Upon such a close inspection of this second man, she found herself gripped even more by Shenir; this supposed magi hunter was narrow in the shoulders compared to the larger one doing his best to kill the humour that threatened to bubble to the surface, standing just a few feet away, and if it wasn’t for the facade the shorter one had already put up, Thalia might’ve enjoyed his company.

Turning over to Tally, she watches the same look of fear that was on Thana’s face paint itself into her eyes, the lighter dog growling deeply. Just then, the humid air coagulated and wove itself into the shape of a woman; she looked old and worn out and though it took the young elf a minute to realise who she was, swaying left to right in the air without touching the ground - Thalia still  bowed her head respectfully, acknowledging her presence the moment she had made herself present.

It takes a moment for her dogs to calm down, Thalia watching proudly as they mimic her actions and just as quickly as she had appeared, before the gentlemen could even grasp what or who they were looking at, Lady Ava disappeared into the wind as if she had never been there, as if she was just a figment of their imagination, playing a cruel game.

“You two, and then our Lady, and that stupid wench. .” she spoke more to herself than her companions, words turning into a quiet little mumble before she turns away from the new man, to face the one whose thoughts she read like a book; the ones he allowed her to anyway. A look of relief washes over her features for a moment when he begins to explain what he had used the flames for, smiling softly to express her gratitude.

Tobacco. To inhale, and exhale. And to occasionally choke on. Her thoughts would now peek through the curtain of his mind, and wonder through, like a running current, a smirk on her lips as she watched him silently, waiting for his reaction, silently hoping he didn’t give their little secret away.

She turns her attention to the man as he spoke, furrowing her brows while contemplating his question, before she walked back to him, floating so she could look into his eyes, and he could see hers clearly as she responded in a calm, almost ethereal voice, “the lack of fire can’t be ignored, that is for sure but more so, this little mask of yours. I see you, you’re right here, but this beard, and those eyes,” she points to his beard, and then his eyes, changing in colour, “they’re not you. Are you too much of a coward to show the real you or is there another explanation?”

His will to hide his real form might not even have an explanation, but it was a threat to Thalia, even if it was done in good faith. It was quite possible that in the years he had lived, which she imagined would be less than her, that he might have acquired enemies.

Maybe his mask was his protection like she was made to protect the forest.

She flies over to Shenir, pointing to where he had started the fire.

“And how would one turn the flames off if they didn’t need it anymore?”

'You forget that the woods are more my home than most creatures that live here...' But he was met with the same cryptic answers as always. Wizards of all kinds rubbed him the wrong way with their constant verbal dancing, sometimes even their physical dancing. 'Finding you, with or without the markings, would be child's play, but it wasn't my intention. For my reasoning for being here, there had been reports of things about here.'

At the emergence of another black dog, the horse started to prance about; a hand resting on the side of its neck to calm it, stroking the horse gently. Tristan could feel himself getting irritated at the situation; already two of those had frightened his horse and not a lot did that, given the situations it had been through with the Rahl.

But he was brought back as the old mage was interrupted by the slight figure of a woman, naked; the Rahl cocked an eyebrow at the inhuman woman. 'Not to be trifled with? My, you wound me, Shenir. Have I ever done you wrong? Or is it that you merely respect my abilities as such? I am not as powerful as you make me out to be.'

However, Tristan studied the elf as she in turn did the same; he scoffed a bit at the singular word but shrugged it off. He'd never call himself interesting, though perhaps to some foreign entity he might be; though, aside from his cousin who lay long dead and a limited few in his family, he was the only War Wizard, an oddity from thousands of years ago when magic and wizards were far more bountiful than today. He had seen plenty of such creatures in his travels on the run for so many years so her ilk meant little to him, aside from her being so far from her native land. He looked askance at Shenir, pondering; stroking the beard in that thought process before dismissing the idea.

