felt sliding down his face with a chuckle. “Well. Haven’t been in a scrap like that since that one time at the Club.” He laughed lightly, the boisterousness tricking instantly into a snicker as he wrapped an arm around his stomach again. “Now that was a scrap, remember?” He shook his head and walked over, moving the couch back into place before plopping down on it with a wince.

Long before they had come to Italy, Danielle had envisioned what life here would be like; all roses, and twinkling lights. The long canals worked its way around the city like a lover retracing steps and though it was beautiful, she would’ve never thought she’d end up in this situation; sat on the floor, with a bruised and bloodied husband in her lap, barely able to laugh.

The rose on the floor brings a smile to her lips and as her husband wipes a stray tear from her cheek, she presses her lips to his finger, kissing it softly.

“Where did you go?”

It was a pitiful and weak attempt to distract him from the pain, but if she hadn’t been so impulsive they wouldn’t even be in this mess. The sirens only continue to get louder, but before she knows it the irritating sound dies out.

In her head, she counts the steps that lead up to their little apartment complex. Two officers rushed through the door, scanning the room briefly before walking over, concern sketched all over their faces. The larger one of the two had a thin nose and a head that seemed too heavy for his shoulders. He takes out his pen and notebook, beginning to ask questions while the other reached into his pocket to grab his phone. He begins dialing for the ambulance but Danielle stops him from actually calling.

“No, no need, I’ll take care of him,” she spoke broken Italian, but her accent was like a compass, always leading her home, and always holding her back from fitting in completely. They took the description of the man, and after a while, let themselves out.

“Come, my love,” though she hated herself for disturbing him, she needed to clean up his cuts before they got infected, “we need to get you cleaned up.”

fatiguing much faster than his wall of a beast, but he kept himself going. When the man finally got the upper hand Alesso was the first to notice his wife coming over head and he closed his eyes and turned his face just in time to avoid being sprayed in the eyes with glass.

Alesso turned back, blocking his attacker from grabbing on his throat as he tried to remove the man from on top of him once more. This time, Alesso was more worn out than he had realized.

But the quick thinking of his wife to get to the phone and dial for help saved Alesso before his strength finally gave out. The man dashed from the apartment and Alesso laid on the ground, an arm wrapped around his stomach as he chuckled to himself. He almost found it in himself to laugh, but he kept it tied back because it hurt even to giggle as he was.

He looked up at Danielle as she finally made her way over to him. His smug eyes staring into her damp ones as she smirked against her ‘I’m going to kill you myself’ gaze. He braced himself on his own arm and then moved so that he leaned into her lap. The sirens where already coming down the street as he reached up and stroked away the tear from her face.

“I don’t know… I think I might agree with you.” He winced as he let out a small laugh and laid there. The police would arrive soon enough to take statements. “I hope you remember your… sssss… Italian, my dear. You might be talking.” He wrapped his arm tighter around his stomach and smirked at her.

Danielle continued to eye her husband as he completely ignored her, and she knew why. He always crumbled under that look - it was his one weakness, and in a moment like this, it served him right to avoid her. Now, she watched with frightened eyes as he practically knelt on the ground, her brows furrowed in confusion. A few muffled disputes from her was enough to cut the tension so thick in the room, it couldn’t be sliced with a knife and as the man fell for Alesso’s trick and played right into his hand, she found herself being pushed away, to be kept from interfering.

Her eyes widen in surprise as her husband and this stranger went at it, watching them exchange punches, rolling around the floor, scuffing each other up.

As her heart continued to race in her chest, her breathing gets heavier and her shaking only gets worse with time as the situation plummets but she looks around the room frantically, trying to find something to help her husband. She runs for the telephone, dialling the number for police, and quickly giving them the address.

Once she slams the telephone down, she grabs a glass vase, watching as the man and her husband continue fighting, waiting for this huge bulk of a human to roll on top before smashing the glass on the back of his head, hoping and praying to dear god it would cause some damage or at least distract him enough for her husband to have the advantage.

She didn’t know what to do, what to say even as blood poured from the man’s head but it seemed to have had close to no effect, and it was probably because, in the heat of the moment, he couldn’t physically feel the pain settle in.

No matter.

He would have it coming later.

“I’ve called the police!”

