With every word Ayla spoke, Jasper's expression softened slightly. He hated it, but the way she stood there, tears strolling down her face, and truly vulverable, she was the most attractive he had seen her! The reds in his eyes remained strong though, despite the softening expression. He released her hands and took a step back. "You chose that stick crown over me and my Kingdom. You have to see the irony in all of this. But hey. Why not add insult to injury?"

Swirls of dark blue mixed into the red as sadness started to take the place of anger in his expression. "I love you too..." He was already walking away by the time the words escaped his lips. He did love her. He would never stop. But the past few days were proof that she wasn't right. She wasn't what he needed. Of course, he still had no idea what he needed, and there was no way he could talk to Essie about it. Of course he had thought about her. But he couldn't go there now. Not after choosing Ayla over her... He didn't return to the party. He had something else to take care of...

(You wouldn't believe how long it took me to finish this sucky post)

Ayla had barely made it halfway down the hall before Jasper caught up with her. Within his grip, she flinched as if he had slapped her when he spoke. Apparently, what she had done had not sat well with him, but she had been at the end of her rope. Bound by his hands, her hands flexed, but she did not struggle against him. Instead, she held his gaze and accepted his anger knowing that she was deserving as such. Tears fell down her cheeks and created a path down her neck until they reached her dress and then vanished from sight.

In spite of the tears, her jaw clenched in stubbornness, showing that she hated to let them show.

Angry with herself as well as Jasper and ashamed of the rashness and tears, she diverted her gaze to over his shoulder.

'Non-spoiled'?

Ayla glared at him and her chest  brushed against his as she leaned forward, eliminating the space between them.

"Getting my way? You believe I'm spoiled? I have nothing. No one. Maybe Harry could count as a friend, but that's it. I've lost my world within a few months span, a world that was already messed up," she said in an even tone despite her anger. "I admit what I did was uncalled for and I apologize for embarrassing you and hurting you. I had nothing to lose, because the only thing I had left, I never really had, but I lost it and that was you. The kingdom is not about you or Essie. She will be fine, but I won't. Essie will still be a princess and I refuse to return to being what I've always been, a queen of the forest with a stick crown."

She pulled her hands down in one hard tug. Shaking, she held his gaze.

"I never wanted the crown because I knew that kind of woman, the one who was a despised mistake and head of a clan of criminals and outcasts, could never live up to their expectations. I knew you deserved more than that- than this," she waved her hands over herself. "Damn it, Jasper, I had to try."

She looked at him; really looked at him. It was already too late, she realized. Her escapade had only sealed his decision.

The knowledge drove her over the edge. She ran her hand through her hair as her lips trembled and her breath hitched. More tears continued to fall as she shook her head.

"I'm so angry, Jasper, so angry and hurt. I never meant for this..."

Her sentence trailed as she realized that she was falling apart while Jasper was still angry. But she couldn't help it. She tried to wipe the tears away, but even more replaced them. Taking a deep breath, she worked on calming herself, but failed. Ayla's shoulders rose and fell as she sobbed, but she hid her face in her hands.

All of the pent up grief exposed itself, like a dam bursting open. She didn't have enough gall to reach out to him for comfort, that would be idiotic. Finally, she reached a point where she mustered up enough strength to stop crying and steady herself.

"I am sorry and I love you."

She then turned away from him, knowing that she had a limited time until she broke again.

The coronation was going extremely smoothly. No mix ups, no crashers no assassination attempts. It was almost as if Jasper were going to have a nice, unbothered event! And then Ayla appeared to speak up to the party. Jasper thought she intended to declare well wishes to the new King, despite their recent breakup. Boy was he wrong...It would appear her intention was to leave his Kingdom in disarray, as well as to eliminate any chances of the two Kingdoms ever joining together. Of course, who would inherit Mybville was far more complicated than Ayla simply "accepting" her birthright at this point, nonetheless, who would have known Ayla could be so vindictive!

The elders were already on the move by the time she finished her statement. They were on the stage, attempting to do damage control. The eldest among them spoke up on behalf of them. "We apologize for the interruption everyone. The Princess has made quite a bold claim. But we assure you there is no validity to it at all. Isn't that right my Ki-" He turned toward the Throne to see that Jasper was no longer seated in it! A quick survey of the room would confirm that he was no longer present!

He was in the hallway, powerwalking to chase down Ayla. They were just out of earshot of the chaos she had created when he caught her by the wrist. He raised it up and pulled her back toward him, grabbing her other wrist and pushing her against the wall by both wrists. "What the hell was that?" Nobody made Jasper's eyes change colors like Ayla lately. Bet you can guess what color they were. "Is this how you react to not getting your way? And here I thought you were the non-spoiled one!" He was fuming. Not even just because she lied, but because it seemed to be a direct attack against Essie as well! And she wasn't even involved! Crimson eyes looked directly through her own, searching for some sort of explanation for her behavior.

The people applauded as a ripple of excited shouts went through the crowd. Essie stood on the edge of the room watching her friend, her king, take a seat on the throne.

A priest stepped in front of Jasper, blocking her view, and placed a golden crown adorned in sapphires on his head. Then, he gave him a matching scepter and stepped away so that all could see. The priest began reciting a prayer, drawing everyone to respectful silence, and then he bowed before the king. Everyone followed suit, including Essie who was smiling from ear to ear. She hoped he felt their excitement and love for him as well as see their loyalty written in their faces.

