The book she had been reading fell down onto her lap when Jasper had entered. She was in a night gown, hardly dressed for company. Rolling her eyes, she covered herself with the blanket and then nodded toward the door.

"There's this invention called a 'door'. You use it as a knocking device before entering a dwelling," she said with sarcasm.

She shrugged at his question and moaned in aggravation.

"I was stupid. But now I can't get out of bed for a few days! Can you believe that? But it's okay, I've already bribed a servant to help me escape," she explained, clearly thinking herself smart.

Then, her eyes scrutinized him, daring him to speak more. Why was he worried about her one minute and then mean the other? One thing was for certain, she wasn't going to play his game anymore.

"What do you care? At least if he had finished the job, you could have married someone else," she said, a bit short.

Then she sighed. "I'm sorry, that was uncalled for. But give me a break Jasper, I don't know if you hate me or can stand me. I can't trust you and I'm expected to marry you? Just, give me at least some kind of respect for trying."

Of course she didn't expect him to really reply. In fact, she expected him to say something smart and walk out. Essie didn't give him time to react, however and all of a sudden she winced at gripped her stomach. She cursed and sat up, trying to find a more comfortable position.

At least an hour had passed since Essie left Jasper behind on the mountain. Not once did sleep come for him, despite the fact that his eyes never opened. His find wandered far away, to a land no one else had ever been. It explored leaps and depth until it came to a discovery that was hard for Jasper to face. When his eyes opened, they were a warm red color.

He needed to see Essie again. He needed to talk to her. And though he had never done it before, he needed to apologize...Feelings, Emotions, romance... These were all things Jasper had little experience with. They were things that frightened him, and yet, they came crashing at his door, demanding that he let them in! How was he supposed to deal with that! Of all the lessons his Father had required him to take, none had prepared him for his current predicament.

As he rode back to the Castle, he tried to put together a script for what he would say when he saw Essie. How he would let her know how he felt about all this; About her. He was pretty sure that if he came to her genuinely, she would at least listen. When he arrived, He returned Shadow to his pin, and headed straight for his fiancee's room. But what he would find was more than surprising.

Essie was laying on her back, her abdomen wrapped in bloody bandages! What the hell happened since she left him on the mountain?! Solid red eyes were overtaken by a black shadow as he stood in the doorway, hands shaking. He was frozen in time for a moment, before making his way to her bed, shades of blue washing into his eyes as he came to the realization that she was awake, and seemed to be alright. Sweet relief... "What happened?" He asked. Everything he had planned to tell her went out the window. Right now the only thing that mattered was her condition. It was funny how things went full circle. "I shouldn't have let you come down alone..."

Essie discovered when she had returned that the trumpets had been sounded for a hunting party, not for her and Jasper. She was relieved to avoid being the subject of the castle. After putting the horse back in the stables, she sought out the training grounds not too far from the horses.

A man was already there, fighting with some stick limbs and a sack cloth for a face. He turned to face her when she had cleared her throat. A smile appeared as he bowed accordingly.

"It has been awhile," he said, rising from the bow. "I hope you're not rusty."

Essie shrugged. "Guess you will have to find out."

She went over and retrieved a blade and came back to stand in front of him. The man had sandy blond hair with traces of white in it that showed his age. Recently, she had heard that he had lost his wife to a plague that had been wiping out a great deal of people across seas. Although, he didn't appear upset now, she knew that his grieving had taken its toll on the man because of the bottle of liquor hiding beneath his jacket next to the dummy.

Without waiting for his say, she stepped forward a swung. He countered and sidestepped in order to avoid her second swing that followed.

She enjoyed fighting since it made her act instead of think. Sure, thinking was obviously involved but there was no room for outside thoughts to invade a spar. Essie often thought too much and it left her exhausted.

The fight carried on and ended with her win. Another began but soon ended when she began to recount Jasper's behavior and the marriage awaiting her. The man, not expecting her absentminded gestures, accidentally drew blood. She gasped at the pain that followed and glanced down at the sight of blood covering the clothes around the wound.

"Essie," he exclaimed, running to her aid but she quickly shook him off.

"I'm fine, " she grunted. "I was being careless, I'm sorry."