Once the man realises the odds weren’t in his favour and that fighting wouldn’t resolve anything, he gets up and bolts out of the door. Danielle rushes over to her husband, bruised and bloody, and sits beside him, her face stricken with grief. Her fingers delicately trace some dried blood on the side of his lip, wincing as she did so, and though she wasn’t the one physically hurt, she was emotionally wounded; why didn’t you listen to me, stupid? Her eyes spoke words that her voice couldn’t muster as a tear slides down her cheek, bottom lip quivering when her mind begins to comprehend everything that had happened in the past thirty minutes.

“You’re so stupid,” she whispers, “so, so stupid.”

But he wasn’t, and she loved him for it, more than words could articulate.

Alesso remained resolved, inching himself closer and closer until a mere five feet rested between him and his principle target. He kept his head level, the redness in his flesh brightening giving testament to the boiling blood underneath the skin. As Danielle bit down and the man grunted in pain, Alesso took a stutter step forward as he closed the gap another foot and watched the man regain his grip on the woman. He ignored her pleas for him to leave, his eyes catching her for a brief moment before flicking back to lock with the culprit’s.

She was giving him that look. He could feel it tingle his flesh and raise goosebumps on his arms as he dared not look directly into that bright, red gaze she struck him with. He’d much rather stare into the noon-day sun. It was the look that told him you’re are obviously being a bullheaded ass. And he was. But he would not let her alone.

“Just let her go. Leave. I won’t even call the police. What? You need money?” Alesso lowered himself towards the floor, keeping his hands visible at all times as he set the flower on the floor and reached into his back pocket. His movements remained as slow as he could go. His eyes flashed red as he brought his hands around and offered the wallet to the man, in its whole. “I have enough here for you to do whatever the hell you want. Run, get out the country, I don’t care. Just let my wife go, take it, and there is the door.”

For a minute he was believable. His body language playing perfect into his ploy. The man reached for the wallet, allowing Alesso to inch closer and closer, until he was in range. When the man almost had the wallet Alesso dropped it.

The wallet dropped between them and Alesso seized the man by the wrist and from his better position, ripped the man forward. The assailant was just off his balance enough that he came forward. Alesso turned and threw his weight into a devastating elbow across the man’s jaw which sent both of them careening for the floor. Alesso put himself between the man and his wife as they tumbled to the floor.

He managed to get Danielle free, giving her a boost away before turning around just in time to catch a counter attack to the left brow. Alesso was rocked, his body turning with the blow and his body nearly falling as Alesso returned again with his own punch and soon enough the two men where tumbling over the floor, trading blows with one another like two teenagers in the street.

Her heart pounded in her chest as the man’s grip tightened and he continued to muffle her screams, her throat sore from trying despite how useless it was - the neighbours wouldn’t even be able to hear because of how thick the walls were and only god knew where Alesso was, certainly not here. Tears began to pool up in her eyes, a couple sliding down her cheek and as the large man felt the liquid on his hands, he began to slide his thumb along her cupid's bow, almost mocking her.

Alesso was silent, and if they weren’t already facing the door she would’ve been oblivious to his presence altogether, but her eyes widened as she looked at him, wide and frightened, though now she wasn’t scared for her own life, but his. The thought of anything happening to this man turned her stomach upside down and blocked her throat, unable to even entertain the idea - though he was soft, and tender to her, he had also vowed to protect her, and Italians didn’t take their vows lightly, as she had come to find out over the years. She would joke about how serious he was sometimes but his resolve seemed to unsettle the man behind her, his grip loosening slightly. Taking the opportunity, she bites down into his flesh, causing him to let go but it proves futile as he grabs her by the waist once more, his own nails digging into her skin, as payback.

She had angered him.

“Leave, my heart.”

Danielle’s voice was soft, as she gazed at him with nothing but love in her eyes, the woman was extremely overprotective when it came to her husband. Simply put, she would kill for the man.

“What do you want?”

Her next question was aimed at the man behind her, his nostrils flared now as he looked at Alesso, his gaze unwavering. Her complexion was clear and pale, dark circles surrounding her eyes, and her brows were well-defined, expressive. She narrowed her eyes at her husband, and though she didn’t speak, so many words, words that only he would understand, were exchanged in that one look.