Normally, a king would have to swear on God to protect his kingdom and his birthright as king. But, his kingship had already been established the day he fought against his mother and protected those within the land. The priest rose then did everyone else. All at once everyone gave a final cheer, bathing their king with adoration.

After all was settled, music would begin to play and the place was immersed in deafening chatter. Many flocked to where the king sat, hoping to get a few words in with him before someone else could.

Essie saw her opportunity and began to weave in and out of the crowd towards Jasper. She did not know where they stood, but she was at least going to reveal herself to him as the one responsible for his coronation. Hopefully, it would jumpstart things and maybe their friendship could start to flourish once again.

Before she could make it half way across the room, she noticed Ayla making her way to the front of the room. Essie frowned and halted, waiting to see what she was going to do.

Ayla stood in front of the steps to the side of Jasper's throne and looked up at him. Her red dress was tight against her curves and a bit on the revealing side with an exaggerated neck line.

She gave him a look as to draw his attention then faced the crowd. Then, the royal announcer beat his staff against the floor, drawing the festivities to a pause. Once every eye was on her, she straightened her spine.

"I have made the decision to honor my birthright and accept the crown over Princess Essie's kingdom. Now as queen, I want to humbly thank King Jasper for his hardwork and pray blessings over his reign. I would also like to announce that I've excepted his proposal for marriage and I hope we can help our kingdom thrive together."

The room errupted in applause and confused murmurings as she took her leave, not bothering to check Jasper's reaction.

Essie could hardly breathe, but she managed to clap. Her eyes were glossy as she turned around and headed for the drink table. The glass of wine she had poured herself only lasted a few seconds on her lips before she had completely drained it.

As she poured herself another one, a few lords and their ladies came up beside her and started speaking about the crown to her. With grace she slowly sipped on the wine in front of them, even though she wanted to down it, and kept a polite smile plastered to her lips.

If only she could escape everyone and crawl into her bed...

Jasper couldn't help but feel it a bit silly for him to have a coronation now. It had been a few months since he took his father's crown. It seemed almost like the Royals just needed something to do. Nonetheless, it made him feel good that those in the castle had thought enough of him to throw him an official coronation, though he was still unsure who had organized the whole thing. Perhaps now he would be able to sit on his father's throne without hesitation. Dressed in a new suit that had been delivered to his door, he prepared to head out. He thought he had heard his escort outside his door, but when he stepped outside his room, he found that the halls were empty. No matter. He would just make his appearance alone. Just as the clock was striking, An announcer would be calling Jasper's name, and he would step before the crowd, to witness hundreds of subjects, happily cheering for their King. It was a feeling Jasper never accepted. His Kingdom actually cared for him. They approved of him as their King, and he loved them for that. He could only hope and pray that he would hold their approval and admiration over his years as King. He didn't know what was planned for the event, but he waved to the crowd, and took a seat on the throne, waiting for things to get started.

The few days that followed her lunch outing with Walter, her mood had lifted considerably. She had spent her time planning a surprise coronation for Jasper which made her feel useful and excited. He remained distant, always swamped in his studies without coming to dinner. And Ayla was no where to be seen.

The gloom that preyed upon the residents within the castle should have bothered her, but it didn't. It only made her buoyant to know that she had the ability to help lift the curse over them.

As maids and servants tended to the throne room, she arranged the flowers while her thoughts swayed to Walter. She smiled to herself and hummed an old hymnal as she continued to daydream.

"-at is what he said," insisted Tommy, the doorman as he lifted a chair up onto the table pushed against cream colored walls. "He said he saw Jasper with Ayla three days ago - " she rolled her eyes. "-then she stormed out mumbling stuff. But, Jasper was indeed firm with her."

Essie frowned and stopped fiddling with the bouquet and inclined her ear.

"So, then, it's over? Just like that?" the maid listening asked, appalled by the idea of the king's breakup.

"Aye," he replied, shaking his head.

"Well now Essie can marry him and everything can go back to the way it was meant-... "

Essie tuned them out and hastened out of the room. Her heart thudded like a hundred horses' hooves within her chest as she made it to a small hiding corner within a sharp corner of the walls. Jasper had not mentioned any of this to her. Probably because he did not find the need to.

This thought hurt to swallow, but it was still a possibility. She shook her head.

Although she didn't know what happened, she was elated to hear that maybe Jasper was finally coming around. That maybe he was available again...

She smiled and sighed.

-

The night was adorned in yellow lights from lanterns hanging on hooks around the castle. By now, Jasper had been fully informed of the event planned for him, just not by whom.

Many people had arrived and all were dressed in extravagant apparel as to outshine each other. One by one, they all took a seat, awaiting for their king to arrive.

Essie waited in the halls outside his door in a midnight blue dress with an intricate golden pattern etched along the skirt. She tugged at her gloves nervously, hoping he would be pleased to hear that it had been her surprise to him. He deserved this.

"Essie."

She turned a half a step, following the sound of the voice until it lead to a plump maid with reddened cheeks.

"We need your assistance in the kitchen immediately," she explained in exasperation.

Essie frowned and glanced back at Jasper's door before agreeing to go with the maid.

She would just have to see him later.