He nodded. "Yeah, you were. Let's get you up to your room and I'll retrieve a physician."

She was going to insist otherwise but she was too lightheaded. The princess lost consciousness before they made it up to her room and woke up soon after the physician arrived. He bandaged the wound and told her to stay in bed for a few days and she would be fine. She thanked him before he left, secretly planning on leaving to explore the town the next morning.

Like she could really stay in bed for a few days!

Jasper hated when she was like that. He could deal with when she was angry, and combative. He even rather enjoyed it! But when she was silent and reserved, it made him feel a pain in his chest that he couldn't explain. Her aura radiated of hurt. He didn't want to hurt her. Only to keep her at a distance. And then the words flowed from her lips...

"I am."

He couldn't stop himself from turning his head toward her any more than he could stop his reflective blue eyes from shifting to a dark, faded one. It wasn't fair! Why couldn't she just maintain things the way they had always been!? Jasper heard the sound of the bells. He heard Essie's call to return. He even heard her horse trot away, but he didn't move. Only lay on his back and close his eyes. It wasn't that he was sleepy though... It was his attempt to hide the dark grey that his eyes had taken. Though Essie was gone, he couldn't help but feel her staring into his eyes, reading everything that they portrayed... And though he never shared the meanings behind the colors his eyes took on, some were just obvious... He remained atop the mountain for hours, thinking about the rest of his life. He would have to come to terms with the fact that things were changing, and they would never return to the way they were...

She did not react to his comment. Rather, there was an alarming void of expression detailed across her face as she stared at him. The thing he had said with a sharpened tongue left her silent and withdrawn. Why was he like that? One moment bearable and the next, an ****. Her eyebrows fell forward as she contemplated over the past few hours. There was no reason she had given him to act this way, none in the least.

Was he just so upset with the arranged marriage that he needed to lash out on her? Or was he scared?

Her face had gained minimal discomfort as her head dipped with her lips in a frown. A sigh slipped her mouth as her fingers toyed with a loose string on her shirt. Essie didn't know how to handle the situation because she wasn't certain of the reasons for his cold exterior. Anger was certainly a possibility, but one she refused to succumb to.

Instead, she looked up at him, her lashes distorting the hints of moonlight that brushed the irises of her eyes and replied, "I am."

It hadn't been a complete lie, not really. She wasn't happy being forced into a loveless marriage but Jasper was a great ally to have. But that was it, he wasn't her friend and he was often cruel towards her. It had been one thing when they were kids, but now it really conveyed his opinion about her. Was she really that bad?

In spite of his attitude, she had a lot of respect for him and she was at least trying to compromise with him to make this work.

She stood, looking away from him. Maybe, they would be like other royals who participated in open marriages. The thought of it wasn't ideal but she didn't see any other way to make him happy either.

A trumpet sounded in the distance, drawing her attention to the direction of the castle. Perhaps, they had discovered the missing prince and princess?

"Duty calls," she muttered to herself and went to her horse's side.

Once the horse was untied, she mounted and grasped onto the reigns. She didn't wait for him as she took off toward the castle.

What was he thinking?! Jasper knew Essie was attractive. He had known since they were kids! He loved being close to her! But she could never know that! It was better for her to go on hating him; To go on thinking he hated her! That was the only way to keep this thing going.

Jasper's eyes were unable to maintain a lie. In order for him to convince Essie that his disdain for her mirrored her own for him, he had to convince himself that it was true. He had done so for years, though he secretly admired her for her ability to so well mirror the expectations the Royals had of her. He saw strength in that. But he also found it annoying. So he focused on that, and teased her for being a goody goody. But on this day she proved him wrong. She proved she could roll with the big dogs, and come out on top! How could he continue his charade now? There was only one way...

::What did you expect from your husband?::

Those were the words he wanted to speak to her. In their entire lives, Jasper and Essie had not shared a moment of sincerity such as this one. He wanted it to continue, to know what she dreamed of for herself, and not just what was decided for her. But that wasn't an option.... "As if you could manage to pull off a husband of my caliber without being assigned! You should be grateful to your parents!" Jasper knew how to say it in a way that Essie would know he was just teasing, but he didn't. He was as conceited and abnoxious in his tone as he knew how to be. It was the only thing he could do at this point to protect himself.

