The headmaster wasn't surprised when Winter proved that her first priority, before even her own status at the school, was the wellbeing of the student that the two girls had been bullying. He folded his hands on top of the desk and leveled his eyes with Winter's. "The medical team gathered her as we were leaving. I'm afraid I don't have access to that information just yet. For now, we need to discuss your part in all of this."

He sighed as his computer pinged. After a few clicks, he pulled up an email containing pictures from the scene of the fight. "Winter, you've never shown signs of aggression at the Academy, not even when you were being bullied yourself." He turned the screen so that she could see the pictures. Blood was splattered around the ground, along with shards of ice, which were indicative of Winter's involvement. "But this is more than just defending another student Winter, this is Carnage. What happened out there?" In his voice was clear concern. He seemed more genuinely worried than angry. If this was some sort of explosion of pent up aggression, than the deeper issue needed to be addressed, or it would surely happen again. The Headmaster was well aware that Winter had taken a leave after the death of her father. It was highly probable that that was at the core of the issue. An attendant was already contacting Soraya. This wasn't something they could leave her parents out of...

----------------------------------------------------------

In the medical wing, Aiko lay unconscious. Her torso was almost completely bandaged. She was covered in bruises, and had three **** ribs, but none of her injuries were life threatening. Rumors of the incident had already passed around the school. Feelings of sympathy for Aiko were common among the students, even those who had picked on her. Those girls had gone too far. But the feeling that was even more prominent among the student body was fear; Fear of Winter in particular. That she could do such damage to two students at once! The whole campus was talking in hushed whispers, as if she could turn a corner at any moment.  The winds of change were just beginning to blow at Siryon Academy. And for now, no one could know which direction they would lead everyone...

The headmaster drew out the silence as he inspected her file. She knew what he would find, nothing. Not even a failed or late assignment. Still, she remained silent, allowing him to find out for himself. When he did speak, she would lift her gaze to meet his levelly with a blank expression.

The 'bully' from last year was just that. He had been nothing more than an annoyance who no longer was around to torment her.

Winter did not answer him right away. She was too busy asking herself the sane question. Flashes of the fight played out in her mind, painting a horrific scene, but they were only a few pieces of a puzzle. The frenzy she had lost herself in had scared as well as intrigued, her. It had felt so amazingly wrong.

"Is Aiko okay?" she asked, bypassing the question altogether.

This was not like her. She who hardly glanced up from a book and never liked to fight, was now thirsty for vengeance and undermining authority. What was perhaps the most alarming out of it all, was that none of it bothered her. She numbed to the feeling of losing herself. It was as though she had been instructed her whole life on how to swim, but now as the waves collapsed over her, all she could do was drown.

Her lips twitched as she tilted her head slightly in a quizzically manner. She doubted they would expel her, but that did not mean they would not. The extent of the girls' injuries would certainly contribute to his decision. However, if her head could get smashed into a beverage machine by an upper classmate for simply breathing, without him facing any repercussions, she did not see herself getting expelled.

What if she did not get expelled? Would she be able to guarantee no other fight would occur?

She lowered her eyes upon thinking the question.

Aiko's assailants were ruthless! She coughed up blood as one kicked her in the gut. With her nerves impaired, she was little more than a normal human, being jumped by two powered individuals. She wondered when the girls would get bored and leave her alone, when a shield of ice suddenly covered her body! Looking through the surface of the ice, she could see that Winter had been her savior!

But she too, was incredibly brutal! Aiko had watched Winter's matches before. This wasn't her. Was it because they had teamed up to attack her? No, that didn't matter! This had to stop! Aiko didn't want Winter getting in trouble for fighting her battles for her. "Sen...pai..." She passed out just as she saw the paramedics approaching.

------

In his office, the headmaster sat across from Winter. It was rare that he involved himself in student affairs, but this was definitely a special case. For several moments, he was silent. He simply flipped through Winter's file, inspecting it as if searching for a speck of dust.

"You have quite the impressive file, Ms. Ochoa..." He finally spoke up. "Stellar grades, excellent performances, and no disciplinary actions to speak of." He continued flipping pages as he complimented her.