As the elf woman looked upon him though, she'd see differences in his appearance up close; his eyes shifting different hues; the features not quite right; even the beard seemed to be off. In truth, Tristan often used this guise upon traveling, an old habit that never failed him in the slightest, especially as he perfected it over the years. A bit of Additive magic and he was someone else entirely, but he didn't show off his magical disguise by changing or adding, even though the idea of startling even Shenir would be worth it.

It had been so long since he had last seen himself in the mirror; everyone knew he was Rahl with some magical ability, Shenir perhaps knowing more than he should, but for the moment, the magi hadn't sold him out. It was odd to trust someone with his identity, an identity that was a death sentence back so many years ago; the fact that it was gone with the former D'hara emperor's death meant there was little for Tristan to fear these days, but he was not exactly friendly with the main bloodline, nor did he want to be. Although, the Empress was a sight to behold. He had the pleasure of meeting her a handful of times, but she was an intimidating presence as well as she was beautiful.

It excited him in ways he didn't know existed.

His eyes narrowed however at Shenir, the laughter that threatened to bubble forth, but his words were for the woman. 'What do you find less than impressive about my person, auphe? My lack of fire? Or is it my person itself that you find so... lacking?'

His questions were filled with any sort of self-consciousness, but a general sense of curiosity. There weren't many women that found him unimpressive, but given that she was more elf than human, perhaps she didn't find the same qualities endearing as his female counterparts. Not that he would sweat the opinion of a singular person, or even a multitude of them.

So it was the Rahl after all. As the warrior made his presence known before Shenir, The taller man looked down upon the man. Even given the disparity of size, Shenir taller by a head length and more barrel chested than the lanky muscular build of the Rahl, He knew this was not the fighter to trifle with on the open field.

“Tristan. You know more than I that a magi is exactly where he means to be when he means to be there.” Rahl was wary of his surroundings, and Shenir shuffled from one leg to the next as he lifted his staff and leaned it back against his shoulder, cradling the object in the nook of his arm to keep it balanced off the ground. “The better question is why a Warrior if D’hara wandering in the woods. Shouldn’t you be with the fourth column across the east pass? Obviously Horse has also lost his sense of direction.”

Shenir furrowed his brow and stared at the man before him. How could he now know why Shenir was in the middle of the woods? “I was sent ahead of the Seventh column to scout a path through the woods. I thought that’s how you found me, by my markings.” The furrowed brow turned into a deep squint as he watched the Rahl’s movements. Suspicious of the man’s intentions having strayed so far off his own path.

With his Final Question, Shenir scoffed and snorted with a small fit of laughter as he shook his head. “I’m where I need to be… You shou…” And then she dropped from the tree. Falling as quiet as a leaf in the wind and landing without so much as a crunch against the dirt. Even Shenir was impressed with the near perfect landing she had completed. He cocked an eyebrow and looked up, folding his arms across his chest as he judged the distance from the brank still swaying with her release. “Hrmm..”

He drew in a deep, heaving breath into his chest that caused his muscle to swell and released the breath through his nose in a long snort that seemed to go on for half a minute. “I’m glad to know the stories of Elves are true to a T it seems.” Shenir chewed on his tongue as she made reference to his telepathic thought to her, visibly shifting again to another leg as he watched the new dog, bigger than the last, bound into the open area and join them. “By The Old Gods…”

There was quite an audible sigh from his lips as he looked to Rahl, pondering how to explain cold to a  creature that bounded through the damned dark, damp forest stark naked as the day she was born, or created, or however elves came into being. The lore was never very clear. But Shenir knew ramblings of a man with a quill never really told the whole truth. In fact, he was more suspicious of the man with a quill than the bastard with a sword.

“Well, at least you know they are called flames, my dear. And there are a great many reason one creates them and how they create them.” Shenir smirked as the woman wandered over to Rahl and began walking around him. The resulting snicker and shake of his head ringing the tiny bells through his braid. “I created it because it’s easier to light tobacco with a flame than with a staff. Also, some of the less careless Fae choose to remain away from things they don’t know.”