It was a look she would often serve him when he angered her. Right now, she needed him to listen, and not be so hardheaded.

She needed him to be safe, and rational.

Business had concluded for the day and Alesso was on his long walk home through the streets of Venice Italy. The massive structures resting on nothing more than bracers above the water. Liquid lapping stone, as peaceful as the streets around him as somewhere I the distance church bells tolled the hour. Seven rings resounding off stone, reverberating in what seemed an endless cycle through the streets and canals. Alesso crossed over the water at a bridge just in time to hear the gondola pilot humming to himself as he moved towards the nearby dock to make port for the night.

Alesso beat his own tune against the rough cobblestone road. Each step thumping as boot met road one after the other. His hair swayed in the warm breeze as he held on to a single flower in one hand and a small box of Italian chocolates in his other. It had been a longer day than he had expected and he knew Danielle may be cross with him for returning so late. A promise of four and dinner had turned into a cancelation and the promise of making it up to her tonight. Tomorrow there was nothing but the flight home to their estate.

The city was beautiful. Though they never had a true chance to visit. But he missed the budding flowers of the estate and the warm days here caused Alesso some discomfort.

Alesso loosened his tie as he crossed the street in front of a passing car and unbuttoned the neck button to allow himself some breathing room. He was a block away from their apartment complex where they had called home for the last few days when it struck him like a bolt to the stomach. Something wasn’t right. He picked up speed, nearly jogging as he made it to the last corner and rounded himself into the small walkway, barely big enough to fit two abreast, and rushed for the door itself.

He hustled himself up the stairs. He cleared two at a time, sometimes three, as he released his stride and brought himself to their third story apartment. Second door on the right. And as he planted both feet on the landing he could already see the door was not closed.

He took his time, easing his way towards the frame before turning in on the scene before him. A man with his arms around his wife, her helpless form nearly collapsed in the man’s arms. Alesso stared on and locked eyes with the man, raising his own slighter as he did his best not to bear his teeth. “Just let her go, and walk out. You don’t want to do this.” He spoke in Italian first and then in English, just to make sure he translated. He inched himself closer towards where they were, leaving a partial line to the door, remaining close enough to nab him if he tried to dash with Danielle.

There was a longing in her soul. A longing to be as vital as the setting sun and as she stared out into the coral horizon, her heart contracts, fingers tightening around the metal railings surrounding the edge of the balcony.

Venice.

It wasn’t the concrete jungle she imagined it to be and though their apartment wasn’t particularly lavish, it was inviting, and warm, but most importantly, safe. Her husband had left a while ago to run some errands and Danielle found that often times when he did leave, this is what she would do in his absence. Gaze at the sky, and wait, for his return. As a soft breeze passes by, she tightens the blanket around her body, letting a soft sigh part her lips, unable to shake this inept fear in her stomach, a feeling she had been dealing with for the most part of the day. Of course, she hadn’t mentioned it to Alesso, it was probably nothing anyway and she didn’t want to worry him.

When the doorbell does finally ring, she sinks her teeth into her bottom lip, biting for just a second before running past their bedroom excitedly. She nearly trips over the chaise in the living room but manages to catch herself just in time, flinging the door open instead of asking who it was like she usually would do.

As her eyes settle on a man, quite large, with broad shoulders, her forehead creased in confusion.

He wasn’t Alesso.

“Yes?”

Nothing, he stayed absolutely silent while his eyes seemed to scan the house, and beginning to feel even more anxious about the whole ordeal, Danielle pushes the door closed slightly until she was the only thing in view, forcing him to stop investigating. When he does finally look back at her, the hairs at the nape of her neck stand, a shiver coursing through her spine. He was unsettling. From his ill-lit eyes to his clothes, even his knuckles, covered in purple bruises.

“Signore?”

Before she could even process what was going on, he slams open the door, flinging her back in the process, and because she was caught so off guard, she is unable to move for a while but when it does finally hit her, she makes a run towards the bedroom. Her little strides are no match with his however and soon enough, he grabs her by the air, muffling her screams with his hand over her mouth.

She tries punching and kicking but Danielle was small, and he was built like a machine; strong and sturdy. She whimpers helplessly, her hands beginning to shake out of fear, out of complete and utter panic.