"There are several instances of you dealing with a bully in your first and second year." He said as he reached the end. "But even then you acted with inhuman restraint."

He put her file down on his desk and looked at the girl over the top of his glasses. "So you want to tell me what happened out there?"

Lunch would be over soon and Aiko was no where to be found. Perhaps she had forgotten, but it seemed unlikely given how excited she had been yesterday when Winter had invited her to eat lunch. It didn't make sense. There was a sickening sensation in her stomach of dread as she abandoned her belongings to search for the girl. If she found her, she feared the girl may suspect her being too clingy. What person would search for someone they had just met, only because they were late to lunch?

She was thinking of a proper excuse to give Aiko when she found her being tormented by two lower classmen. They were beating her senseless as she just sat back and let them. Something wasn't right with Aiko.

Upon witnessing the small, defenseless girl at the brunt of a brutal attack for no apparent reason, rage overtook Winter.

The wind changed direction as the air turned ice cold. All within a matter of seconds, Winter attacked the two girls with absolutely no restraint. An icy shield covered Aiko, sheltering her more so from Winter's attacks than the girls.

Despite the lower class students having the upper hand in numbers, Winter had no problem handling both at once. There was very little Winter was aware of in her anger induced state. It was as if her voice of reason and awareness had been extinguished. Her mind worked quickly, but she moved mainly out of instinct. Only the bloodthirsty voice penetrated her mind.

"Disable them from moving.
"

Winter moved effortlessly through the air and quickly brought the girls to their knees without even touching them. If they were able to do what they did to Aiko, they might do the same to her. Ice and blood hit the ground around her before her mind fell into a pool of darkness once more.

"Make them aware you are stronger."

Flashes of blood and fists. More darkness.

"Make them pay."

A scream cut short by ice. Nothing made sense in the darkness, but the rage felt good to unleash.

"Now, do what to them what you and Calyx did to Ember."

Shock dissolved the darkness instantly like a rubber band snapping after being wound too tightly. She dropped the heavy weight in her arms and a moan responded. Winter gazed down at the two girls and instantly felt sick.

When she looked back up, she found that the other students and staff were gathered around her, watching her. An instructor came forth and inspected the two girls and then yelled something.

Her ears were ringing much too loud to make sense of what people were saying. Suddenly, a hand grabbed her wrist and pulled her away from the scene. She did not recognize the person guiding her, only that he clearly was not a student.

After a few minutes of walking, she found herself sitting in an office. It was the first time she sat in an office without being handed an awarded or commended for an achievement.

The next day, Aiko was super excited about lunch for the first time. Dressed in a cute top and pants that she could still wear to class and be active, she walked out to meet Winter. She had gathered her food and brought some of her homework, just in case. She didn't understand why Winter had taken an interest in her, but she was more than willing to accept it without question.

She was making her way to the field with a smile on her face when two girls from her class approached, blocking her path. "What are you so happy about?" The taller girl asked, looking down on the shorter Japanese girl. Her smile faded immediately.

"Nothing." He said, releasing a heavy sigh. "Can you please move? I'm on my way to meet someone. Can you move please?" The girls obliged, and moved out of her way, but just as Aiko was walking by, the girl who had spoken swung her arm for Aiko's throat. With a roll of her eyes, Aiko dropped her things, and caught the girls arm. With fluid motions, she chopped her in the side and bent the arm into an unnatural position behind her back.

It was at this point that the other girl jumped in, preparing to claw Aiko's exposed back. Reaction without hesitation, Aiko pushed the first girl away, and turned to block the oncoming attack, taking only a small scratch to her arm before pushing the second girl back with an open palm strike to the chest.

But something wasn't right. Only a few seconds had passed when Aiko's vision went blurry. The world always seemed to be moving in slow motion to her, but suddenly, things were moving so fast! She struggled to maintain her balance as both girls approached once more. "Got you, ****!" the smaller girl said, waving her nail as Aiko, who realized that she had been hit with some sort of nerve impairing toxin. "And they say she's unbeatable." The taller girl said. Aiko barely had time to cover her head before both girls wailed on her at the same time. But even in the midst of her beating, Aiko could only hope that Winter wouldn't leave in response to her tardiness.