Shenir looked to the Rahl and his smirk only grew with her inspection. “Yes. The Magi hunters of D’hara are just that. Interesting.” His smirk pursed at his lips as he held back as best he could the mocking laughter that threatened to fly from him.

While the Magi of the Towers and the Rahl had been cautious allies, many of the Councils of the Towers considering the Rahl apostates, the lower ranks of Magi who met them usually found their personalities favorable. Shenir mat not have like this Rahl the best, but he was better than some of his other family.

What had always fascinated Thalia about the humans is how they reject other entities for being different and dangerous but are also simultaneously thrilled by those who are not their type; the man had that look on his face, the same look all men have when they see her in full; their eyes filled with a desire she couldn’t identify. Reaching the shade of the budding fig tree about halfway up already, she stops to look down; there was an oddness about the day, too many men in the forest, too many unpredictable men with too many questions. Her eyes looked to Thana, who seemed to be gripped by a fear that was unwarranted but so powerful she almost looked ready to run on impulse, though it was probably the absence of Tally, her other hound causing the stir in her, rather than the foreign man, now joined by another.

This one also wore clothes, and he came with his own pet, a horse who by the looks of it, was agitated by her hound. For Thalia, having grown up in the forest, the first thing she had learnt was camouflage, her enhanced senses allowed her to morph into and deceive rather easily, however, she wasn’t threatened by the men, more so, intrigued. For a moment she listens to them, before rolling her eyes and throwing herself off of the branch she was balanced on. Rather than being sloppy with her fall, her body moved gracefully through the air, landing on her feet so lightly and elegantly, she didn’t make a sound. Thana runs to her side, bending a little to lick her ear before she acknowledges the new man.

“So you're the man who shouldn’t be trifled with.”

Looking over at Shenir, she shrugs, “not that impressive really, but you know what was?”

Just as Thalia points to the ground to indicate what she meant, her other hound, Tally runs past the horse, standing at her other side, slightly bigger than Thana, but lighter in colour; her fur looked like honey in the moonlight. She greets the dog, feeding him a fig she had picked before her green gaze returns to Shenir. “Those orange flames, so do you mind telling me how you started it now? And for what reason?” Thalia didn’t feel the cold, nor the heat on her skin, hence her question. She walks over to the new man, examining him just as she had Shenir.

“Interesting.”

The weary hunter paused in his steps, the echo of magic cascading against him as he immersed himself within the strange influence. Friends, eh?

'Ah. So it is you, Shenir', the voice came from the battered man, a deep voice that spoke with authority. 'I was did not think you'd be out here, flirting with the woodland fae.'

Tristan Rahl stepped into the light as he spoke, clearly taller than the man before him, and his build offered him a far more intimidating posture; but there was paranoia that clung to him loosely; his eyes moving subtly about to take in everything. The horse behind him stomped its hooves in response to the black dog but a hushed word from the young Rahl calmed it.

'Are you lost? Nothing to be ashamed of, as I often find my own sense of direction fleeting, or rather, misleading. If not for Horse here, I'd probably be dead in a ditch somewhere long ago.' His tone was companionable, friendly; even his posture and unconscious gestures seemed to communicate that vibe rather easily. But there was a strain in his voice; a slight crease to the corner of his eyes.

Why in the gods would he be here? Middle of the forest? Shenir was competent but very of of the wizards, or Magi as he liked to call himself, ventured out this deep. Magic mushrooms? Some rare herb? Perhaps, given the Magi's inquisitive mind, but that remains to be seen. Given the black dog, there was perhaps a faery or something else just as magical running about. Black dogs were dangerous. Tristan frowned.

