Wan could hear the roars of excitement as the probending matches went on; he had no interest in such things himself, but he could appreciate the skill involved nonetheless. He paid for some snack that street vendor had out, was pleasantly surprised with the taste of it, and continued on his way.

The young firebender was uncertain about his destination, though he was sure Capital City wouldn't hold him for long, and wanted to find a master. Should that take him outside the city, so be it. As he walked towards the arena of the probending matches, mostly to immerse himself in the culture of his fellow people, the announcement came.

Strange people? Women and children?, his head swam with the idea of it. Strangers in strange attire outside his city?

Wan was no coward, and perhaps he would be able to find what he sought there. Grinning to himself, as his idea was rather brilliant, Wan started towards the scene, taking a few alleys and sidestreets to avoid the masses of people seeking their homes. He wished he was an earthbender, or at least a metalbender, for this reason.

Walking everywhere like this sucked.

After recently coming to terms with being the new Avatar, Zhara knew her training had to start somewhere, so she went to what was once the air temple outside of Capital City, where Master Tenzin began training Avatar Korra all those years ago. In the decades since, the air temple had become a hub for bending teachers of all backgrounds, supported from the shadows by The Order of the White Lotus. Upon arrival, the members of the White Lotus greeted Zhara, as is customary when receiving the Avatar for training, and suggested that while they were awaiting the arrival of her new advanced firebending teacher, she should begin studying the basics of the other three elements she needed to learn. So she took a the scrolls they gave her and began.

It had been a week, and Zhara was alone in her room, reading up on the techniques of the air nomads and trying to conjure up the tiniest bit of wind from her fingers, to no avail. She was becoming frustrated, even with her usual sunny disposition. Up until this point, she had successfully made pebbles and rocks come up out of the ground, and even correctly created ripples and whirlpools in the temple fountains; but trying to focus her chi to force a gust of air to appear was like pulling teeth. Zhara closed the scroll she was reading.

"I need a break..." she sighed, glossing quickly over her other reading materials before rising from her chair and moving to the side table behind her. "I know what will get me energized." she says, pulling a dumpling she had saved from lunch out of her pocket, warming it up in her hands, and plopping it into her mouth. "There HAS to be some good probending matches going on tonight!" She exclaimed mouth half-full, while rolling onto her bed.

The excitable sounds of a probending announcer's voice crackled into the atmosphere as she cut it on her radio. "--And it's the last stretch of the preliminary rounds for the Probending Championship, sponsored by the newly incorporated and less criminally inclined than its predecessor, Cabbage Corp Internationaaaaaaal! Now back to the match! The Tenku Tiger Hares and the Ferocious Fruit Bats are at each others throats! Now the Fruits Bats have the Tiger Hares on the ropes.... the Tiger Hares are giving it all they've got as they're quickly backed into the last ring..... but wait, what's this?! A quick thinking strategy by the Tiger Hares' earthbender has knocked one of the Fruit Bats out of bounds from the third ring! Amazing! The Tiger Hares might be still in the ga--" The announcer abruptly cut, and Zhara's radio crackled again, this time the sound was replaced by a loud announcement.

"ATTENTION CAPTITAL CITY! A large gathering of strange individuals dressed in black has gathered outside the city. Hundreds of Men, Women and children, as if from nowhere are gathered! Capital City Police is being dispatched to determine if this gathering poses any threat to the city! If possible, we urge citizens to remain indoors until a proper investigation has been completed!" The alert ended and turned to static before returning to the probending match. Zhara stared at her radio, stunned for a few moments before cutting it off and rising off of her bed.

"What the hell was that...?" She wondered. "Are the citizens really in trouble??" Zhara muttered, pacing in front of her bed. "I should probably stay where I am, despite wanting to help...." she kept pacing and muttering. Fifteen minutes went by before she came to a stop. "The White Lotus would be mad if I just disappeared...." she said as she thought. "Buuuuut, as the avatar, I should probably also be observing the methods of law enforcement and learn how to properly investigate..." she paused briefly, a smirk crawling across her face. She had made her decision.