Essie caught the look in his eyes. Whether it was the training of a future leader or simply a woman's intuition, she did not know but she recognized his pause and his stance before she could notice the distinct pink of his eyes. Even in the dimmed moonlight, they shown brightly. Then, he turned and changed his demeanor abruptly.

She purposely glanced at the ground in front of her toes. If he had acted on it, would she have allowed him to kiss her? Perhaps, in order to begin to establish comfort on a physical level. Still, did she want to, just for any other reason? The answer was clear to her but she would not make it known to him.

Silently, she went to the spot he invited her to sit at and sat with her knees bent against her chest. Essie laid her chin upon the curves of her knees, looking across the land. Her gaze lifted when he laughed but her expression was void of humor as the color of his eyes changed once again. His expression sobered while he spoke, calling for all seriousness.

In response, she nodded and looked away, unable to hold his gaze when his eyes impacted her so. And it wasn't due to their color either, but because of the openness that they conveyed.

"Someone I'm not?" she nodded. "There's no room inside of the castle or under a crown, to be anything but perfect. Don't get me wrong, I am honored to serve as their leader but I can't help but want more for myself sometimes. Like being able to choose my own clothes or fall in love spontaneously, not like-..."

She stopped, aware of the fact that she had forgotten herself. Yet, he had to feel the same! She was looking at him, hoping he wasn't offended by her words.

"I mean, not like you're not handsome, smart, outgoing, funny..."

She was realizing his qualities as they passed her lips. She blinked.

"But just not what I had expected for my husband, " she said, coyly as to not have to explain the truth but not telling a lie either.

He could take it as a good or a bad thing, but she wasn't in the position to imply either one.

The shades of yellow that filled Jasper's eyes upon their arrival were indicative of happiness, fun, and excitement. He was also in the midst of a fit of laughter as the woman told him of the capabilities of her "charm." When she batted her eyes at him in a clearly over-dramatized manner, he feigned a trance, walking toward her like a brainwashed junkie. "Can't... resist... eyelashes..." He said, teasing her for her act, but when he arrived directly in front of her, his smile faded. Shades of pink flooded into his irises, as if being poured in from a pitcher. For a moment, he truly fell into the trance he had faked. It was certain that he would kiss her in that moment.

He quickly snapped out of it, however, taking two quick steps away from her, and walking over to a clear spot, where he could sit down and overlook the mountains, with the Kingdom at the bottom. He patted the spot next to him as Essie thanked him for his assistance earlier. "It's nothing." He told her. It was best if she thought he just did it as a favor to his future wife, than that he had any feelings in the matter himself.

He laughed when Essie asked him if he knew the definition of the word "Renegade." But when his laughter stopped, a deep blue color spread from the center of his eyes, filling them completely. "It's funny. They came up with the same name for me in the Castle, because I have a tendency to disappear at important moments." He paused for just a second as another thought inturrupted his process. "Usually to go to the very place you just got me banned from. Maybe I'll buy the place so I can go back..." He shook his head and continued. "Anyway, I know I won't be able to live that way forever. But It's nice being able to get out. To be someone else, if only for a little while. Isn't that right, Adelaide?" He looked over to Essie with eyes hopeful that they would be met with understanding. At the end of the day, she was the only person in the world who could truly relate to him, after all...

For a reason unbeknownst to her, Jasper had extended a protective aura as he stood up to the man. It was difficult to keep a straight face through his performance as she watched the man before him squirm in his large boots.

Performance.

That's all that it was. But she could have sworn his actions imitated sincerity. As always, Essie was probably looking too deep and thinking too far. She was under the assumption that he had only stood up for her since she was his future wife, not because he cared for her.

There was no time to entertain the true motive behind his character. The fight had dispersed a multitude of drunken violence which quickly sent the two royals out the door and onto their horses' backs to escape it.

Her horse was less than a foot behind Shadow as they galloped over the mountainside. When they came to a stop, Essie was laughing uncontrollably and leaning over the horse's neck, trying to catch her breath. The laughter subsided quickly and she shook her head in a negative gesture that agreed with his statement.