Tristan was more of a hunter, or warrior, than wizard; his magical abilities were par none but he used them mostly to enhance his already natural affinities for combat, but he was a not a man to be taken lightly. The Rahl had bested some of the most powerful wizard of his homeland in D'Hara. He was no longer frightened nor scared of anyone, though those years of his life were not forgotten and suspicion was always in his mind. It was a dark attitude to have and it isolated him from everyone, and everything, save his one friend: the gar, Grug, but Grug had left long ago. The frown turned more melancholic as he reminisced about his old friend who had saved his life more than Tristan could count.

'Do you need help finding your way back?'

A man’s desires hard pressed against the cotton trousers beneath his cloak as she stepped fully into the moonlight. It had been longer than a fortnight since he had been to town and fantasies had played at his mind in the long nights before. The shade cast from the moonlight against the leaves tickled her pale flesh and ample bosoms. ‘She is naught but a dream. A hallucination caused by the puffs of smoke and loss of oxygen to the brain’ the words flowing his head as she spoke, almost missing her refer to the rather large creature on her left side as her pet.

“Pet?” Shenir echoed. Almost unbelieving.

The beast was nearly five feet tall. Shenir need only bent slightly at the knees to be eye level with the monstrosity. He had not even seen Bull Mastiffs bread to that size of animal. A smirk played on his face as he watched the so called pet, its own eyes meeting his as he missed the woman come closer to him and almost be face to face with his person.

She flitted around him delicate as a feather coursing through the wind, So much that he didn’t hear a step until she spoke again, his diamond eyes casting down into hers. “An Elf? The gods I have seen all now… That explains…” He watched her reach for his bells, about to take one in her hand as he spoke. “A whole lo…” The both stopped. The sudden pull of light towards one point revealed the location of this bitter sweet feeling he had. Magic was a sacred thing, a signature for those who used it. Shenir stood, his staff now grasped in both hands as he watched the elf climb the tree. No, it was more of a tango of sorts the way she swung herself from branch to branch, deeper and higher into the massive growth. He spoke as she climbed higher, his words carrying to her while she moved.

“Shenir Dragor. Magi of the fifth tower.” He would not be joining the elf in the tree, as on better inspection and interpretation of the powers used, he recognized the Rahl. In response, the hound would not need to lead the stranger far, because Shenir would lift up his staff and tap it lightly on the ground, a wave of pale light casting over the area, erasing footsteps, but also sending out a signal to the other man that it was friends in this wood.

His voice seemed to appear in the Elf’s mind as he stood his full height and grumbled under his breath that this man had come so soon to the woods. “Stay in the tree. Do not come down until I give the clear, okay? This is not a man to be trifled with.” He spoke to her. While on the ground he grumbled under his breath to himself “Damn him. Come to find me lost?”

In Thalia’s world, at the days of the now old grandmother Willow, there used to stand in the heart of the forest, a large stone shrine, now burdened with aged evergreen so when the man talks of the forest -in which she had been witness to the track of many fatigued years evident in the border of its fluorescent grass- she scoffs, not in the most of the ladylike manners. For Thalia, she was an embodiment of the forest itself, she needn’t an invitation - it was her home. For a while she simply stares idly at the man, watching how the tip of his braid caressed the floor, furrowing her brows, unamused at all the trinkets and bells he carried in it. Her own hair reached just above her rear, and finally, after what seemed a century of listening to fatuous talk about monsters and beasts, she steps out from behind the leaf, the moonlight accentuating her slender bones, making her seem even smaller.

Her breasts were plump, and quite large for her frame, uncharacteristic of an elf, the hound at her side, even more so - the others were scared of Thana and as the dog comes to stand next to her, just a little shorter than the stranger before her, Thalia could see why. The black beauty was something that could descend upon and crush man if she wanted to.