It was evident that the girl was holding back. The expression in her gaze was one that reminded Winter of the one an opponent wore as they hesitated. It was usually the last expression before that of disappointment took over when she took advantage of their hesitation and made the winning strike. Suddenly, she was well aware of how power could easily take over a person. Like a snake, it attempted to slither in disguised as triumph carrying with it a sense of unworldly authority and invincibility. Not that she cared to obtain any sort of recognition or position. Really, she was satisfied alone. Unlike many other introverts, Winter was not shy, rather she did not squander time with idle talk nor was she one to compromise herself to appeal to people.

Upon hearing her answer, Winter shrugged, matching the girl's indifference with a small smile.

"Well, since neither of us has anyone to sit with, why don't why sit together for lunch tomorrow? I'll meet you here. Have a good day, Aiko," she said, before getting up and leaving the girl where she sat.

-

The next day, Winter kept her word and ate out on the field again, waiting for the girl to join her. During the time alone, she made herself eat the apple and listen to the crunching of her teeth penetrating the fruit's skin. The silence was deafening.

Winter's answer was satisfying. But it did pose yet another question; One Aiko chose not to ask. Aiko had been right about her strength. Winter was different from the others. But it wasn't because of something she was lacking, like Aiko. It was something she had that the others didn't. Something Aiko was looking for, but knew not how to name.

When her question was returned, Aiko had thought of a million ways to answer it by the time the final word slipped from Winter's lips. She had weighed each option and the likely responses, and chosen the best one. Even so, Aiko had to remind herself to allow the appropriate pauses into the conversation. Since she came up with responses at an unnaturally fast pace, it was easy create an unnatural pace for conversation. "I suppose I just don't have anyone to sit with." She said, indifferently. At least, she tried to sound indifferent.

It was true that Aiko was shy and quiet naturally. But that didn't mean she disliked people, or interaction with others. The students here were simply corrupted by their strength! They were cruel, and seeked someone to enforce that power over. Aiko had been chosen to be that person. That was her role. And it would be dangerous to fight that. She was glad that Winter came to sit with her. It was the most comfort she had felt since arriving at the Academy. But even so, she had no intention of laying the burden of her problems on the Draconian's shoulders.

She did well to focus on the task in front of her despite the girl sitting beside her. It helped that the course work was far less advanced than that she was already studying. Her fingers moved in accordance to her thoughts. Soon, the page was nearly filled. Despite her ability to retain knowledge well, her penmanship could use some work. As long as it was eligible, no teacher would bother to complain.

It took the girl several minutes to speak again and when she did, more of her language slipped out. Winter did not mind it. Her least favorite subject to study was foriegn languages, but she had a small understanding of the Japanese.

When Winter had glanced up from her work, the girl was sitting in a shameful manner with her eyes glued to the ground. She thought over the question and shrugged nonchalantly, hoping to relieve the girl of her stress.

"I do not pretend to be something I'm not to satisfy the need for interaction," she answered, watching the girl. "And what about yourself? Why sit apart from everyone else?"

Winter closed her notebook. This was the most she had talked to anyone since her return. Senrei was now gone and she was not sure where he had gone. They had spoken before of his plans, but she had never thought to enquire of where his destination was located. Perhaps it was for the best. Fate had a funny way of working everything out in the end.

It wasn't unlike any other day.  Aiko had performed phenominally in her morning tactics and combat classes,  and now sat alone at lunch,  dreading her afternoon classes.  She had grown accustomed to being alone and had no problems with it. It was being around other students that she feared.  They were cruel.  And though it was doubtful that any of them could physically harm her on their own,  she didn't hold any of them above a group attack.

Aiko was just finishing her meal when she saw Winter heading her way.  Aiko liked Winter,  but not in the way everyone was saying. She liked Winter because she was different from the others.  She wasn't mean,  or rude.  Aiko felt like they were similar.  Top ranking loners, who kept to themselves.  She also felt that Winter,  much like herself,  was combating an inner pain that she shared with no one.  But despite that,  Winter stood tall and strong.  For that reason,  Aiko admired,  and looked up to Winter.