"You doubt my charm," she replied, tidying up the wild strands of hair around her head. "I could win over a mercenary with a simple bat of my eyes."

She turned her head toward him, batting her lashing in an exaggerated example. Then, she grew quiet and glanced over the land before them. She soon sighed, expelling the stress of her wandering thoughts.

"Thanks, for earlier," she said, looking up from under her lashes at him. "He's an ass."

Essie got down off of her horse and tied it beside Shadow. Idly, she played with its mane with her head bent and her hair throwing shadows over her eyes as it blocked out the moonlight.

She removed her fingers from the horse and worked the strings of her corset so that it loosened enough for her to remove it. The white, long-sleeved shirt that remained was tight enough to hug her breasts but it was loose around her stomach, giving her air to breathe that the corset failed to. She placed the corset in the compartment on the saddle and then folded her arms and glanced at Jasper.

"Renegade, huh?" she inquired, arching a single brow as she smirked. "You do know the definition of a renegade, right? Kind of ironic being a future king and all..."

As she held his gaze, it suddenly dawned on her why he was notorious with the ladies. It was the alarming colors of his eyes. They constantly gave away his secrets, something that many would have despised but he was indifferent on the matter. Jasper never appeared to mind people knowing how he felt, and she thought he was even empowered by the fact. But more than that, the colors swirled relentlessly but not without purpose. It seemed like an unspoken challenge, who could make his eyes turn a color that would compromise all other colors that had ever touched his eyes.

She frowned and glanced away, not wanting to draw attention to herself by staring.

Jasper didn't know why, but he got quite a bit of enjoyment from Essie's aggressive glare toward the red headed woman. It was protective, despite the disdain she had carried for him all their lives. It was fun to watch, as her eyes threatened the woman, as if she was marking her territory. It was hot actually! A cheeky grin played on his face and eyes overflowed with yellow and orange teased the woman. "You didn't have to be so mean!" He said with a laugh.

His turn to be protective would come soon though, as if Karma was having a laugh at his expense, a rather large man came, and literally lifted his fiancee out of her seat. Under her real name, the man could be put to death for such action... His fists tightened, but when Essie looked to him for help, he couldnt' help but to consider leaving her to squirm. He didn't like the guys familiarity with her though, as much as he hated to admit it. By the time Essie spoke to introduce the two, Jasper was already on his feet, his hand extended to greet the man with a far more powerful handshake than expected; One that actually caused the burly man quite a bit of pain, though he didn't show it.

The man then boldly turned back to Essie, as if the she hadn't just told him she was on a date. "Oh I can answer that one!" Jasper said. His voice was high and spirited like a child answering a question in class. "She's been at my house." His voice was no longer excited now. It was deep, and threatening. When the man looked back at him, he would see eyes of blood red, that dared him to bother the Princess again. Seeming to get the hint, he meandered off to a bar, grumbling something incoherent along the way.

Then Essie went off too. Off to gam ble? Jasper had to admit, he liked the side of her that he was seeing. He turned his back and leaned his elbow against the table to watch the game, keen eyes catching on to what was happening very early. Maybe marrying her wouldn't be as bad as he thought... Not that they would be able to do things like this after their wedding... Or even after the announcement! Everyone who knew them by their alias names would know their true identities on that day...

But then she got bold, and bet the horses! That kind of inconsideration was infuriating! But at the same time, the spontaneity was a turn on! Jasper was unsure what to think...but for the time being, he prepared to slip outside and grab the horses in case things didn't go well.

And boy didn't they... Jasper was preparing to knock the large man on his ass when all hell broke loose! In the frenzy, the two escaped to the horses, and out into the night! It wasn't like they needed her winnings anyway! This time, Jasper took the lead, Shadow carrying him up the mountain so quickly that the wind blew his hat off his head and back down the mountain. When they reached the peak, he stopped, and tied the horse to a tree, laughing aloud all the while. "You know we'll never be allowed back there again, right?"

"I date men! It was merely a joke. You're just butt hurt that I am a regular here too," she replied.