Her apology was sincere. Even Jasper could tell that, and it caused the expression on his face to soften. However, even now, in what could be her last opportunity to truly express herself, Ayla refused to be vulnerable. That was the most important thing to her, it seemed. And if that was the case, she couldn't be his wife, regardless of how he felt for her. In his heart, he was fighting this realization, but on the surface he appeared more than calm. Somber blue eyes watched in silence, waiting for a reply that would prove him wrong, but it never came. In the end, she spoke only a few words, and then left...

Perhaps one day Ayla would grow up, and learn that she needed to look out for more than just her pride. If she could do that, then maybe the two of them could have a future. But for now, this would be the end. Twenty minutes, and he hadn't moved, hadn't even bothered to pick up the pen he was previously keeping warm. Eventually, he gave up, and returned to his room; The room that would no longer have Ayla as an expected guest...

Ayla straightened slightly in her seat as her gaze fixated on him unwavering. The turn in his demeanor hardened her expression, but otherwise it did not phase her. Having realized how out of line she had been to ask him such a thing, she stayed silent and allowed him to speak. His question forced her gaze down and ensnared her with guilt.

Her gut reaction was to retract and retaliate with a smart reply, but she failed to muster up enough will to do so.

"I am sorry," she said, softly. "I was out of line."

She glanced back up.  Ayla tried hard to hold onto the last thread of dignity that still remained and leaned forward. There was a notable difference in the color of his eyes, making it extremely difficult to behold him.

Then, she looked back down, shielding her face from him as she murmured, "I tried."

When her eyes met his again they were glossy, but she desperately tried maintain her hold on the last thread of dignity she had left.

"I wanted you. I just..."

There was nothing left to say that she had not already said, but she felt compelled to at least try. She took a breath to steady herself and shook her head.

"Please?"

It was impossible now and she knew it. He would not forgive her. Without waiting for his denial, she stood. She wanted to tell him so many things and try explaining her side, but that was not what he needed.

"I want you to be happy, even if I am not the one making you happy. Jasper, I messed up, but I was hurt. Now, I'm done grieving. I will never give up."

The last remark had drained away her sorrow and left a cold chill hanging in the air. She did not wait for him to dismiss her, she left on her own, hoping against the odds that there was still something within him that still wanted her.

Jasper's eyes were brown. They were almost always brown lately. It was like a default; lacking the brilliance and mystery they had held in days past. Jasper didn't have the luxury of time to explore his emotions. Nor was it granted to him by either of the women fate had brought into his life. So his eyes reflected his life; Businesslike.

They showed a hint of color, however, when Ayla asked him what no who he wanted. The color was a deep red. It rose across his iris like steam rising within the room, and reflected an anger that Ayla's retraction was far too late to quell. "You know what I want Ayla!" His voice had risen, but it wasn't to the point of yelling. "I -told- you what I wanted! I wanted you!"

He took a deep breath and lowered his voice once more. But his lowered voice wasn't any more soothing. In fact one might have found it even more disconcerting. It was cold, and dark, and it was accompanied by pitch black eyes that bore into the soul in the worst possible way. "But you didn't want what I wanted. You wanted to be with your men. So now I have a question for you, Ayla. Why aren't you with your men? They're who you chose, right?" His hands folded on top of each other on his desk as a face of stone stared at his visitor, awaiting her response.

Ayla did not appear hesitant, but her movements were slow and methodical as she crossed the room and sat in front of his desk in the chair provided to guests. She glanced down at his folded hands and her smirk had grown by the time she looked back up into his eyes.

It was easy to sit in a private room with him when it should have been awkward. It was easy to feign a smile while seeing him so relaxed. It was easy to watch him act as though she was another one of his subjects seeking answers or a favor.

"I want to ask a few questions," she said matter-of-factly as she crossed her legs beneath her dress. "Like, what you want."

There was more; so much more that her first request came out quickly as she struggled to find a go starting point. She felt fidgety, uneasy, and above all, hurt. Still, she remained sitting as she chewed on these emotions silently. Having not thought of what she was going to say or why she even felt compelled to visit him, she was left at a disadvantage. All of this, including the acting, was in fact no easy.

So, she extinguished the mask and let the smirk fall away and her shoulders slump forward, not in defeat, but exhaustion from the inner chaos.

"Who you want," she corrected, softly and more gently than what she felt.

She knew what he might think: what right did she have barging in demanding answers after avoiding him and pushing him away. With that thought, she realized that she was not sure she wanted to know, making her believe she would have been better off just going with her original plan and leaving.

"No, I don't want to know," she admitted, looking away. Where was her unyielding confidence? It was buried along with those she had lost.

She leaned back in her chair and stared at the wall over his shoulder.

"I'm sorry. I can't imagine what you went through because of my selfishness. I was hurting, but so were you and it was partly because of me. You touched places within me that I still was not ready to let anyone into and because of that, I let you down."

Her eyes shone, but no tears fell. Ayla was not going to allow her emotions to get tossed in the spotlight now.

She forced herself to look back at him, but just as quickly as she did, she looked down, unable to stand the shame and pain she felt, that might be mirrored in his expression.

"Jasper..." her sentenced trailed as she shrugged, uncertain of what to say at this point.

