In spite of his command, the girl stayed planted alongside the horse. Worry threw a heavy shadow over her eyes as the cave opening became engulfed with fire and Kevin vanished from her sight. Her brain kicked into gear, driving her up onto the horse without a saddle.

Digging her heals into the horse's belly, she pushed him forward. The vibrant greenery around her became a single green blur as her horse ran.  After a few minutes, she pulled on the mane, bringing to an abrupt halt. Her eyes scan the area, looking for Kevin.

He was up before she reached the horse moving at an astonishing speed. He had his gear on and swords strapped in mere seconds like he had trained for something like this for years. He didn't take the time to look her way but called to her as he headed out of the cave the way they came in. In the direction the enemy was approaching.

"Ride as fast as you can. Ill catch up."

Then exit of the cave erupted with fire as he vanished, the covering they had arranged the night before exploded outward with a hail of flames. Two knights on the brink of entering were blow backwards. He appeared behind the third in a vortex of flame that receded from his skin as though giving birth to his human form. His hand flashed and the ring of metal plaid in the air as the knight fell to the ground. A dent in his helmet where Kevin had struck mere moments before.

It took mere moments for him to arouse her from her slumber. When she did awaken, she was momentarily confused. She blinked up at him and then she heard the sounds of approaching danger and it gave meaning to his words.

Hera quickly stood and grabbed her blade from a nearby boulder where it had sat during the night. Moving from there, she quickly worked to ready the horse. All the while, she listened in heightened awareness for any possible threats.

His eyes snapped open early the next morning, before the sun had creeped over the horizen. His ears picked up the sound of twigs snapping uder foot in the forest. He couldnt be sure what it was but they needed to act fast as to not be caught. He softly grasped Hera's shoulders and gave her a gentle shake.

"Hera we must go. I hear people approaching."

He intertwined his fingers with her softly running his thumb over hers. He Dragged the kiss as long as possible before very reluctantly breaking it. He kept the embrace close not wanting their bodys to part and he stared into her eyes contently. Still getting the feeling she was holding something back. Though it did not bother him. If she had secrets she wished to keep from him then that was her choice. He knew with time she would reveal all things. But still he had to ask in a faint but strong voice.

"Care to share your secret with me? I wont force you and understand if you want to keep it to yourself. But a secret shared is a burden halved."

His free hand softly caressed her arm from shoulder to elbow. His eyes searching hers contently. not prying just questioning.

As she knelt beside him and her arms wrapped around him he leaned into her embrace slightly. Tough her words were ones he had heard before, the carried so much more meaning than any ones ever had. He had chosen to do good with the rest of his life, and left his kingdom so he could do so. As she said it was ok for him to move on his body slowly un tensed and he nodded. With a swift motion he was able to life her from the ground and set her in his lap with little effort. His arms wrapped around her pulling her tight against his chest. He wanted to feel her close more than anything, he needed her comfort.

He opened his hands and the fire swept over his body pulling away from his skin. It balled in his hands before he closed them into fists quenching the flames. Steam rose from his body from were the sweat had been evaporated away. She said he was not a monster for his abilities. That he was defined by how he used them. With a frown he looked down and slowly sunk to his knees. He looked almost ashamed of himself. He opened his mouth to speak his words heavy with sorrow as he stared at the ground.

"I have not always been the man I am today. In my youth I was more arrogant, full hardy. I did not know the value of a human life. So when armies came to claim my home, I took them without thought or consequence. I have stood as a single man in front of entire platoons of men. Legions of them came and legions of them fell. I enjoyed it, slaying the men that threatened my home. I've wiped entire kingdoms from the map in the course of a day because I felt defending my home was a just cause. I thought that meant I could enjoy what I was doing. When the flames burned down to nothing but ash, and the dust settled, I looked over what I had done. The lifeless corpses of thousands of men lay before me. Each one taken at my hand, and it dawned on me in that moment. They were only doing exactly what I had been doing. Defending their homes, doing what they thought best for their kingdom. Making sure their families would live another day, and I had taken them away from the people they loved and defended. In that moment I knew what everyone had said was true. I was a monster, and I fell to me knees and wept for the men I had only moments before considered my enemies."

If she inclined her chin a few inches, she was certain that their lips would meet. She restrained herself though, finding the moment not to right. When he suggested that she tell him her secret, she scrunched her nose. But he didn't give her a chance to decide on the matter as he stood up to show her more of his ability.

Hera wanted to stop him out of fear of him burning himself, but she bit her lip and made herself sit still and watch. In silent awe, she watched as the flames licked his skin without burning it. His words created a frown along her lips. As the flames engulfed him, she blinked, but otherwise remained unwavering. His smile reassured her that he was fine, making her shoulders fall in relief.