She blushed ten shades of red when he pointed her out to the woman. The woman glanced at her, considering his offer but Es could tell that her preference was to have him. Reading too far into his politeness, she took a seat on hits lap and folded her legs. She was seemingly right at home on top of his thighs. Essie should have cared but considering it was her fiance, it bothered, even if only a little.

"As he said, 'his date'," Essie said, pointedly.

She kept eye contact with the woman without a smile intact. The woman seemed upset but did not challenge her. After she left, Essie remained frowning as she sipped on the rum. Suddenly, a man wandered in. He was almost tall enough to reach the low wooden ceiling. Without speaking, he meandered across the bar, talking to men and women as he went.

She turned pale and turned her head after she replaced her hood.

Please don't see me, please don't see me ple-

"Addie!" he shouted in a deep voice when he spotted her.

Damn it!

He came over to the table and lifted her out of the chair in order to give her a tight, bear-like hug. His almost black eyes glimmered as he sat her down on the floor. She glanced up at him and gave him the tightest and faintest of smiles that looked more like a dog when eating peanut butter.

"Hey... Rex," she stammered, glancing at Jasper, clearly looking for an excuse to leave; or run out.

"How you doing?" he asked, still ignoring Jasper's existence.

"Good, just on a date," she pointed out. "Rex, Jasper, Japser, Rex."

Rex glanced at Jasper and half nodded and then he turned back to Es. "I haven't seen you around. Where have you been?"

Es stuttered incoherently before noticing an open spot at table filled with burly old men playing black jack with gold coins.

"Sorry, my turn to play," she replied.

She went and sat at the table. Rex didn't seem happy, in the least and went over to the bar to order a couple drinks. Fifteen minutes into the game, she was clearly winning and decides to bet the horses without Jaspers consent. She appeared overly confident with her winning streak and didn't seem at all worried.

With her cards concealed she decided to stick and when it was time to reveal her hand, she had a perfect 21. That's when things started to get out of hand...

Jealous Rex came over and tried to speak to her but she was too busy celebrating her win to notice. He got angry, jerked her out of her chair by her upper arm and lifted her into the air. He shook her by her arm and before she had time to react, cards started flying out of her sleeves. She turned white and the bar got eerily silent before the men at the table started a brawl in their attempt to catch her. Rex, stunned by the coming events, dropped her, allowing her to flee. She went over, grabbed Jasper, and pulled him out of the door.

The entire time, she was grinning from one ear to another.

She came here on the regular, and she had a "usual?" This was a lot for Jasper to process, but one thing was for sure. For all the years she had gotten on him about his "bad habits" hers sure seemed to be lining up with his all of a sudden... Eyes full of Orange, blue, and purple looked on at the woman as she made herself more comfortable, before trailing over in the direction the woman pointed. That red headed woman... Jasper knew her. She had made passes at him several times in the past, but he always figured it was because she assumed he had money. She didn't seem much like the "genuine" type. Not that Jasper was ever looking for anything serious anyway, but he never gave the woman the time of day.

"Not at all!" He said with a slight laugh. "You don't date men right? Why don't you give her a try!"  He laughed out loud this time. The thought of a Princess and such a woman as her together... It was simply laughable! His laughter was halted when Chuck returned with Three shots of Rum for Jasper, and a tall ale for Essie. His comment brought Jasper's laughter back to the surface. He looked at the woman's hair as he laughed. It had grown longer since the last time he saw her. "You're right Chuck! If she acts right, I just might marry her one day!" One day entirely too soon... It was a joke, and it made the Bar tender laugh, but both the man and the woman knew the reality of the situation. It was no laughing matter.

It was odd that Essie felt the need to explain herself, as if he hadn't watched her hair grow, only for her to cut it over and over again. He started to ask her why it mattered, when the red haired woman made her way over. When she addressed him, he couldn't help but laugh! "Hey there!" He said in amusement. That was probably more attention than he had ever given her, but this time, he would play along. He patted his leg and the woman sat across his lap. But he never looked at her. His eyes remained settled on Essie. "My date here just pointed you out." he said with a mischievous grin, hoping that Essie would catch his insinuation. "She was saying that she wanted to meet you. Why don't you tell us a little about yourself?"