Yet another day spent in his office, Jasper had grown quite accustomed to spending most of his time there. Today, however, he was getting very little work done. He was too busy thinking of the dark cloud that seemed to have descended upon the palace. It was obvious that both Ayla and Essie were avoiding him, as well as each other. There were several instances where he had caught glimpses of Ayla, and she switched directions in order to avoid crossing paths with him.

He had seen Essie only in business meetings. Her mood seemed a bit brighter the past few days, but she didn't seem much more interested in speaking with him than Ayla. She seemed almost... secretive. Busy, even when there should have been nothing to do. It bothered Jasper. But he never spoke on it. He simply went on about his business. Until today, their avoidance of him had given him time to be much more productive. The men and women who had been guests in the castle were now safely back in their own homes, and his approval ratings as King were impressive for one so young.  Nonetheless, he grew exhausted from the heavy energy that surrounded him. He decided perhaps he should call a meeting... Just then, the door knocked, and in peeped Ayla.

That was good for her, he supposed. Normally she would just bust the door open and walk in without any regard for him or his space. Or at least, she would have, when she was speaking to him. "Come in." He said, placing the pen that hadn't written a word in hours down on his desk. He eyed the tattered clothes she was wearing. They reminded him of the world she came from; The world she had made him clear he intended to return to... He folded his hands atop the desk and looked the woman in the eye. "What can I do for you.?"

Essie laughed at his antics. A blush had managed to sneak its way across the high arches of her cheekbones. The woman was astonished at how little she knew of him despite having known him practically her entire life.

She leaned forward and folded her hands on the table in front of her, sighing. With her eyes on him, she continued to smile in thoughtful silence. When she realized she was staring, she blinked and looked down, pretending to rearrange the skirt of her dress on her lap.

The smile vanished almost instantly as she said, "I think it's time to go. Jasper may be wondering where I ran off to."

Although, she doubted that was the case.

-

Harry returned the smile with a fraction of a nod. Upon hearing the toast, he raised his cup and replied 'aye '.

The thought of a brighter future was pleasant, though for now they had to settle for dark days and darker nights.

-

Ayla woke up headache threatening to tear her head in half. Apparently, her drunken self still had yet to learn to drink as much water as alcohol. Taking a moment to allow the room to stop spinning, she hesitated before getting out of bed.

After Jasper had saved her from hitting her head, she had made every effort possible to avoid him and drown herself in wine. She had been successful in avoiding him and Essie, making her wonder if they were all following an unspoken agreement to stay clear of one another.

Just then, a knock answered the question.

"Ayla?"

Essie's voice made her frown and groan. What in the world could she possibly need from her? A congradulations on getting everything she was deprived of? She no longer cared how childish she was being in allowing herself to be bitter.

After a moment, Essie came in and their eyes met. Ayla raised her brows, waiting to hear what she had to say.

"I'm planning a party for Jasper," she explained, wringing her hands as she stood by the door. "I was wondering if you wanted to help."

"No."

Essie sighed and nodded. "Fine. Will you come?"

Ayla scoffed. "Why should I come? Will there be alcohol?"

Her sister frowned and shook her head then turned to leave. Pushing herself forward, she forced herself onto her feet and out of her bed as Essie stalled and looked over her shoulder.

"It's tonight, if you change your mind," she said, then walked out.

-

Finding Jasper was like trying to find a skittish cat within an entire castle. Ayla finally tried his study after looking in his bedroom and the throne room. She knocked, but it was more so an announcement of her coming in rather than an inquiry for entrance. The gown she wore was tattered, clearly one she had worn outside the castle. By the shredded skirt and long strings that hung off the arms, it was possible she even wore it to battle a few times.

Regardless of the attire, she still radiated beauty and grace. And in its original place across her crimson lips, was the smirk that emitted confidence as well as mischief.

"Jasper?"

She projected her voice into the room as slender fingers **** open the door. Instead of letting the door swing completely open, her hand held it a foot from the doorframe as she peeked her head around to investigate the room.

Brown colored brows furrowed in response to Essie's laughter. He couldn't tell what it was she found funny, but based on her reaction, he could assume it wasn't that she was laughing at the idea of him being a good king. More importantly, she seemed satisfied by his answer, since she changed the subject,  which meant he didn't have to let that information out. When she asked her question, he looked around, as if to survey how many people might be listening in on their conversation. Then, he gestured with a finger for Essie to come closer so he could whisper in her ear. He cupped his mouth with his hand to block off the visual from anyone who may have been watching, then once his lips were close to her ear.... He kissed her cheek! "One more than I kissed yesterday." He said with a laugh, before leaning back in his chair with a satisfied grin. There were some things, Essie just didn't need to know...

--------------------------------------------------

Last time Harry tore into Jasper, he objected. This time, he remained silent. Not really looking at Harry, but not looking away either. It was as if he were somewhere in his head, considering the man's words. It wasn't that he didn't have any objections. He inherited the Kingdom at least ten years before he expected, of course he wasn't ready! He had chosen Ayla! but she chose her men over Jasper. She decided that a life with him wasn't for her. If her heart was broken, he could easily claim the same. But he didn't speak any of this to Harry, not because he feared his response, but because he didn't feel worthy to defend himself. Not after allowing Ayla and his unborn child to come under harm...

He expected that to be the end, so he was surprised by the old man's next words, which caused him to lookup and catch the man's eye. He offered a light smile, and poured himself a cup of whiskey. "Thanks..." His voice was low, and far from joyful, but his appreciation was sincere. He held up his cup toward the man. "To a brighter future than past." He said. He didn't know what that would mean specifically in his life. But he knew things would have to change for the better eventually.