"You are not a monster because of your abilities. You define yourself by how you use them," she said, still infuriated with those in his past that had labeled him as nothing more than a heartless beast.

He looked into her eyes and raised a brow as he saw something hidden flickering just beneath the surface. He smiled as she spoke and slowly sat up. He brought his face rather close to hers as he spoke. Keeping his lips almost a teasing distance from hers. He noticed how the fire highlighted her body. Though he did not know what she was thinking her though of playing with fire was frighteningly close to the truth. His voice was soft, almost alluring as he spoke to her.

"I show you what I can do, if you tell me your secret."

He stood intent on showing her even if she said no. The flames glow danced across his skin creating shadows in the dips of his muscles making them look all the more defined. He put his hand directly into the fire swiftly, as though he were trying to burn himself. Though after a moment there was no smell of sired flesh or the sound that came along with it. As he pulled his hand from the fire some followed clinging to his hand. He waved his fingers through the fire as he stood tall to show her it didnt so much as discomfort him.

"I have struggled with being called a monster my entire life. For in my heart I am but a kind man. But one good thing comes from being thought of as a monster. You see men do no fear men....they fear monsters."

With the last word he jetted his hand down to his side and the fire enveloped his entire body in a flash. He stood among the flames without flinching. His eyes peering at her through the flames. A calm smile coming to his face that he parted the flames so she could see.

"There is a fine line between flattery and a compliment," she said, gazing into his eyes rather intently. "I do not give credit to where it isn't do."

She winked at him, lightening the mood even more than it was and playfully nudged his shoulder.

"And what else are you talented at?" she asked.

There was something within her eyes that told him that she was hiding more than just the intensifying emotions his body was producing in her. She looked away finally and drew her knees to her chest and wrapped her arms around her legs to help ward off the chill of the air hitting her dampened clothing.

"People fear what they do not know or understand," she said. "You deserve more than their fear."

Hera glanced up at him meaningfully. Her eyes quickly fell to his lips, as unspoken thoughts passed through her expression. She swallowed and looked back into his eyes, feeling as though she were playing with fire.

He seemed content enough in her presence, a fact that brought her much satisfaction. The light played tricks with his torso, making it seem much more seductive than it should have been; it perhaps it was because of how attracted she really was to him. She looked up again and caught him staring unabashedly. Her blush deepened as she held his eyes, waiting for him to reply.

He finished his rabbit almost as quickly as she had. A smile smile returning to his face as she said she was not offended. He felt their shoulders brush and looked up from the fire intime to see her scoot away just and inch. He couldnt help but notice the dampness in her hair making it cascade down her shoulders. She had washed her dress and the damp fabric clung to her frame, he tried to peel his eyes away but felt his cheeks burn red as he looked over her. A wave of fire washed over his nerves and for a few moments he felt as though his head was swiming. He absent mindedly closed her gap sitting next to her leaning back against the rock wall. Her beauty and elegance aroused more than just a blush in him as well but he did his best to stay gentlmenly.

"Impressive? You flatter me, as for my abilities with fire, most would think me a demon for them. I have long since accepted them as part of myself. I can do much...much more than simply light a fire."

He stared at her as he spoke. He found no reson to hide his feelings any longer as she new and reciprocated them, so he looked upon her without relent. A soft content look within his eyes, for beholding someone you love is one of the few pleasures a life of battle affords you. He was not going to let it slip past him.

By the way she fixed her dress and the slight stutter in her words he feared in some way he may have offended her. He wasent trying to insinuate that she needed to bath, he simple thought the soak would be enjoyable after the long day. He watched her walk deeper into the cave and cursed at himself under his breath once she was far enough away. Was he a fool or was it just common practice to put his foot in his mouth. By the time she returned the meat was cooked an laid out on two clean leaves. His skin was now reflectant of the hues of fire for he had worked up a sweat leaning over the fire to cook the meat. His skin trickled with the beads of sweat as they rolled down his body of his muscles.

"Im sorry if I offended you Hera. I just thought youd enjoy the cool water after a long day."

He kept his eyes locked on the fire. keeping them almost out of sight. In the dim cave even with the fire going they would appear to glow more brightly then they did out in the sunlight. Something he was always wary of, many people having pegged him as a demon.

He followed her into the cave and laid the rabbits on a large stone. He started undoing the leather straps of his lightweight leather armor and after a few moments shed everything that was on his upper torso and laid in neatly on another stone. His muscles were sore from the tight leather and riding the horse. He got onto his knees and started arranging firewood he had already gathere into a small tp formation. with kindeling in the center of the sticks. He touched the dried grass with a finger and sparks ignited the grass only a second later flames began to lap again the sticks and crackle shedding light in the cavern. He could clearly now be seen, bare chested, with a very defined muscle structure. He had been sweating so he almost glistened in the light of the fire. Though if she noticed that he had seemingly created fire from his bare hand she would take little notice to his physic.