"Now, Chuck, you know I don't date men," she joked, sitting down at the table with Jasper. "You know what I want."

The bartender chuckled and went about getting the drinks. She removed the hood, letting loose black curls that curved around her breasts and touched her abdomen before coming to an end. Essie rolled her eyes at Jasper.

"I started coming here when I started dating..." Her sentence trailed as her cheeks reddened.

She waved her hand, dismissing the thought and quickly changed the subject.

Pointing to a redhead in the West corner she said, "looks like she could use some Renegade. Why don't you go see if she would be willing to help you have fun before your wedding night?"

The bartender came back and sat the drinks on the table. He started to walk away when he stopped and put his hand on her shoulder with a crooked grin.

"You must really like him," he said, looking at Jasper and then back to Essie. "I haven't seen her hair down in quite some time."

She choked on the rum she had started drinking as she shook her head in denial. He slapped her back and then walked away before she was able to reply.

When her throat had cleared she looked at Jasper. "The hood would fall if my hair was up," she explained, weakly.

Though it had been the truth, the bartender's assumption caused her to blush again. Before she could try to explain herself more, the redheaded woman came up and put a hand on Renegade's shoulder. She was short and stunning with blues eyes and shoulder length hair.

"Hey cutie, " she said, to Renegade, smiling.

Essie rolled her eyes and glanced away and continued to sip on the alcohol.

That was it? She just wanted to get away? And she used an imaginary riding lesson as an excuse? It was a classic Jasper move. He couldn't help but smile when she spoke the words, swirls of light yellow filling his irises. "Sounds good to me." He said, taking off behind her. This would be a perfect time to run, to take off in his own direction but something compelled the Prince to follow her. He wanted to see where she was going.

After a swift and fast paced ride, Essie stopped at the most ironic of places; The Raven's Keep. It was a place Jasper actually frequented. He figured her Highness would be afraid of a place like this, but since she chose it, he figured she was feeling adventurous.  He tied Shadow to the wall, confident that he wouldn't let anyone else touch him. He held the door open for the woman, and walked in behind her, heading straight for the bar. "Well if it isn't The Renegade himself! Said the burly man behind the counter. He was the only one who knew Jasper's true identity. "And you brought a date with you? That's rare" He looked to examine the woman for only a second before his eyes widened. "Is that Adelaide?!" It was clear that he recognized the woman, though he called her an odd name that amused Jasper.

"Oh, so you and -Adelaide- know each other?" He asked, taking a seat at the bar." This was interesting.  She had come here on purpose! Multicolored eyes settled on the woman in amusement. She had been caught! It was common knowledge that Jasper did things like this on the regular, but the sweet and innocent Princess? This was a valuable bit of information. "The regular, Chuck" He said, with a soft beat on the bar. "And whatever the lady wants."

The horse she had always been fond of found its way to the princess as she neared it. It was white with a grey patch on its nose and just above each of its hooves. She had nick named it Elsa, though she knew it had another name but the horse never complained. Saddling the horse, she sighed at his earlier question.

"I need to get out of this place," she explained. "I did not think you of all people would complain."

She climbed up onto the horse and held the reigns tightly. Then, once he was ready, she snapped the reigns and caused the horse to jolt forward. It was his choice to follow but it became clear that she was heading towards the mountains. The horse carried her into the treeline that surrounded the castle and after only about fifteen minutes of riding, they would come up on a tavern with a wooden sign that hung above the door.

It read 'Raven's Keep '.

Those who were entering or exiting the establishment, were rough looking and were far from good company for members of the royal family.

She smirked, wondering if he would follow her into it.

Jasper rose from the table with Essie, and bowed his head respectfully to his parents before retreating to his room and donning simple black and white riding attire. Essie was up to something, though he didn't know what. His theory was confirmed when he saw her, attempting to hide her identity with her attire. He wouldn't admit to anyone why it was so easy for him to identify her, but let's just say he knew.

"What are you up to?" He asked, as he entered the stables, walking immediately to the stall containing his favorite black hose. His official name was Francis, but Jasper called him "Shadow." (xD) He prepared the saddle and stirrups, and waited for Essie. Whatever the deal was, he was intrigued enough to play along.