Essie straightened in her chair. He was right; she shouldn't let everything discourage her, but it was easier said than done.

Her fingertips ran across the table in front of her. The groves of the wood were smooth against them. Idly, they retracted into get palms as she sighed. As usual, her thoughts were on Jasper and the kingdom; but mainly Jasper. It dawned on her that he had yet to have a coronation celebration. Perhaps, she should plan one as a surprise.

When he brought up the idea of being king, she took notice of how quick he was to look away as if somewhat abashed. A small laugh passed her lips, which she stifled quickly to avoid making him think that the idea itself was humorous. Actually, him being king was far from crazy, but she had presumed it was merely a way to ensure a secure financial future. She found it funny just how little she knew. Essie nodded, causing her hair to fall in front of her eyes momentarily before a decisive flicker of her hand whisked it off of her forehead.

"I tend to agree," she said.

After she had finished her treat, she folded her arms and leaned back in the chair. "I just wasn't aware that you were all that interested in politics. I always took your silence as indifference, though I know now that wasn't the case."

Essie frowned in contemplation then smiled at him. Walt differed from her usual company which wasn't a bad thing. He knew when to stay silent and only spoke if it suited him rather than letting his tongue ensnare him in a trap. It was a trait those who held depth and wisdom had. Also, it meant that he was perhaps too serious at times for his own good. Testing her theory, she leaned forward and placed her chin in an open palm as she looked up at him through thick lashes.

"Walt, how many females have you kissed?"

-

He drew a heavy sigh as Ayla was caught up by Jasper before her head could become the table's new ornament. Harry poured him self another cup of liquor then looked quizzically at Jasper. It wasn't like him to become unraveled under stress. Then again, it wasn't like Ayla either, but none of what these poor kids were going through was normal.

He raised his catepillars for eyebrows and nodded silently to himself.

"Ah, alrigh', lad," he agreed, taking the seat indicated by Jasper. "Ye are a spoiled palace brat who knows nothin' of Ayla's life, but you assume all the girl wants is your bed so ye have no problem givin' it to her until emotions come up between the pillows. Ye are king fer a reason and ye couldn't even protect a lass yet everyone is suppose ta' trust ye with a kingdom? Ye broke her heart but all ye will say is that ye didn't mean to and ye didn't know she fell for ye even though ye were aware of how damaged she was. An ' I suppose ye are still unsure if ye are goin' to go with her or Essie, which is despicable."

Harry watched him carefully, gauging his expression with each word that came out like a dagger. Then, he retracted his stance and took another chug of his whiskey, allowing Jasper to say his peace. Once or if he had, the man shook his head.

"Now, what I was goin ' to say before you assumed the worse in this old man is that I'm sorry for ye loss," he said, gently. "I loss' me daughter and sons so I know how it feels to an extent. Which is why I am protective of Ayla. But, she is a woman and she makes her own choices. Jasper, ye have great potential and ye are a great king. Don' lose yourself in this tragedy. I know ye will do well so don't be so hard on yourself."

The man tilted his head and glanced at Ayla. He wished she would muster up enough courage to rise out of the ashes she had been sinking in since her fiance's death. Also, he feared of what would happen if Jasper decided to choose Essie instead of her.

Since Walter hadn't expected Essie to respond to his lecture, he was quite surprised by her sudden rant. He understood how she felt, to an extent, but he couldn't say he agreed with everything she had to say. She was right. She needed to be certain of who she was, before she could be ideal to someone. But something told Walter that Essie had no idea how ideal she already was for Jasper. If anything it would be her who needed to mold him! He could also understand her desire to be pursued, but if she let that get in the way of what she wanted... No matter. It was her life to live and he shouldn't interject any more than he already had. He smiled and nodded his head. "Don't let all of this get you discouraged. Jasper needs you. This Kingdom needs you..."

His eyes widened slightly when Essie asked what -he- wanted to do. No one had ever asked him that. His parents told him from a young age that he would be a King one day and that was just the way it had always been. but in an ideal situation, he would remain as Jasper's chief advisor, or something like that! He honestly didn't want the responsibilities of ruling a Kingdom! He couldn't say that out loud though. If the words made it out into the world, he could never take them back. "I don't know." He responded. "I think I'm well suited to be a King..." He let the subject drop, looking down at the remains of his ice cream. It was nearly melted at this point. He looked up to find that Essie seemed to really be enjoying herself. He hated to take her back to stressing herself out in the palace, but she would surely request to be returned soon. For now though, he would let her enjoy her time out.

------------------------------------------------

Jasper stood his face against the wall long after the guard took Simon away. Tears streamed down his face as he realized he was quickly driving both Essie and Ayla to hate him. With his parents gone, they were all he had left. Maybe with him as a common enemy, they could learn to get along with each other! Then at least something good would come of it! After a quick trip to the dungeon, he went to the dining hall. His body was robbed of nutrients needed to maintain his strength, but no matter how long he sat in front of his plate, he couldn't eat a bite! Eventually, he gave up, and headed out to the courtyard, where he saw Ayla conversing with Harry. He couldn't make out what they were saying, but it was clear that Ayla was drunk...She was wobbling, clearly about to topple... He made it just in time to prevent her head from hitting the table, and barely managed to move her body to a nearby long chair (picture a stone beach chair with pillows.) and lay her on it before cold eyes turned to Harry.