“This,” she lifts her right leg for a moment, before letting her feet sink into the mud beneath her, “is my home, and she” again, she pauses, reaching out to her side to stroke the dog, “is my pet, Thana. As for me,” now, Thalia was comfortable enough to completely ignore the bounds of personal space, taking a few steps forward and craning her neck back to look up at him, “I’m an elf.” She takes another step forward until she’s close enough to examine the bells in his hair, reaching out to touch one but stopping halfway, eyes widening at the wave of nausea she’s showered with. It was clear to the dark blond that the man before her hadn’t identified the other presence among them, the magic playing in the air for but a second. Thalia had grown up to be the eyes and ears of the forest, however, and it didn’t get past her.

“Did you feel that?” She snaps at the man, before waving a hand at her hound, watching the dog run off into the woods as instructed to fish out whoever was among them. “There’s someone else here, come on.”

She had no idea whether or not inviting the man to hide with her was a good idea, but they needed a snare of some sort before her dog leads the stranger to them. Looking about, she fiddles with a few sticks, and after spotting the tallest tree around them, she begins to climb it, her bare body moving up the bark so elegantly, it looked like a dance of some sort, especially with the moon above them highlighting the few curves she did have.

“Who’re you anyway?”

She stops when she asks the question, looking down at the man on the ground from her spot, before continuing on up, not wasting her time waiting for a reply though she was very intrigued.

It was a day like any other autumn day. The wind was whisking away the decaying and dead leaves from the trees. In the light of the false dawn, the small side-road was occupied. The shifting of the gravel beneath leather boots broke the seemingly oppressive silence despite the more natural sounds; the ring of metal on stone added to the breaker of silence as the horse plodded alongside the stranger, the reins held in a hand that was brown from the sun, a hand that was scarred. The trespasser was a little taller than average with broad shoulders and a lean, athletic build that was hard with muscle; light, silver-blond hair shined in the false dawn lighting as the breaker of silence walked almost soundlessly. Forest green eyes, dark in color and bright with a sort of inner fire, were lit up with the passing of light rays within the forest canopy. A face high in cheekbone and formed a handsome face with sharp features. A few white lines marred the handsome face of the stranger with crude, garish slashes: these scars covered his arms and some of his upper body, rendering about twenty percent of his body in scar tissue. But the scars didn't detract from the handsome features but seemed to hand a more of handsome in a rough, roguish way. Even the air about the stranger was filled with confidence and a childlike glee that bordered on insane mischief.

As the light fell on the stranger’s attire, consisting of a cape and darkly colored shirt and pants and boots. A leather belt wound its way around the silence breaker's waist and buckled to this belt was a falchion and a few longknives and a pair of heavy, parrying gauche. The stranger, by the looking upon its face and further, its body, revealed itself to be, a man. A small smile played on the lips of the man as he walked in the peaceful, serene forest though his eyes tracked everything with barely a twitch. A bow and a quiver of arrows bounced slightly as he walked along, his trusty steed at his side.

The horse was holding most of the supplies, though it had lightened since the day of the journey and, for this, the horse was glad, though it would ever remain ignorant of the truth of the emotions within it. The horse held a few scars as well and carried two more swords: one a broadsword, the other a longsword. A few more quivers remained untouched by the man baring the need to check to the fletching. Pots and pans rattled in one of three of the packs the horse carried, a fourth carried by the man. The hair of the horse shone dully in the rising sun, revealing a salt-and-pepper kind of coloring; the horse was old but just as strong and healthy as it was a few years back, when it earned the scarring along its hide; a few teeth were missing from its mouth, one of its ears is torn to shreds and hardly works; the front hooves **** and chipped. But the horse was happy, content, for the most part as the warmth of the sun soothed aches in its joints.

The man sported a beard that was neatly trimmed, also salt-and-pepper in color and covering his neck, resting along his collarbones. The man himself wasn't old but his hair was prematurely greying but was not falling down, which the man was thankful for. He scratched at a cheek idly as he felt it itch and rubbed his nose afterwards. And here, the features and definition of the man and horse lost a hold on reality as shadows took them as they neared the darker, lightless parts of the forest trail in which he and the horse walked along.

The horse stomped its hooves at the sound of voices soon heard by the man himself.