He knew exactly how to change it up to play along. With every thought that exited his lips, she found herself taken back and reeling for a reply. Did he want to play a game with his parents or did he want to make his hatred for her publicly known? So damn confusing...

But he did play along, giving her the ability to keep going on with the charade. Perhaps, he was giving her the answer then.

After dropping his hand, she stood up, bowed, and smiled at the royals before her.

"If you will excuse us, wouldn't want to be late, " she said.

"I will go change and meet you by the stables, Jasper, " she said before leaving to go to her room.

Without taking too long, she changed and quickly made her way down to the stables. She wore a hood with a long cape that concealed her face. Essie was also dressed in a brown corset with a long sleeved, white blouse with black plants that clearly belonged to a man.

Once outside, she kept the hood up so to not be identified by the servants. She waited to see Jasper before going to fetch a horse.

Dammit... Her reaction was flawless... Not even a moment's hesitation. She was more formidable than Jasper had given her credit for. Either that, or she had actually grown up a bit... She even went as far as to defend him!

The King and Queen, who had watched Jasper and Essie grow up together, constantly bickering and fighting, couldn't help but feel a little confused about the sudden air of positivity between the two. However, they decided to take it as a  plus. Meanwhile, Jasper played his role as necessary. In her own way, Essie had forced him into the very truce that he had refused her the night before, even if it only lasted momentarily. "I look forward to it." He said in response to her question about the time they would spend together. It wasn't a lie. He did look forward to it, though not in the way that his parents may have expected. His eyes took on an interesting purple color as he spoke, but he was looking down into his plate, making it nearly invisible.

"When her hand fell on his, his fingers spread, causing hers to fall into the gaps between them. This was odd, but their performances were convincing. "I wouldn't miss it." He said, before his parents had the opportunity to answer. Their schedule wasn't terribly hectic that day, but starting the next day, preparation for the ball would begin. They would be expected to rehearse and perfect a dance together to showcase to all those who attended once the announcement was made. They would be fitted for clothes, and prepped for what to say... The upcoming days would be a pain.. Especially if they had to keep playing nice for the crowd...

"Of course," she replied, nodding her head to Jasper.

His glare didn't phase her but she didn't return it with a snide comment or a sarcastic grin either. He could continue in his childlike behavior, but she wasn't in the mood today.

"I'm sure he had a good reason for his absence. I know that my arrival was somewhat shocking to us both," she said.

When she realized that she was only helping his case, she smiled and reached over with her hand. She laid it on his shoulder as she beamed at him.

"Besides, we will have plenty of time together before and after the wedding. Right, Jasper?" she asked directly so that he would have to acknowledge her.

As they ate, she fell silent as she picked at the food on her plate. She forced herself to eat so to not offend the king and queen but the more she ate, the more upset her stomach became. Finally, she abandoned the plate and sipped on her wine as the others ate.

"I have a riding lesson soon," she said to his parents as she reached over and laid her hand upon Japser's in order to feign affectation. "Could Jasper join me? "

The King and Queen's expressions both turned to smiles when Essie walked through the door. Once she was seated, she thanked them for allowing her to dine with them. "Not at all! Yo're family!" The Queen insisted. "Besides," The King chimed in. "It's the least we could do after Jasper acted so irresponsibly yesterday. Isn't that right, son?" On the inside, Jasper scoffed, but his expression was apologetic.  Dark green and orange clashed in his irises as he spoke to the Princess with the greatest of eloquence. "My humblest apologies for being inconsiderate of your time. I hope that you can find it within your heart to forgive me."

With his face toward Essie, and facing away from his parents, he shot the Princess a challenging glare. She couldn't shoot him down like she would if they were alone, but her pride wouldn't let her give him the satisfaction of winning either. Even in the face of his parents, he had won. It was then thatthe help brought out a large breakfast feast of (whatever midieval people ate for breakfast.)Jasper would then turn, and begin his meal with perfect etiqquete. Despite Essie's beliefs, he had learned plenty in their classes as a kid. He simply knew how to turn it on and off.