"This cave has a second entrance. Or for us an emergency exit if we need to flee. Its twenty meters or so beyond a small pond that lies further back in the cave. We can get drinking water from the pond it is clean, its also rather cool and refreshing if your in need of bathing."

He had seemingly predicted her thoughts when it came to bathing. But truth be told he was just giving the lay out of the cave, it was mere conincudence that she had been thinking about bathing.

Hera glanced up at the sound of him approaching and put one last berry in the skirt of her dress before folding the fabric to hold the berries in place.

"I can skin them if you want to get the fire on," she suggest, going into the cave to put the fruit up.

The horse nudged her shoulder as she passed him, making her stop to pat his neck. She smiled at the animal. She sighed at her dress, wishing that she picked a different outfit to wear today. Also, she really wanted to bathe. She left the horse to help him prepare the meal.

He came back to the entrace with one last large branch that provided the rest of the cover they needed. He propped it into place and easly found her gathering berries. He listened silently for a moment as she hummed. Her voice was beautiful. He was holding two dead rabbits by the hind legs and after a few moment he cleared his throat and spoke.

"I caught some rabbits. They should go nicely with the berries."

His attempt to soothe her worked, even if only for a little bit. The woman nodded her head and smiled at his touch, but after they had started riding again, the smile vanished as she began to worry over her mistake once again. What he had said was true, they needed to avoid towns, but her goal had been to get him out of a tree, not into a cave. Before she could dwell on it for long, he stopped the horse and she took his hand and jumped down.

Hera smiled back at him and nodded without objecting. Taking the horse by the reins, she guided it into the cave and tied the reins to a rock before going back out to help him disguise the entrance. The sharp twigs made her want her riding gloves, but something about having to fend for oneself increased her mood.

Once she had helped as much as possible, she hunted down some berries, staying close by the cave and him. As she picked the fruit, she hummed softly to herslef, thinking of the kingdom and the kiss.

He pulled himself up onto the horse. Grabbing the reins and steering the horse in the directions she indicated. As late afternoon threatened to turn into dusk he noticed her become uneasy. Running her fingers through her hair almost fidgety. He wondered what was wrong untill she admitted that she must have missed a turn and they were lost. He brought his hand to her and squeezed it making a quiet shhh noise.

"Dont fret, it must have happened when we were running from the stables. It could have happened to anyone all we were worried about was getting away safely. I recognize where we are a little, we should avoid towns as anyone looking for us would suspect since you are of royaltie youd refuse to sleep outside. If im right there should be a cave not to far from here."

They trotted on the horse for another twenty minuets or so before coming to a cave opening just big enough for the horse to fit into. He leapt down and offered her a hand again.

"Take out faithful ride into the cave, it opens up just past the entrance. Im going to word on disguising the entrance and find something for us to eat."

He kissed her hand and gave her a smile before walking off to gather shrubbery and tree limbs to block out the cave entrance.

There was silence between them as Kevin allowed the horse to drink and also dipped his head beneath the water. She was not particularly thirsty so she opted to stand back and allow him room to do what he needed to. Once they were ready to leave, she hopped onto the horse with the help of his hand and leaned forward to make room for him to get on.

"We need to go a bit further straight ahead and there should be a road that will lead us there," she said, softly.

However, soon she realized they had taken a wrong turn or had missed one. She scrunched her nose in silent disgust over her poor directions, but didn't voice the issue. By now, it was late afternoon and even of they somehow managed to find the road, they would not reach her cousin's before nightfall. She raked her fingers through her hair, upset with herself for getting them lost.

"We will need to set up camp soon or try to find an inn to stay in," she said, irritated. Hera exhaled. "I'm sorry, I don't know where I missed a turn or..." Her sentence trailed.

He nodded and took another deep breath. He grabbed the horses reins and lead it to the river so it could drink. He also leaned down and dipped his head into the water. The cool water both refreshing and snapping his attention back to what it needed to be on. He stood slowly giving their steed a few more moments to drink. Then leading it away from the water he offered Hera his hand again to help her back on the horse. He did all this in regretable silence. He wanted nothing more than to stay by the river with her, loose themselves in the afternoon and enjoy eachothers embrace, whatever that may lead to. But he knew for her saftey it was important they reached her cousins home by nightfall.

Hera was dissapointed when her feet touched the ground and he withdrew his lips from hers, but she knew they had only a small time to spend together. She watched with a small smile as he opened his mouth and then closed it. Without speaking, she leaned into the hand on her cheek and closed her eyes. She inhaled his scent and for the first time since their departure, she felt completely at ease. When she opened her eyes, she noticed his hair had fallen over his eyes.

"We need to go," she said, regretting every word as it was spoken.

Hera combed his hair with her fingers, removing them from his face.