Strange magical energies played at his gloved hands; the fingers cut off. One hand played with black lightning that drained light while the other played with bright sparks of fire before they vanished, whatever being that may be sensitive to such energies -and not many were due to the nature of such magical properties- would feel it for but a brief second.

Old habits, perhaps, instilled in the hunter from prior engagements.

He nearly choked on his smoke as the woman appeared from the woods, his body twisting and taking hold of his staff as he pointed towards the woman with a great bellow. “And where did…” But she interrupted him with a question about the fire. He stood there, more than a head-length above this woman, smoke still billowing from his mouth as he shook his head. “Wild children roam these woods, too? Rather nice of the forest to welcome such into her bossom.” He scoffed.

The bells in his hair sounded a chorus as the long braid wagged back and forth from his hip, brushing the forest floor as he brought his staff up into a less threatening position and resting against his body. He reached up and pulled the pipe from his mouth as he stared at this creature, child or otherwise, and watched as she simply covered herself with a leaf. He had not noticed before.

“Gods… The other take this place and its inhabitants. What manner of beast are you?”

“And what manner of monster is that?” He had taken notice of the hound just lurking in the background.

He continued to avoid her question about the flames, but instead tapped the tip of his staff against the tip of the fire and extinguished it completely, the void of heat instantly filled by the cold that hung to the trees. His full height truly gave way to his full body. Bulky muscular and built like a true tank. “And where do you inhabit?”

Two hours later, she strode through a swarm of fireflies with her dog at her side. She wanted above all to mother more trees, for the forest to be crowded with flora like it used to be, but like an old joke, she walked up the empty mountain pass, looking about as if she were seeking something she had lost. Her dog, standing taller than her moves forward all too suddenly, sniffing fanatically and when the hound jerks forward once more to run to and identify this foreign smell, Thalia pulls her back. Thana was a black dog, with bright green eyes and stood two feet taller than the young girl, who was four feet. The other animals in the woods always warned her against trying to tame such big hounds, threatening that one day they’ll get too hungry for their own good and eat her, limb by limb. Thalia wasn’t scared, though. They were loyal creatures.

The mist thickened in front of her but she carried on silently through the woods until she saw him, a big giant man, throwing twigs into the flames grandmother Willow had talked about seeing in her omen. I saw the green of our land turn to ash, burned by orange and red flames. As he fed this orange hue with twigs, it seemed to grow in size and intensify in colour. Her eyes widened as she watched him, the colour draining from her face, though her eyes stayed a vivid green. If this was the case, all they would need to do to destroy their land was to set one tree on fire. The flame would eat the woodland in a minute and when it dawned on her how easy it was, she decided to follow this man.

Maybe he’d lead her to the others, the witches, the filthy humans.

She followed him silently, Thana also following suit and keeping quiet. They both watched in awe as the man got worked up before she stepped out of the shadows, a big leaf covering her bare slender body. Why the humans wore clothes, the elves would never fathom, so she thought nothing of it, raising her brows as he continues on before finally parting her plump lips, hoping to catch his attention. If Thalia was anything, shy wasn’t one.

“How did you start it?”

“That red and orange flame, how did you start it?”

He sat against one of the trees. The rough bark digging imaginary holes in the cotton shirt he wore as it bristled the flesh and pushed deep into the muscles of his back. Shenir readjusted his position when the ache spread too deep into his back and found himself a sweet spot where the pressure released the tension. “What a time to be stuck in the woods…” A small fire burned before the man. Shenir fed the flame with small twigs and leaves, keeping it low and steady as he rested.

Shenir pulled a pipe from under his cloak at his side and placed the wooden tip in between his teeth as he fished inside his pack for the sweet tobacco he had obtained from a traveling merchant that passed by on the hidden forest path.

Shenir packed the tobacco into the pipe, using a pinch and then pushing it down with his thumb. He added soft packs until the bowl had filled to the brim and he placed the few shreds back into the leather pouch and cinched it up. He took the bag itself and placed it back among his various other travel items inside his pack.