The room was dark, the light of day giving way to the darkness of night; only the soft breathing of Wan interrupted the silence, and with each slow, deep inhale came flickers of flame, a dim colored fire that danced on the wicks of the candles arrayed around his person. The breathing set itself in a slow, deliberate manner until the flickering fires of the candles evened with his own breathing, as those two things became a single thing, until he and the candles were synonymous and interchangeable. He fed his hopes and his dreams to these candles, tempering his own will and soul; his fears and doubts fed the fire until his mind was a void, a canvass of darkness and within that darkness were pinpricks of light, of fire, and they allowed no thought, no feeling or idea, to disturb the stillness.

It had been a long day for Wan, a man who was used to hard work and even longer days, and he knew rest would be a long time coming. Deep in his meditative state like this, he could feel the heat from the others in his house; felt them going about their own nightly routine as he did his own.

He also felt the heat of a body just outside his door.

'Coming, grandfather,' as Wan speaks, the void shatters as the words leave his lips.

Wan stands to turn the light on, opening the door to reveal a slightly stooped old man and it was easy to see a devilish glint in his eye, always looking for mischief. The old man was relatively harmless, but a better firebending teacher, Wan had yet to find. It was sad, then, that Wan surpassed his grandfather and both parents -the former had long since stopped sparring with Wan, though offers to guide him through spiritual tribulations. His mother and father, though, offered their services whenever they had time together.

Wan's father wasn't harsh and was often fair in judgement and dealings, but Wan did tend to get the short end of most sticks. Such was life.

Wan sighed, 'Look-'

The old man held a hand up, entering and closing the door behind him, getting serious, 'No, you look. However right or justified you may think you were, it was wrong. We are all doing our best here, but this idea of needing a master? You are a Shimura and we are smiths; our way of life doesn't require a master firebender. Why can you not be happy here, with us?'

At this, the anger that had been gathering like a volcano about to erupt vanished and Wan's arguments died on his lips; he pulled the old man in for a hug. 'Oh, grandpa. You know I am happy here, but I want more for myself.'

The words he said as he broke the embrace, speaking again, 'I will speak with him in the morning, with both of them, and I will listen, but my mind has been made up. Your support in this would help.'

'Perhaps you are right, son. I will give it some thought and you will have my answer in the morning, as we will have yours.'

Foolish old man, Wan thought fondly before retiring to his own bed, where sleep quickly found him.

In the morning, Wan found himself in a rather good mood despite the omens of the days outcome. He had dreams of flying, of great fires and even greater storms. Wan ate breaktfast alone, did most of his morning routine alone, as his family was probably hard at work. Wan was allowed certain freedoms, such as sleeping in and having solitude in his work.

His days were longer, but it was worth it.

As he walked outside, there was a stillness to the air he wasn't expecting but nonetheless welcomed as he breathed in his first breath of morning air; the sun bathed his body in its warmth.

'Ah, so you're awake,' came the voice of his father, who stood a few feet away. 'Your grandfather came to me early this morning. You seem to have swayed him; your mother refuses to stay out of this, insisting we are both idiots. I cannot guarantee your position should you leave. You know how lucky we were to have you.'

'How is that my fault? Should I not be allowed to make my own choices? To fail or succeed? I cannot grow here, and I feel myself stagnating by the day.'

His fathers face grew darker, anger consuming him before it left his face, replaced by resignation. 'Fine, so  be it. You may leave to seek your master and your adventures, but none will see you go. You leave in disgrace and may not return unless your quest is completed.'

And so, armed with the few possessions he did have, Wan would set out to begin his journey, hoping that just maybe he could prove his father wrong.

Capital City is the melting Pot of the Avatar Universe. People from all corners of the world settle here, making it the most diverse city there is. However, as a result, it's also an extremely Capitalistic city. There are many bending dojos in the city, however, most low income families wouldn't be able to afford sending their children to study there.

Capital City imports and exports products all over the world, making it possible for all kinds of businesses to strive here. While it may be difficult to break into any given industry, anyone who manages to do so, has the possibility of making a grand living.