Every interaction they had ever had told Jasper that Harry hated him. Despite that, he didn't hate Harry in return. He simply hated how the man seemed to have known everything before it happened! He hated how he read him! IT was all so frustrating! But now, even those feelings were numb. "Gonna lecture me too?" Jasper asked, his tone more distant than apprehensive. He took a seat in the chair that Ayla was previously seated in, and gestured to the next chair. "Let's have it..."

The attempt to dodge the invasive inquiry of how she was fairing had been futile. It backfired even, making her sigh and look down at the pastry in her hand. She sensed that he didn't expect her to reply, but she insisted on doing so anyways.

"I am fulfilling my duties as a queen while giving Jasper his space. I love him," she said bluntly, looking up to catch Walter's expression. "But I understand that he is torn and the events that have taken place have altered us. We are both being pulled two different ways and although it hurts, I cannot deny myself. I want to be desired more than just because I am a valuable asset to a throne."

She shook her head and tucked her hair behind her ear. "No, it won't all work out by itself. No, it may not turn out that I'm the one he really wants; that can truly satisfy him. But, I need to find myself before I choose to marry anyone. Otherwise, I'm afraid I'll just mold myself to their perfect idea of who they believe I should be, rather than knowing who I am and finding someone who would accept it. My withdrawal is not surrender. When I'm sure I can be better for Jasper than Ayla," she glanced down. "When I know I can give him more than a queen, I will try. But, I deserve to be pursued too."

Realizing how rashly she had spoken, she glanced up to weigh his expression. Jasper was his friend afterall and she hated to drag him into their personal matters since it placed him an awkward position. It wasn't that she didn't desire Jasper or believe he was the only one who could ever truly make her happy, but she had gone her entire life trying to win over the approval of others and she never pictured herself doing that for the man she was to marry. Although she didn't expect it to be easy, she didn't expect it to take away from who she wanted to be. With Jasper lately, she found who she wanted to be slowly shrinking inside.

When the subject turned to Walter's thoughts, she tilted her head in thought.

"It isn't a question of whether or not you are suited to be a king or husband. You are. You have all of the capability in the world. So does everyone. That doesn't mean they would be good for the job, but you will be," she said with a gentle smile spreading warmth to her hazel eyes. "Is that really what you want to do?"

The question wasn't to tear him down, but she wanted to know if he really wanted that or he was trying to secure a dowry. There was no shame in it, many people did it, but he hardly seemed like he was excited at the idea of a title and marriage. Taking another, and rather large bite, of her pastry, Essie placed her elbows on the countertop as she ate. The ability to disregard table manners stirred up emotions of excitement as well as mischief. It felt so good, she had to fight to contain a giggle from surfacing.

-

Ayla was drunk. She could tell by the presence of three little dancing piggies at the edge of the treeline. They made her giggle with their silly dance routine that was perhaps the best she had ever seen. She almost didn't hear Harry come up.

Harry placed a hand on her shoulder. "Lass, I'm sorry to hear about the babe."

Ayla hiccupped. "Yes, well, you-..." she pointed at him and accidentally jabbed him in the eye with her index finger; or was it her thumb? "- are interrupting the p-pigs."

He frowned and looked around. "Ayla, I think you have had enough to drink."

The pigs stopped dancing to her dismay and shook their heads at his question. Yes, the dancing pigs were right, he was definitely wrong.

"Go away, Harry. I don't n-need you to tell me..." Blasted! She forgot what he was going to tell her! Oh well, she ignored him as the pigs started up their dancing again. The middle did flips which she encouraged with a yell of excitement. Harry didn't appear to be as pleased with their performance. He looked almost scared. Poor Harry, didn't he know that they needed love too?

"Did you leave Jasper?" he asked, probing her like a child.

She groaned and slammed the cup of whiskey on the table in front of her, splashing liquor onto her dress sleeves as she did. "He's fine, Harry!"

"Is he? You are his lover, you need to go console him."

She rolled her eyes, or so she thought, but everything was already spinning. "J-jasper-er is not my lover. He wanted the babe. Not me. He even asked m-me to stay after he found out I was pregnant."

Harry nodded his head. "Sounds like a good man. I wouldn't choose a child who doesn't know what she wants either."

Ayla glared up at his three heads. Three heads? That didn't seem right. Did he know he had three heads? Someone should tell him. "Go away."

"You're angry because you fell in love with him."

The piggies stopped dancing again and stared at her, jaws ajar.

"That's silly-..."

" -exactly," he interrupted. "You can't even let someone love you because you're afraid they will be taken from you."

Ayla stood, well tried to but the wooden slabs at her feet seemed to have conspired to do whatever it took to throw her of her feet. She steadied herself by placing a hand against the table as she faced him.

"If he loved me-..."

"How can he when you haven't given him the chance?"

Damn that old man! The piggies were no where to be seen and he saw right through her.

"Go away," she ordered, her voice sharp as a blade's tip.

Harry frowned. "You claim to be strong, but you can't even face death sober."

She wanted to object and even planned to, but the world suddenly faded into utter darkness.