Aiko expected the white haired Draconian to pass through the field and had to the training field.  She quickly calculated bet trajectory to pass straight by her though,  and her gaze dropped to the ground.  She could feel her hay beating through her chest when Winter stopped. Surely she was going to say something about the rumors going around!  This was the worst thing ever!  Aiko braced herself as Sinter sat down,  preparing to be scolded.  But instead,  Winter just spoke to her!  She even used her name!

"H-Hi, Winter-senpai." Aiko's Japanese heritage was evident in both her accent,  and her use of honorific titles,  "senpai" being a title loosely translated to "upperclassman." It was a title that signified respect,  one that none of the other students were awarded. A light blush colored her face as she continued to look at the grass, awaiting her lecture.  But it never came.  Instead,  Winter went about doing her homework as if this were a regular event!

Aiko wished desperately that she had an assignment to work on,  so that she didn't have to just sit awkwardly in the grass next to Winter. But all she had was an empty plate. For minutes that felt like eternities, she remained motionless,  before finally looking at Winter and speaking up. "Ano.." another Japanese slip.  Equivalent to the word "um" in English.  "Senpai? Why do you easy lunch alone? " she regretted the words as soon as they escaped her lips. They were an invasion of privacy far beyond her right.  Her eyes fell to the ground once more. If only she had the power to disappear!

She pressed the pencil eraser to her lips as she scanned the document for any grammatical errors. As usual, there was not any to be found so she placed the paper securely in a binder and went on to the next assignment. Days dragged on like this. If her mind was not occupied with something, she would revert back into a comatose state. She was bordering exhaustion after long nights spent slaving over homework or practicing a new technique. It was better than the alternative.

Sometimes while reading, she would hear her father's voice of Ember's faint laughter as she had at home while snuggled into a secret place where she would read without being disturbed. At those times, she would go out and train until the voices dissolved.

Suddenly, the bedroom door opened, startling her. Her roommate murmured an apology, but Winter shrugged it off before gathering her things and leaving the room. It was nearly time for lunch anyways.

Down in the lunch area, kids were talking and getting their food like every other day. And as usual, no one batted an eye when Winter cut in line to grab a quick apple and sat in her corner furthest away from the crowd. As she ate, she continued to work on the assignment she had began doing before her roommate had walked in. While she worked, she listened to voices around her.

The group closest to her was busy talking about a first year student: Aiko. She had seen her before, but she had not paid much attention. The girl was visibly abnormal with no powers to speak of, but Winter did not doubt her ability to prove to be a good opponent.

However, the group did not share the same opinions as Winter. She ignored the gossip, focusing on the paper in front of her until her name was spoke. With that, she looked up and listened as they talked about Aiko's crush on her. It was an absurd notion, however the fact that they noticed Aiko watching her was intriguing.

She picked up her things once again and went out to the field. As suspected, Aiko was there, eating lunch. Winter glanced around. No one bothered to disturb the lone girl. No, instead they succumbed to gossip.

Without asking permission, she sat beside her and pulled out her notebook.

"Hello, Aiko," Winter said, granting her a friendly smile before going back to writing her assignment.

Aiko was something of an odd child in the Academy. A first year student, she excelled in the physical aspects of her classes, Battle, and physical training came to her naturally, and she performed well in tactical lessons. But she was an outcast when it came to the powers course. This was because she had no supernatural abilities to speak of!

It wasn't that Aiko had no special abilities. It was simply that they didn't extend beyond her physical being. Aiko's power was in the way her brain operated. It processed, and reacted to information and stimuli at nearly 1000 times the rate of your average human. As a result, her reflexes were quite literally perfect; Because she didn't have to rely on reflexes. She could consciously react to any stimuli in  a nanosecond! On top of that, she was well versed in over a dozen different martial arts! When it came to physical combat, she was unmatched by any in her class. Some second year students had even attempted to spar with her and only ended in defeat!