Shenir was a large man. His broad shoulders almost spanning the old tree as his head sat well above a normal mans. His hair cascaded down his right side in a tight braid, laid with bells and other rings and trinkets.  His braid would brush the ground if he stood. At his full height of almost 6’ 4”. It was unusual for those of the magically adept realm to be his size, with his muscular build, and brawny strength. But it was not unheard of. His clear-cut diamond colored eyes glinted in the face of the fire as he now lit the match and sparked the tobacco. He took soft drags, careful to fill his lungs to the brim before releasing a column of smoke into the air. He took puffs ever so often, and began to blow rings through the twilight and into the leaves of the trees above.

Leaned against the tree on his left hand side was a gnarled staff. The long ironwood imbued with a magical crystal. That was set at the top. The sapphire gleamed with a clear, sky blue color. Around the crystal, almost protecting it, was a twist of the ironwood bark, forming a strange lattice pattern. The grey bark of the ironwood cast a supernatural glow into the shade behind where it rested.

Shenir knew this forest contained many things that were not of the human realm. But he was stationed here as a forward operator to scout out the forest for the next unit that moved through. He heard all sort of things move in the night as he laid awake thought about what was going on in the darkness around him.

Even now, he heard the crunch of leaves and other things about the forest and caught glimpses of faired skinned elves, or other fae as they ran through the trees. The most recent he almost followed, but she rushed by so fast, he never knew which direction she had vanished in and the footsteps were distant and gone before he had a chance to stand up and pursue.

He pondered everything now. His arm rested against his leg. The same hand gripped his pipe and pulled it away from his lips between breaths of smoke. The tendrils spewed down through the whiskers of his thick, dark beard, chest level, and rolled down his barrel chest and tight stomach to the ground and then out. And away from him. “Damn forest…” Something bumped behind him and he twisted, releasing a billow of smoke like a dragon before he learned it was nothing and just turned back around. “Damnable place…”

“THALIAAAAAAA!”

If Thalia’s legs could cover more ground any faster, her heart wouldn't be beating so harshly as she tracked along the soggy mud, crushing autumn leaves beneath her bare feet, the copper veins glistening as the sun set above her. Various eyes peeked over the horizon to see what had caused such a fuss, and when they realised it was her, the animals and faes alike shook their head, going back to whatever they were doing. The young girl takes a moment to compose herself, bending at the waist, the palms of her hands laid flat on her thighs as she breathes heavily, closing her eyes to block out the uninvited headache at the sudden jolt, her body not completely healed from practice before coursing on, both of her dogs roaring at her side.

When finally she’s met with the willow tree, she stops and gasps for air, letting her guard down before falling flat on her back onto a bed of leaves, burying herself in autumn. If it wasn’t for the duties that came along with being the eyes and ears of her land, she would stay in this spot and never leave the comfort it brought, the cosiness mother nature offered. Grandmother willow had been here much longer than she had, and would be here long after she was gone, and yet every night, as darkness came over their lands, Thalia wondered if she too saw the colour in the sky, that terrible colour of coal. As the tree began to talk her usual talk of wisdom, the girl sits up and stares at the black abyss that was Willows' eyes.

“Do you believe in omens, girl? I saw it, right before my eyes. I watched the green of our land turn to ash, burned by orange and red flames. Witches, dressed in black, like the night sky coming after our folk, feeding on our children. I saw blood, Thalia, a lot of blood, red ink soiling our white flowers.”

Thalia’s heart drops as she listens to the wise woman, her dogs irritated as if they too understood each and every word, shuffling and hopping up and down, getting their defences up. She reaches out, petting them, calming them both in the process before watching them sleep peacefully.

“Now more than ever, we will need you to be our eyes. We cannot afford to be weak, we do not have that luxury.”

And after such a long day, she knew that tonight, she wouldn’t sleep.