Walter sighed, as he leaned back in his chair, eating a scoop of his strawberry Ice Cream. He shook his head as he looked over at the counter, and then back to his companion. She was a real beauty. But in many ways, like Jasper, and like himself, still a child. "No Essie. It won't 'work out.'" He leaned forward, and rested his forearms on the table. "Things don't just work out. You have to put time, effort and energy into making them work out. What are you doing to make things better for yourself?"

It was a rhetorical question, intended to make her really consider her part in all of this. Was it a part she chose, and actively acted on, or was it a part she allowed herself to be placed in? Or did she want a part in all of it at all?

He didn't press the matter any longer, returning to his ice cream, and looking out at the brilliant blue sky. It'll be two months before I get another opportunity to be considered as a suitor. But honestly, I'm starting to wonder if I'm suited to be a King. Or a husband for that matter. I've been turned away six times now, just for the trial period. Being chosen doesn't even guarantee you'll marry the Princess. It only gives you the chance to live in the palace under observation, to see if you would be a worthy partner for the future Queen of the Kingdom in question. I can't even make it that far..."

Walter didn't talk to Jasper about these things. It wasn't because he didn't feel he would laugh at him. Honestly, he didn't know why. He just never felt that it was something he should bring up. He didn't know why he spoke of it to Essie, but it was in the air now. No taking it back....

------------------------------------------------------

Jasper stood in cold anger as Simon stammered. He was silently deciding what he would do to the man when he suddenly regained his barrings, and spoke with the Gall of a royal! "You are blind! You are throwing this kingdom away for a who-" Jasper's open palm Had already grabbed the man by the face, and slammed his head in to the wall before he could finish getting the words out. He leaned downward, and whispered in the shorter man's ear. "I promise, you'll never finish speaking those words..." He began a foreign incantation, that caused his own skin to turn pale, as his body was robbed of valuable nutrients. At the same time, however, Simon was robbed of his voice. He tried to object, but no sound came from his voice box. Eyes widened, he attempted to scream, but the room was once again greeted with silence.

Two guards came to the door after hearing the loud sound. "Is everything alright, your highness?" Jasper released the Elder. "Take him to the dungeon. His sentence will be declared soon." the guards obeyed, and Jasper turned to comfort a pained Ayla, only to find that she had already left. He released a heavy sigh. it was no surprise she didn't want to speak to him. After all, he had now caused her to suffer the pain of losing Robin all over again. Why couldn't he ever get anything right?"

All too often, Essie took small things like getting the door opened for her for granted. When Walt did it, it reminded her of how spoiled she truly was. Yet, him doing it didn't make her feel like a princess; not in the least.

Essie thanked Walt before climbing up into the carriage. His next few comments were answered by a guilty look that she tried to cover up with a fraction of a smile. Although she knew that he was right, she couldn't shake the shame she felt for leaving the castle. Hadn't she been the one to get upset with Jasper for staying out all night? Well, she wasn't staying out all night at least, just for an hour or so to regain some of her sanity.

"I am happy as well," she said a moment after coming to the conclusion that it would not hurt to get out for a bit. "Thank you for the invitation."

Essie looked over the village as well as the countryside with a smile that was growing with every passing second.

"Wherever is fine," she said, turning to look at him. "I trust you."

His next question erased her smile instantly and an invisible weight it carried with it pressed her shoulders down.

"No," she replied, her voice distant as she looked at the horses in their front. It made her uncomfortable to give him the honest response, but it was true. "But," she sighed. "It will work out."

She hoped it would sooner than later though...

-

Ayla looked up in surprise as Jasper entered and quickly cut the elder off. Simon looked just as shocked. He quickly stood up and looked at Ayla then back at Jasper.

"Your majesty," he stammered. "I was j-just... Well, we were just..."

The elder stopped and swallowed as fear turned into anger. With nothing holding him back anymore, he pointed a finger at the king.

"You are blind! You are throwing this kingdom away for a ****!" the elder bellowed, his pale face turning an unpleasant shade of dark red. "If I hadn't rid us of the spawn, think of what could have become of us all! I have invested too much into this kingdom to have you take it from me!"

Ayla shook her head. "Your attempt was unsuccessful though. The doctor said all was fine."

However, if the doctor had been truthful, why would Jasper be so angry? Ayla looked down and tried to grasp what it all added up to.

She couldn't believe that she had lost the baby, not after just losing her first born. Her eyes then fixated on the other man in the room knowing full well that she could take his life at the snap of her fingers, but she didn't care to have blood on her hands. Instead, she allowed Jasper to do as he wished with the man, no longer caring what transpired from there.

Without another word, she left the room and sought solitude.

Essie was just the way Walter remembered her; Sweet, and just a little bit too proper. It was fine though. He liked that about her, even though it was the very reason he never attempted to become close friends with her, as he had with Jasper. He saw the excitement in her eyes when he welcomed her to come out with him, but in classic Essie fashion, she declined, in order to stay behind and take care of her duties. In response, he shrugged. “Alright then…” He turned back toward the door, and began on his way. He had just reached the archway, when he heard Essie change her mind. He didn’t know why, but his heart pounded in his chest, just once, when he heard that she was coming along. Walter loved his best friend, but it would be nice to have some company other than Jasper for once.  He waited at the door for her to catch up, and then turned out the door.