Despite this, Aiko had made no friends in the Academy. She was shunned for her lack of powers. It was widely decided amongst the student body that she had no powers, and was only accepted because she could fight well. Aiko spent all of her time alone. She ate lunch in her room, or alone in the field. She never spoke to anyone, but many students had caught her stealing glances at a third year student. Ironically enough, the top third year student, Winter Ochoa. Rumors quickly spread that Aiko had a crush on her, because she was also a loner. Aiko never made any effort to combat the claims...

Winter carried on in her studies, finding that the ones which intrigued her before varied from the ones that did now. Before everything, she had no interest in sparring classes, but now she could not get enough of them. Her father's death had eliminated her reserve and awakened something daring within her.

Throughout her time there, she quickly climbed to the top of her classes. Her wits along with her increasing skills in combat, made her a force to be reckoned with. More than that, she bonded with her dragon like nothing before.

She was always forcing herself to keep busy; to keep distracted. Any time she was alone in the silence without anything to keep her mind preoccupied, her mind would start to return to the day everything changed. One night, she had had a nightmare and she woke up to discover that she had nearly released an apocalyptic ice storm on the school campus. Aside from that, she had been doing really well- so she chose to believe.

Winter put her hand out a few inches in front of his nose, slowly, palm up, to show that she did not mean him harm. After a second, she scooped him up gently into her arms. Despite having little sleep and the being drained still from the previous night, she was still able to think clearly.

What she lacked in breasts, she made up for with sharp intellect. Sometimes this resonated well with her, others, she was oddly envious of the curves that all the other girls her age was starting to get, but she was deprived of.

She tip toed out the door and into the hallway before sitting him down on the floor, not knowing what he wished to do from there.

Small white ears twitched when Winter's hand found it's way between them. Black eyes opened and surveyed his surroundings. It didn't take long for the Fox cub to recall the events of the night before, and the potential danger he was in. It wasn't likely that Winter's roommates would recognize Senrei in this form, but after the episode the day before, it was possible that they could draw the connection. He stood to his feet and looked up at Winter, who seemed to be having some sort of difficulty with her hair. This was a struggle Senrei was unfamiliar with, but he assumed it was a "girl thing" and left it at that.

The light of the moon had shone down on Senrei through the window, recovering quite a bit of energy for him. But it wasn't the same as being under direct sunlight. He was still not to confident in his physical condition. He looked down at the floor, and it looked like quite a jump for a cub with damaged front legs. He whimpered slightly, wishing to get down and escape, but unable to do so.

Winter stirred just as the sun was beginning to rise over her bedroom window. She ached. It felt like someone had taken a hammer to her limbs. Biting her lip to keep from crying out in discomfort, she sat up and nearly knocked a ball of fur off of her bed. She rubbed her eyes sleepily.

When she opened them again, she figured out that the ball of fur was actually a fox and the fox was really Senrei.

Carefully to avoid startling him, she petted him between his ears. Her roommates would soon wake up and she feared that they may see him.

"Sen," she whispered.

Before he could respond to her prompting, she hurriedly fixed her hair. At least she tried to, but there was so much her fingers alone could do with wild bed-hair.

When Winter collapsed,  Senei instinctively reached out to catch her. His arms weren't broken anymore,  but they were still in a lot of pain and the added weight caused him woo wince and hiss. There was no way he could lift her in his condition.  But he couldn't leave her out in the open either. There was only one option.

Senrei gathered a seed from behind his ear, and using energy he didn't really have,  turned it to a bed of vines to carry Winter.  He retrieved her key from her person,  and opened her door,  the vines emitting a mild sleeping gas to ensure that her roommates didn't awaken. Once she was placed safely on her bed,  the vines evaporated into oxygen that would circulate the room.

But then the fox avatars vision began to blur.  No! He couldn't pad out there! Being caught in the girls dorm was grounds for expulsion.  But taking even a step was proving beyond his capability. In a last dish effort to not be laid out on the ground when her roommates awakened,  he reverted to his fox form.  The small cub would curl up in a ball at the foot of Winter's bed.  All he could manage

Winter did not open her eyes or lift her head at the sound of his voice. She was barely able to stand, but even then, she would miss a few steps as she kept nodding off. Once they had made it out of sight of the nurse, she mentally cut the invisible chord that tied them together. The sudden stop of the loss of energy made her head throb.

She resorted to biting her lip to keep from groaning due to the sudden pain and increased exhaustion.

As they went, she thought back to Jake and his incredible behavior. There was something going on that they could not see. She had once read a passage in a book that reminded her of it all. Also, it reminded her of her mother...

When they had finally reached her dorm, Winter sighed. Her hand reached out to brace the doorframe, or at least she had commanded it to do so, but it did not obey her. Instead, she lost complete control of her limbs and thrown into sleep.

Senrei had hoped to be able to discuss the matter with Jake, but it was clear that Winter had reached her limit. "Just think on that. We'll discuss it later." He said, his voice as calm as always. Jake had tasked Winter with returning the nurse to her station, but Senrei didn't care about that. The woman would undoubtedly lose her job after allowing both of her patients to escape anyway. He turned to Winter once Jake was gone. "You've worn yourself out." He told her. "Let's get you back." It was late enough that he was certain no officials would catch him walking the campus. He wrapped a weak arm around her waist, and helped her to her feet. He walked her past the unconscious nurse, and toward her dorm. On the way, he thought of what Jake had said. They didn't cause him to blush or fluster. They instead made him curious. What he felt toward Winter; could it be defined as attraction? In his mind, he didn't think so. After all, he felt no immediate need to mate with her,(though he was certain they could create incredibly powerful offspring.) But he did feel a connection with her that he had never experienced before. It was evident in the fact that he wanted to ensure her safety, despite his sad condition. Perhaps that was what "Friendship" meant. All of it was new to Senrei, so he couldn't be sure. And something prevented him from asking. Another new occurrence. This school year was certainly turning out to be an interesting one.

Winter's eyes had closed and her breathing had became light with fewer exhales, but she was still awake. As Jake spoke, she allowed her mind to wander since trying to distinguish the meanings of his words was too much of a task.

Then, Sen spoke. His voice was much closer, therefore louder than Jake's. The contrast in sound stirred her, causing her eyes to flutter open momentarily before they closed once again as a sigh slipped from the sleepy girl.

His inquiries were curious. Jake hardly seemed like one to care about his teammates, but then, he did care about winning.

Winter's hair fell over his shoulder as she turned her head to get a more comfortable position. It was so hard not to fall asleep especially when her energy was slowly being drained. She knew it would be much more peaceful not to fight it now. Winter yawned again, then bit down on her lip, willing herself to stay awake.

Grateful?

Senrei's head tilted to the side in response to Jake's strange response. What did he have to be grateful for? Jake lost the match when he forfeit. But even if he hadn't, he would have lost the match in less than a minute anyway. What had he done that Senrei should be grateful for? Did he think he had somehow prevented Senrei from experiencing even greater injuries, or even death? No. Jake was Senrei's partner. He couldn't underestimate him so greatly. Even if Jake's final attack had managed to permeate Senrei's defense, he had a second method already planned out. Jake had to have assumed that. So what then?

Senrei could only come to one conclusion. Jake was a creature of great pride. It was possible that he had convinced himself that his forfeit had somehow saved Senrei, and thus, his loss was voluntary upon that premise. Senrei couldn't be positive that was the reason, but he had a feeling that was it. Senrei wasn't like Jake. He didn't need to have his ego stroked, so he didn't combat Jake's statement. Instead, he leaned his head back against the tree and allowed it's nutrients to feed him energy until Jake's next question rang through his mind.

"Any more questions, genius?"

"I do have more questions, in fact." Senrei answered calmly, keeping an eye on a resting Winter. He didn't want to keep her too much longer. If she lost consciousness, Jake and Senrei were both screwed. "Did our match give you any insight on ways we could improve our teamwork in battle?" Senrei was sure that was the ultimate purpose of the exercise. It was the reason everyone had to fight against their own partner. Senrei had thought of several ideas, but he wasn't strong enough to test them just yet. Also, he didn't want to keep Winter stuck there, discussing them. But he wanted to know if Jake had been thinking about it. And if not, he wanted him to start. His eyes trailed to Winter once more. He also wanted to settle whatever issues those two had gonig on, but he knew it wasn't his place. It was something Winter would have to take care of, when she was ready...