When they arrived at his carriage, he allowed the lady to enter first. When he was younger, he forgot chivalrous acts such as that, but time (and Jasper) had taught him better manners. “I’m glad you decided to come along.” He said, the carriage taking off into town. “You’ll drive yourself crazy cooping yourself up like that.” He would have said the same to Jasper, had he been present. It seemed like he was always in that office, trapped under the weight of ten ton papers that threatened to suffocate him.

The sound of the horses hooves trotting against the paved road was rhythmic. It was that sound that instructed Walter on where to go. When to turn was dictated by the amount of time he had heard that rhythm; a habit he picked up before he even learned to drive the carriage himself. The sun was high in the sky, bringing with it the kind of searing heat that made the air above the pavement ahead appear distorted When had Summer arrived? Walter couldn’t recall. But it was the motivation for his next move. “What do you say to a trip to the creamery?” He asked.  Should Essie agree, Walter would take the next right, and head down the hill to the Southhouse Creamery, where Martha made the best Frozen treats in all of the Kingdom! No one knew how she did it, but she could make THREE different flavors! It was perfect for a hot day like this. Once they got their treats, they could take a seat, where concerned eyes would settle on the Princess, paired with a very simple, and yet extremely complicated  question. “Are you alright?”

Jasper had been working in silence for hours. It was almost as if he was in a trance, until his door was opened. Solid brown eyes looked up to see the Doctor there, which immediately brought worry to his face. He started to speak up, but was quickly silenced by the woman, who was acting a bit strange. She started to write what she had to say on paper, and he waited to read what it said. He expected it to involve Ayla, however, when he read the note, his eyes grew cloudy  and black. For a moment, he couldn’t respond. He couldn’t move. One might have expected he would feel relief, the burden of a child out of wedlock potentially locking him to Ayla being removed. But that was his offspring! And Ayla was… Well, he didn’t know what she was. But he did know that he cared about her!

He snapped out of his mind and looked at the doctor before taking the pen. The note asked if Ayla had any enemies. The most obvious one was Essie. But Jasper wasn’t fool enough to suspect her. The way they avoided each other, Essie would never have the opportunity to poison Ayla, let alone the gall! He had considered the possibility that she had murdered his father before. He wouldn’t give her that lack of faith again… Instead, he wrote his own question. “How is Ayla?”

The returned note was a relief: Mild poison. Harmless to Majesty

He breathed a sigh of relief before asking one final question.

Who’s with her?

Simon.

One black eye turned to red, and Jasper rose from his seat. He tossed the paper in the fireplace on the way out the door, and headed to the Infirmary, where he could hear their voices.

“You said when he returned, he had a meeting?”
“Yes… He does.”

“Actually, I’ve cancelled the rest of my meetings for today.” Jasper said as he walked around the corner. One black, and one red eye settled on a tray with two tea cups, and everything added up in moments. “As well as all of yours, Simon.”

The doctor had come and gone, leaving Ayla alone tucked beneath a blanket on her bed. She had no idea what was happening, but the doctor had assured her all was fine. Nothing felt fine.

What made it worse was that the elder was still in the room and watching her like a hawk. When she had asked him to find Jasper, he had told her to rest and not to bother the king while he was busy working.

Ayla was frustrated, but she didn't know what else to do other than simply lay there and drink the blasted tea the elder continued to supply her with.

As minutes had rolled into hours, she became impatient and began to fidget.

"Is Jasper still in town?" she asked the elder. About an hour earlier he had said the king had ventured out to speak with villagers about repairs.

He simply nodded and yawned, seated in a chair across the room with the scroll he had been reviewing in his hand.

Ayla couldn't shake the feeling of unease. Normally, she was a good judge of character, but she couldn't help but wonder if the elder was keeping her here for a different reason other than her safety...

No, that was nonsense. She was being paranoid.

She winced as another waved of pain went through her. From the chair, the elder watched her.

"Drink some more tea, Ayla, it will soothe you," he insisted.

She sighed and nodded before obeying him. Leaning her head back in the pillow, she stared up at the ceiling wishing that Jasper was with her.

"Why did you say he had to go to the bakery again?" she asked, unable to shake the paranoia.

The elder hesitated. "To discuss next week's event."

But, Ayla knew the elder hadn't spoken once about the bakery. "Oh, yes. Then you said when he returned he has a meeting?"

Looking even now puzzled, the elder nodded. "Yes... He does."

Ayla closed her eyes. She knew he was lying. If someone lied, they at least needed to keep track of their lies to avoid getting caught. Opening her eyes, she looked at him, ready to confront him when her vision dimmed and her mind spiraled into confusing circles.

-

The doctor knocked on Jasper's study a couple hours after checking on Ayla. She had had so many other patients needing to be checked, she had almost forgotten to speak to her king. The maids had assured her that he was in his study, so when she knocked, she didn't wait for a response before entering.

Latching the door behind her, the doctor quickly bowed, knowing how displeased his majesty would be, but also placed her finger on her lips, calling him not to speak.

If her fears were true, they would have to be careful about any eavesdropping from the maids. Without giving him much time to object, she went to his desk and used his pen and paper to scribble something down.

When she handed it to him, she met his eyes evenly before dropping them as she bowed at the waist and waited to see what he did.

The note read: majesty poisoned. Babe dead. Enemies, who?

Due to her broken English, the words were misspelled and jumbled up, but still clear enough to decipher.
